No. Going there for a holiday and living there are two totally different things. I feel like the people are still somewhat backwards, still disrespectful towards women...Men are still seen as superior etc..strict rules about clothing. I wouldnt personally

Lardlizard · 17/02/2020 15:28

Yes that’s what I’m thinking
It’s the culture is so so different, esp if your living there

I have several friends out there who moved from the UK they honestly love it and are really happy out there.

comfypantsisme · 17/02/2020 20:43

well if you like women treated like dolls and badly treated employees from India etc go ahead!
even in year 8 ds has been taught about the glamour/ glitz side of dubai and the "dark side" of it!!

LIZS · 17/02/2020 20:50

Probably not. You can happily exist in an expat bubble and ignore the less savoury aspects though.

NemophilistRebel · 17/02/2020 20:51

No

hauntedvagina · 17/02/2020 20:53

No

SisterAgathaVanHelsing · 17/02/2020 20:56

No. I wouldn't go on holiday either.

MrsNoah2020 · 17/02/2020 20:56

Absolutely not. Have visited the Middle East/Gulf states many times but would not live there, both because of being a woman and because of what happens to foreigners who end up on the wrong side of the law (which can happen to anyone).

Emmelina · 17/02/2020 20:58

No. Even for holidays we avoid places where women are still seen as second class citizens!

5zeds · 17/02/2020 21:00

even in year 8 ds has been taught about the glamour/ glitz side of dubai and the "dark side" of it!! by whom??Shock

OP yes I would but I would need it to be financially advantageous. It’s an expensive place to live and fairly unpleasant in the summer. With a good package I’d jump at it.

Cliffdonville · 17/02/2020 21:08

I lived there and hated it, the buildings are built using slave labour, and the staff that serve in hotels/shops etc are not much better treated. Women are treated like second class citizens.
It's very easy to go and get blinded by the tax free salary and glamour but if you look behind the scenes it's a truly horrible place, built on the literal blood, sweat and tears of others.

AlanRickmanFanClub · 17/02/2020 21:18

Absolutely not. If you're only interested in shopping or lying on a beach and can ignore the fact that the whole place was built using what is effectively slave labour and women are second class citizens, then go for it.

TheQueenBeyondTheWall · 17/02/2020 21:20

No I wouldn't even go on holiday there.

okiedokieme · 17/02/2020 21:38

No, wouldn't even visit because their human rights suck. Not that they would let me in because I'm not married to my dp

Lardlizard · 17/02/2020 22:50

Makes me wonder how much people know about the British empire

OP posts:
TooTrueToBeGood · 17/02/2020 22:54

No. It's a repressive, mysoginistic dung heap. I get that many people live there and have a whoop-de-do time but the same could have been said for nazi Germany.

Waterandlemonjuice · 17/02/2020 22:54

Nope

Forgetfebuary · 17/02/2020 22:57

No definitely not.
It would be like living in apartheid.
No.

Tatum1234 · 17/02/2020 22:58

No and I wouldn’t holiday there either.

coolwalking · 17/02/2020 22:59

No. I am gay. Would be suicide

coolwalking · 17/02/2020 23:00

Apologies, that was a stupid remark to make in light of recent events. I should have said that I would be targeted and potentially lose my life due to their homophobic laws

MarshaBradyo · 17/02/2020 23:01

No

5zeds · 17/02/2020 23:01

I find the whole “slave labour” applied only to UAE difficult. Do people realise that labour is provided in this way throughout the middle and Far East? As for women’s rights, I’m pretty sure that issue is also fairly widespread.

sassafras123 · 17/02/2020 23:03

No way !
