I’ve never really used my first name ,always used my middle name ,.on my wedding certificate the registrar put my middle name first as that’s what everyone calls me.
Passport office want proof of a name change from first name to middle name

Obviously I’ve not got that ,lots of people use their second name when they don’t like their first name, why would I change it officially as they are both my name.
I’m about to loose my £80 fee ,as this has been has been going backwards and forwards for some time ,
I’ve simply not got the proof they want ,
What on Earth can I do
I’m 46 always lived in uk and never had a passport before

Bonkers to apply for legal documents with your nickname.
Youll either have to start again or change by deedpoll.
If youd done check and send at the post office, theyd have picked this up

No solicitor needed. Do a statutory declaration.
Print template get two witnesses
Don't pay anyone online FGS!

HeronLanyon · 17/02/2020 08:41

op you can call yourself what you like for as long as you like. When it comes to official identification docs you surely understand that ‘they’ can’t issue according to your preference ! ‘We know Christmaspug is actually, legally, Pugchristmas but we’ll just follow what she would prefer. No problem she’ll be going by an incorrect name. No problem she can now assume a totally different legal identity. No problem she now has two legal Identities. No problem that we the official highest level identity documentation issuing government department just do this for her. ‘. Once you understand how nonsensical that would all be the quicker you’ll sort it out whatever way you wish. Loads of good advice here. Plus warnings about getting it officially sorted before eg wills/executors/travel become hopelessly complicated.
Good luck.

" However it will not show the married name, which presumably is the reason for submitting the marriage cert in the first place."

Well yes, but it would save Op losing her fee.

bananasplice · 17/02/2020 08:42

I would be more concerned about confirming that the marriage is legal,
Imagine in 10 years you get divorced and it turns out it wasn't valid !!!

Christmaspug · 17/02/2020 08:44

I think some confusion has come due to as a child when my mum remarried I had to take on her husband’s name as we moved to his house ,so I have education certificates in that name
Then that all broke down ,and I went to live back with my dad ,and had to take his surname ,so more certificates in that name ,but then I had to leave and living back with my mum ,had to retake her husband’s name again
I don’t mean that to be a drip feed
But my name has stayed the same for over 20 years will bills and bank statements and marriage certificates
I can see I’m going to end up at the solicitors trying to unscramble this 😥

I think it makes far more sense to change your marriage cert as that is incorrect, rather than start all over with a deed poll.

I cannot understand why you thought it was fine to reverse your names for your marriage cert and not appreciate it would have legal implications!!!

Yes, I appreciate deed poll covers first and last names, but in reality people use deed poll usually to change their surnames - ie from a married name to a maiden name, post divorce- or to create a new identity.

But you simply want to change the order of your names so they all match.

You ought to look into your marriage cert cock up because as someone else said, that may be invalid.

You can call yourself whatever you want BUT you need all legal docs to have the same names in the same order.

I'd take legal advice on your marriage certificate as that's where the error is.

PineappleDanish · 17/02/2020 08:46

Education certificates are irrelevant though. Your birth certificate name is your legal name. Full stop.

Sirzy · 17/02/2020 08:46

So basically you have spent most of your life using names far removed from the legal one yet your surprised that the legal documents are now posing an issue?

Looks like you need to get the marriage certificate sorted and then start from there

DinosApple · 17/02/2020 08:46

Really you do need your legal name to either be changed or corrected. This will throw up all sorts of problems for your next of kin or children after your death.

In your case I would have got the marriage certificate corrected. But if your bank account is not in your legal name either but the same as your marriage certificate (?) then maybe you could do a back dated deedpoll?

Chista · 17/02/2020 08:46

You can't have different legal documents with different names, this is why your passport/driving licence and other government issued ID needs to have your legal name which they will take from your birth certificate, if youd name has changed then a deed poll document needs to be supplied. You have not legally changed your name, it is the marriage certificate that is incorrect. You need to contact the registrar to advise them that the certificate is incorrect - the change may cost you £90. If you go the deed poll name change route - be mindful your other government issued IDs will need to be changed as will banks etc. Think logically here, it would be easy for criminals to get away with all sorts if we could just get passports etc because we wanted to use another name than that which is recorded legally

For advice re marriage certificate

JinglingHellsBells · 17/02/2020 08:48

what? This is a complete dog's breakfast!

You only take a step parents name if they officially adopt you.
You should never have taken your Mum's 2nd husband's name unless he officially adopted you. Did he? And even then you didn't have to take his name.

And in any case that's all irrelevant.

You messed up by giving the registrar the wrong name. It should have been the order on your birth certificate regardless of what you chose to be called.

recordbox · 17/02/2020 08:49

The surname and education certificates are really a red herring here. They have no bearing on what is happening now.

Christmaspug · 17/02/2020 08:49

I didn’t get my marriage certificate changed ,as it’s in the same name order of my bills and bank accounts.
My morgage is in the same name as my marriage certificate too

On the sacredness of passports names...

My husband's passport spells his surname slightly wrong (and differently from his birth certificate, driver's licence, marriage certificate, etc) because apparently someone at the Passport Office couldn't read. All subsequent passports have also been issued with the mistake.

My passport OTOH bears his/our real surname correctly spelt. It caused us a visa problem once!

Christmaspug · 17/02/2020 08:50

At 14 I didn’t get a choice at what surname I had ,parents like mine ,you did as u were told

CrotchetyQuaver · 17/02/2020 08:50

Sounds like it's back to the registry office. They made the mistake, years ago it probably didn't matter but now it does. I had something similar, I was married for nearly 25 years before I put all my official things in my married name a couple of years ago, they're much stricter on paperwork these days

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 17/02/2020 08:50

My aunt is known by her middle name and always has been; however, her passport and all other ID documents show her first name first, if you see what I mean! It doesn't really matter - it's not as if you flash your passport around for people to have a look at, is it?

And there you were making out the registrar made a mistake but all along you have used your middle name for everything!

MaggieFS · 17/02/2020 08:51

The only documents which matter are your birth certificate, and if you want your passport in your married name, your marriage certificate. Don't be distracted by surnames on education certificates.

KittyMcKitty · 17/02/2020 08:51

OP I genuinely think you should have a chat with a solicitor before doing anything- this is all such a mess / muddle you need correct advice before moving forward.

Christmaspug · 17/02/2020 08:51

I think deep down I always knew this would be awful to sort out ,it’s partly why I’ve never applied for a passport before
