I don't watch it btw and certainly haven't seen tonight's episode but if as far as I can make out, if you're looking for kindness then don't watch bloody love island. Stick to Esther rantzen congratulating bewildered traumatised kiddies or Paul O'Grady and his fekking dogs.

I wanted to see the tribute to Caroline, I thought it was going to be a montage of her time on the show

I have seen only ten mins of one episode when I happened to turn the TV on and it was on. Couldn’t believe how vacuous it was. One poor girl was gutted someone she liked had got with someone else or something along those lines. Just don’t understand how this is entertainment.

What did they do instead? I never watch it but friends at work chat about it and Im happy to listen to shenanigans.

Ok fair enough but it wasn't billed as that. I heard it was back on and business as usual. Not sure where you'd go for your montage needs - maybe someone on YouTube has constructed something with suitably emotive music?

I believe 'reality TV' has a lot to answer for regarding our young people's mental health.

And, personally, I think anyone who watches it needs to have a think about why.

Well I & my sister think it’s just media paid prostitution. Horrible, supposed “real life” crap. Gives people a twisted view of life & how to “ deal” with it. It’s like modern day roman games except the “ animals” are the protagonists & the public get to raise our thumbs, or not, via social media. Ooo & let the Police & Judiciary join in to “make an example” of a frail woman. Disgusting & needs throwing off. They have done that you know, with “ entertainment “ which has been linked to suicide!

Yeah the whole thing needs putting in the bin afaic. Including waffly talk of "kindness". These shows are built around production companies constructing simulcrams of human experience for the general public to project on according to their own insecurities and foibles which for most of us is a never-ending list. Ally that to mob/tribal mentality with an endless need for validation as expressed on social media and you have a monster that feeds itself and they know this.

@Horsemad totally agree with you there! I watched 10 mins of Love Island and I'm still mad I wasted 10 mins on that complete bullshit! I wish they'd just cancel all these shows and put out something much better!

I enjoy it and accept it for what it is - vacuous but entertaining tv. I much prefer it to any of the scripted reality shows or fly on the wall types.

I haven’t watched any of the winter series but turned it on to see the ‘tribute’ to CF. It lasted all of 2 mins and then it took a swift gear change with an upbeat song and two people cuddling.

It was very strange. They may as well have just not bothered.

Sadly, nastiness is what people seem to want. Even if they criticise it in public, enough of them will still tune in to be offended by how nasty it all is.

By contrast, two recent programmes - First & Last and The Masked Singer - were recently discussed on here. Both shows are unashamedly silly, good-natured family entertainment with no nastiness whatsoever.

Most of the initial comments were "What's this rubbish, why do they think we want trash like this on at prime time?" Maybe if Monster had used Fox as a battering ram to knock Tree unconscious and Octopus had malkied Hedgehog into the front row of the audience instead of them just singing and giving clues, more people might have praised it for its gritty entertainment value....

What did people expect, that is what these so called reality shows are about.

Highlighting the worst elements in society, pitching people against each other to act and speak outrageously, building them up and then letting them crash.

That has been the standard of popular television for the last 10 -15 years and most of the people hand ringing and sharing be nice posts on social media have revelled in these shows for years, gossiping about who they like and dislike.

Reality shows, talent shows and all of that genre are exploiting vulnerable people and exposing them to situations they are completely unprepared for.

I'm not advocating the show but Caroline's death was not 'linked' to it. It happened to be one contract that she undertook as part of her professional life. Her death was 'linked' to a horrible incident in her personal life, her depression, anxiety, fear of the future and the vile negativity she received in the wake of her assault charges.

It is cheap, lowest common denominator TV, designed to:
a) make money for the production company
b) make 'celebs' from the desperate souls who are contestants in it- and the production company again which signs them up to PR contracts and takes a hefty cut of any earnings
c) link into social media to create hubris and noise about the actions that take place on the programme - collecting bigger audiences and whipping up interest that will promote the contestants and bring in more money
d) Get the tabloids, paparazzi and cheap magazines interested and promoting the contestants

It is all about money, money, money and it uses the horrible, mindless culture we have based on some people's brain-dead fascination with the cult of 'celebrity'. Who cares what Kerry Katona, Colleen Rooney, Rebecca Vardy and all the 'influencers' who have crawled out of the woodwork since Saturday with their memories, private photos and close friendship revelations of Caroline Flack think?

None of us knew her - although apparently some of us feel we can call her 'Caroline' which shows how involved we have become with this whole thing. It is a minor version of Diana Princess of Wales, George Michael and Amy Winehouse. People are over-reacting and wanting to be part of it and suffer it but none of us knew her. We have been conned into thinking we did.

From what I read yesterday and today- never having actually seen her on tv- she was a complex, vulnerable, fragile person who had suffered mental health issues for many years. This 'let's blame the CPS/ITV/Love Island/ the police/her management' is ridiculous. Sadly she made choices in life which were not always wise and one of them was she was determined to kill herself. It is impossible to stop someone who has made that decision. It is a tragedy in the true sense of the word.

It is time her friends stopped posting revealing photos of her, stopped commenting about her and allow the next few weeks of difficult events for her family to take place. They are whipping up social media speculation and blame and taking away what privacy she had left.

Give them bread and circuses...
