I’ve never really used my first name ,always used my middle name ,.on my wedding certificate the registrar put my middle name first as that’s what everyone calls me.
Passport office want proof of a name change from first name to middle name

Obviously I’ve not got that ,lots of people use their second name when they don’t like their first name, why would I change it officially as they are both my name.
I’m about to loose my £80 fee ,as this has been has been going backwards and forwards for some time ,
I’ve simply not got the proof they want ,
What on Earth can I do
I’m 46 always lived in uk and never had a passport before

All names are made up

Yes, OP, just tell the passport office this and they'll have to give you a passport.

Lojoh · 19/02/2020 16:28

Erm, no? I'm just helpfully linking you to the government's own resources.

Sure, the wedding is invalid. Call 101 and log it.

LonginesPrime · 19/02/2020 17:21

Lojoh, your last link was to a private law firm.

Anyway, AFAIK, OP hasn't come back to say what shows up in the marriage register itself - if it's only the certificate that's wrong, she could probably use a copy of the register entry instead.

There is no such thing as a legal name.

Bluntness
With respect, you are changing the goalposts.
You challenged me on how a couple legally marry in England and Wales, you pretty much accused me of lying by saying you didn’t believe it was my job.
And when I prove exactly what I was saying you tell me that is not the point!!!
The names are as they would have been on the paperwork. As others have said, years ago there may not have been such emphasis on ensuring that the names were exactly as written. But, the OP would have been asked her names and she would have checked the paperwork etc. And then signed to say it was correct.
The OP has not exactly been forthcoming with detail though so hard to establish. One thing though, as registrars we ask people to check and point out errors. If OP thought that having her names transversed would be a problem it is unlikely they would have been recorded in that order. She was obviously happy. It does not invalidate her marriage!!
Indeed, years ago, when getting formal documents wasn’t such a rigorous process it may not have mattered it may not have been a problem. Had the OP applied for a pp then it may have been fine.

theunknownknown · 19/02/2020 19:15

It’s not a fake name though is it. It’s the OP’s name. Just said the other way around. Just like princess Diana and Charles.
Good luck trying to prove in court it’s not a valid marriage. And who would want to prove that anyway.

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/02/2020 20:17

Nothing like that at all.

If the name on your birth certificate is Ann Barbara it’s Ann Barbara. Putting the names the other way round make it a different name.

theunknownknown · 19/02/2020 20:47

ok, whatever.
OP you need to decide whether you want to pursue your current application with HMPO for a passport in your married name which you can't prove you have been using for x years.
Or you submit an application to have your marriage record corrected. You can download the form on gov.uk.
It costs £90 to consider the application and you will need to provide evidence of the correct name in use - dated from around the time of the marriage - along with an explanation of how the error occurred.
If it is agreed that a correction can be done an authority will be issued and you will, normally, attend the register office to witness the correction being made (with your husband). This will be done by adding a note to the entry. You can then order a new marriage certificate (£11) with the correcting note added to it and bob's your uncle you can then apply for a pp in your married name which will then match your birth cert (with the marriage cert providing the basis to change your surname).
The problem with this process is that, my understanding anyway, you were using your names the opposite away around, so not sure how you are going to 'prove' you were using your correct name at around the time the marriage. Unless the General Register Office will accept your birth certificate as evidence - no guarantee they will as not dated around the time of the marriage. But if you still have bank statements, payslips etc in your formal name then this may satisfy them.

I’ve always been a nickname of my middle name, used my mother’s maiden name hyphenated onto the birth certificate surname, now have a different surname entirely, and on marriage certificate, my step father was listed as my father.

Loooool, can’t wait to apply for a passport in a different country this month. 😂
Parents- stop giving your kids names so shit that they’ll choose to use their middle names. Abolish middle names and just choose a decent name for your kid, to save yourself having to listen to stories like this in twenty years time 😆

diddl · 20/02/2020 08:33

" You can use any name you like so long as there is no intent to deceive."

Yes, but Op is trying to get an official document and has sent in papers with two different names on!

Oh that's good OP!

fallfallfall · 23/02/2020 20:09

So what did you do to set the records straight?

carlyclock · 23/02/2020 20:36

That's great to hear. They must have posted it Tuesday, what did you say to them?

DrCoconut · 23/02/2020 21:01

I had a deed poll done for me as a child and subsequently the paperwork got lost. Luckily I had a passport issued before the papers went missing so I could get a new one as a renewal but when I started my job DBS wanted all documentation and it was very challenging.

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 23/02/2020 23:23

Great update! So did they accept your preferred name based on the bank statements or did you need to get a new marriage certificate?

FlamingoAndJohn · 23/02/2020 23:26

Good news!

What name did it have on it though?

Ellmau · 24/02/2020 19:49

Brilliant! Enjoy your holiday!
