I’ve never really used my first name ,always used my middle name ,.on my wedding certificate the registrar put my middle name first as that’s what everyone calls me.
Passport office want proof of a name change from first name to middle name

Obviously I’ve not got that ,lots of people use their second name when they don’t like their first name, why would I change it officially as they are both my name.
I’m about to loose my £80 fee ,as this has been has been going backwards and forwards for some time ,
I’ve simply not got the proof they want ,
What on Earth can I do
I’m 46 always lived in uk and never had a passport before

OP you don't need a solicitor for a deed poll, just do it online. Much cheaper but make sure you go through a website that guarantee the passport office will accept it.

othervoicesotherrooms · 17/02/2020 08:01

Do you have a driving licence?

I'm wondering the same! How on earth did you get to swop names over for this? Or your bank accounts?

SouthWestmom · 17/02/2020 08:02

www.gov.uk/correct-marriage-registration

SouthernComforts · 17/02/2020 08:02

Like a pp said my dad opened a bank account with his middle name as he is known by it, then had a nightmare trying to close it years later as obviously he had no ID in that name.

I come across this a lot with HMRC too. People register with their full real name then give me whatever version they fancy and wonder why we can't get them to match up..

FrogsFrogs · 17/02/2020 08:03

Can the marriage cert be changed seeing as the registrar used the wrong names.

That's really weird and is registrar fault surely?

strawberry2017 · 17/02/2020 08:03

I'll be honest I'm surprised they did your marriage certificate for that way, I don't think they should have done.
It's a legal document that doesn't match your current legal name.
The passport office are correct to question it, you either change by deed poll or you apply again in your legal name.

MrsFezziwig · 17/02/2020 08:03

My friend has always been known by her middle name (and we are in our sixties). Her passport still states her two names in order, as on her birth certificate, and when she books holidays which require passport details she puts her two names down in order as the name on (for example) her flight tickets has to match the name on her passport. This doesn’t seem to have scarred her psychologically.

WateryFowls · 17/02/2020 08:05

Why on earth did the registrar put the wrong name down? DH has been known by his middle name from birth, never ever used his legal first name. But all his official documents, bank accounts etc are in his legal name. Unless he went the deed poll route, which he didn't want to do, he's accepted that's just the way it is.

CalleighDoodle · 17/02/2020 08:06

The marriage certificate is the problem. It is wrong. Presumably you are in fact applying for your passport with the correct way that matches the birth certificate?
go to the registry office with your birth certificate, explain the registrar filled it in wrong and see what they say.

These are official documents. How did the marriage certificate end up wrong in the first place?! Does that put into question the validity of the marriage?

Sirzy · 17/02/2020 08:06

If the marriage certificate is in the wrong name does that also create issues with the legality of the marriage? (No idea but to me it sounds iffy!)

NothingIsWrong · 17/02/2020 08:06

Yeah, my husband is the same. Has used his middle name since birth, but his passport is in his full legal name and I have to book anything official with his legal name.

ShivD · 17/02/2020 08:06

I’ve used my middle name since birth too, it can really be a faff sometimes as almost everything has to be be officially registered in a name I’ve never used.

I’m assuming that you need both the Birth Cert plus marriage cert because you use your married surname? If so, I think the best bet is to get your marriage cert altered to switch your names, this explains how www.gov.uk/correct-marriage-registration and then continue the passport application.

CalleighDoodle · 17/02/2020 08:08

@SouthernComforts similar happened with my uncle. After he died his siblings, His only relatives, had a nightmare because he had bank accounts in the wrong name and they were not able to access the money.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/02/2020 08:09

Is the issue that you want your passport to match your married name, or that you need more than one form of ID to get a passport?

If you can get your passport issued with just your pre married documentation (birth certificate, NI number, any bank accounts etc) just do that and remember to book any flights in the name that your passport has been issued in.

If the issue is that you need more than one form of ID to get a passport, they don't believe that Sarah Mary Jones and Mary Sarah Smith are the same person, and you really want your passport to match the name that you currently use, then you need to go via the deed poll route.

thegreylady · 17/02/2020 08:10

I always use my middle name and have never been known by anything else. However I always give my first name in official situations and have never had a problem. In fact I have 3 Christian names (S R V) and am called an abbreviation of V. As long as the first name on your passport matches your birth certificate it should be fine.

adaline · 17/02/2020 08:10

Why on earth did your registrar use your middle name? Surely that means it's been recorded wrongly and isn't legal? Confused

JudyCoolibar · 17/02/2020 08:10

Why can't you just get the passport issued in the name that is on your birth certificate?

QuillBill · 17/02/2020 08:11

What a mess.
I agree that you need to get your marriage certificate corrected.

PlumsGalore · 17/02/2020 08:11

Sorry, saw someone became to it.

And yes, your birth certificate is correct, your marriage certificate needs putting right, and your passport needs to be in the correct birth name.

DONT FORGET to book all travel documents in your birth name forever more so they match your passport.

GaaaaarlicBread · 17/02/2020 08:13

I think you’ll have to get the register office to change your name order on your marriage certificate because , the problem is your birth certificate is correct , legally, and your marriage certificate doesn’t match so it’s obviously going to flag up in the passport office as it’s illegal to have an incorrect name obviously, so you’ll either need to change your name by deed poll or change your marriage certificate. That’s all you can do.

mynameiscalypso · 17/02/2020 08:13

Personally m, I would get the marriage certificate changed so it's correct and then, if you want, legally change your first name. At the moment, you have the audit trial of one name change (surname) but not the other. This could well become a complete nightmare in time. I also think the registrar messed up though; they never should have put you not-legal name down.

diddl · 17/02/2020 08:13

"on my wedding certificate the registrar put my middle name first as that’s what everyone calls me."

I always thought that you needed to show your birth certificate to get married?

PineappleDanish · 17/02/2020 08:13

Why on earth did your registrar use your middle name? Surely that means it's been recorded wrongly

Human error. It happens.

Farahilda · 17/02/2020 08:14

What name is your bank account in? The r jab b could ntracr, rental contract, mortgage?

Or driving licence?

Or NHS and NI record?

Or your Will?

Dates showing when you adopted the new name may well be evidenced by those documents. Adding a deed poll is technically unnecessary, but will probably be useful.

And yes, even re-ordering your birth names counts as a name change. And it is quite a PITA to have more than one 'official' name concurrently, so do change everything (or nothing) so things match.
