What would you do if you could retrain, with time and money no object

I would be an osteopath - having been taken from crippling pain to ok by one, I am in awe. Gods amongst men etc. That said, I did fancy being a midwife immediately post baby so maybe I am just suggestible.

I'd love to be an artist and have a little studio at the end of a cottage garden.... except I'm not artistic in the slightest so it's not a possibility.
I'd also love a little shop in a village centre that just sells pretty things and I'd live in a flat above it... still not realistic though.

Most realistic career plan - I'd like to work with young people aged 16-25, most likely autistic/send and who can live independently but just need support such as meal planning, shopping, paying bills etc. A support worker really.

LoonyLunaLoo · 19/02/2020 17:06

Speech therapist or educational psychologist... basically my job but I’d earn more money and harbour more respect 😂.

FakeFraudSquad · 19/02/2020 17:10

Another Speech and Language Therapist here!

Or either a heart surgeon or a highly specialised cardiac nurse.

I’d be an archivist too! I love old documents and spend my free time doing genealogy. I looked into retraining pre-kids, but the lack of jobs put me off, and I didn’t have time to volunteer to get experience for a masters at the time. I’m a science teacher which I do enjoy, but I think I would have really loved to be an archivist!

daisybrown37 · 19/02/2020 17:25

Occupational Therapist, working with children. Been around them a bit with both my children and would retrain if I had the money to give up work and do so.

Currently HR Manager, so nothing remotely similar!

Rubywhox · 19/02/2020 17:30

I’m at OT and love it but I’d love to try teaching. I think a lot of the skills needed overlap

BertieDrapper · 19/02/2020 17:33

Ohhh possibly a carpenter... or illustrator if I was better drawing!

I've just started my own business which involves woodwork but would love to be able to do more complex stuff.

bookmum08 · 19/02/2020 17:37

A toy designer or toy restorer. Historian of toys maybe.

wineymummy · 19/02/2020 17:40

I'd be a dermatologist so I could spend all day squeezing people's blackheads and posting the videos on Sporner Corner. Also be on a fat doctor's salary without unsociable hours.
Or I'd be a florist.
Or a paediatrician or obstetrician.

WarmSausageTea · 19/02/2020 17:41

British Sign Language interpreter.

dustibooks · 19/02/2020 17:42

Horticultural research, probably - including all the exploring rainforests and discovering new plant species bits.

Too old for all that malarkey now though Grin

NothingIsWrong · 19/02/2020 17:43

currently a structural engineer, but I would love to do a textiles degree of some sort and have the courage to try a creative career.

Sadly I have children to feed, greedy little buggers...

Xyzzzzz · 19/02/2020 17:44

Psychologist

Pinkstars2501 · 19/02/2020 17:45

Forensics of some kind. Or pathologist or even mortuary technician.

I'm promise I'm not as morbid as this sounds! I just find all that kind of thing interesting.

HelloDulling · 19/02/2020 17:45

Fashion historian, I think.

TheThingWithFeathers · 19/02/2020 17:46

I'd be a translator. I am actually toying with the idea of doing a languages degree with the Open Uni for fun, but I doubt it will lead to a career change. I can dream though!

Bluerussian · 19/02/2020 17:47

I would learn how to be a part time couch potato and appreciate being lazy :-).

TheBeastInMsRooneysRoom · 19/02/2020 17:47

I decided to do the thing. I'm a qualified solicitor, and decided to become a psychologist. About twice a month I lose my shit and think I'm making a terrible financial mistake, but I couldn't not try. Similar to above posters, I just thought I was bad at science. Turns out, school science department was boring and underfunded, and I actually love science! But more than that, I love people. I needed a job that had lots and lots of people contact. I wouldn't have known that until I treated my mental health though. I always thought I didn't really like people. A great psychologist helped me realise that I was chronically overwhelmed with undiagnosed ADD, not cripplingly introverted, and it has changed my life. I won't qualify until I'm 40, but I'll hopefully reach 40 anyway. Might as well be 40 and doing my dream job!

confusedandemployed · 19/02/2020 17:49

Vet.

Milicentbystander72 · 19/02/2020 17:51

I'm an Illustrator and heading for 50. I'm successful but getting bored.

I'd love to have a go at something completely new - although I'm unsure what.

If I could pluck a career out of nowhere I'd be an inspirational Drama teacher....

Or a police detective.

FurryMuzzles · 19/02/2020 17:52

Dog behaviourist. Which actually I am qualified to do as I have a degree in canine behaviour but I also have a lucrative career in business and dependents so cannot reduce my salary.

Dogs do not pay as much as business in need of IT services. Sad

Xigris · 19/02/2020 17:53

Midwife. Currently a part time specialist nurse so it’s not impossible but with young children I just couldn’t afford the full time child care

Puppywithattitude · 19/02/2020 17:55

Doctor without a doubt.

EnormousDormouse · 19/02/2020 17:55

I'd train to be a GP or go into the Navy I think.
I have worked in aerospace engineering and am currently a primary teacher. I get bored after a while so will do something new in a few years but due to age it won't be either of the above. I looked at training to be an OT or ODP before retraining as a teacher.
