I don't know if anyone else has made one!
BA2665 has missed LGW and is circling again

Just guessing on the basis it flew round and round. No idea about passengers.

notimagain · 27/02/2020 12:03

No reason that I can see for it going so far north just to dump fuel if the intention was to return to EMA..and it doesn’t make any sense from a training point of view....Looking at where it held (circled)and the orientation of the holding I can only make a very vague guess that perhaps it was a northern lights “sightseeing” flight, but I wouldn’t bet my house on it.

notimagain · 27/02/2020 12:33

No idea if there was actually was such a flight scheduled for the 26th but I’m more willing to one scheduled last night but it fits:

My phone was pinging with 7700 alerts. Weird - all are EasyJet’s and all headed for Gatwick. Two diverting to Stansted. I’m guessing they’re maybe fuel emergencies and there are major delays at Gatwick? There’s been a lot of stacking going on.

Answering my own question Grin Apparently Gatwick had to halt operations, possible runway damage/debris.

birdling · 05/03/2020 16:44

Ah yes, I noticed that as well, wondered what was going onGrin

crustycrab · 07/03/2020 20:16

PR127 JFK-Manila

What's with the long way round route? Is that normal?

Haworthia · 07/03/2020 20:58

I’ve just looked that up - isn’t it something to do with the earth being spherical?

notimagain · 08/03/2020 14:36

Yep...flat (2D) maps are highly misleading when it comes to visualising where the route giving the shortest distances between two points on the globe actually lies. If you tried stretching a rubber band over a globe, joining New York and Manila, you would find the band would tend to sit a long way north at it’s mid-point as per the Flight radar track.

You’ll see similar if you look at flights between Japan and Europe - they will almost always route way north, quite possibly over the Arctic Ocean.

Other issues can sometimes come into play such as best winds, cheapest navigation charges, overflight rights.

notimagain · 08/03/2020 14:48

Sorry, I’ve been unfair on chart and map makers..what I would have said if I could have edited my post is that some maps can be highly misleading...You can get charts drawn in a way that will depict the poles and polar” routes correctly, but they are not as commonly seen as the school room wall Mercator projection.

peekaboob · 13/03/2020 07:44

What's with all the blue planes?

Flight Radar 24 pt 2
notimagain · 14/03/2020 02:20

It might just be worth fleshing that reply out for the non technically minded:

ADS -B: "Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast", a system that automatically transmits data containing information such as an aircraft position to Air Traffic Control..

Flight Radar traditionally collected data from amateur radio receivers eavesdropping on those ADS signals to produce the symbols on it's map.

That meant it had gaps in it's coverage where there were no receivers (e.g; over the oceans and deserts) so flights their wouldn't show on flight radar, or the best flight radar could do was draw a predicted track until the aircraft came back into coverage.

According to the article Flight radar now has access to the ADS data sent via the satellite datalink system many (but not all) aircraft now use to link with Air traffic control when over remote areas.

Those aircraft are depicted in blue.

Friend stuck at East Midlands hoping to go to tenerife at 9.25 Flight not given a takeoff time but they were told to go to lounge.
Checked another flight manchester to tenerife seems to be similar delays
Can anyone check what's going on?
Flights near airport appear to be landing but who knows.

chillichutneysarnie · 14/03/2020 09:48

If it's Jet2 I don't think your friend will be going anywhere, their flights to Spain and Canaries all turned around mid air this morning but with no explanation yet. Only Jet2 though.

Fatnorthernwoman · 14/03/2020 09:55

Thanks they will sit and wait nothing else for it. Not sure what airline they are on

thenightsky · 14/03/2020 09:58

Ryanair London to Barcelona seems to be heading there ok. Perhaps its just a Jet2 issue.

Fatnorthernwoman · 14/03/2020 10:04

Hope jet2 aren't another airline that is going to the wall.
Received info that jet2 flights are returning to UK that have already set off on manchester evening news website

Mlou32 · 14/03/2020 10:13

Tracking flights isn't really my thing, so I wouldn't know, but for those of you who do - can you notice much of a difference in the amount of flights in the air at the moment with the whole coronavirus thing?

notimagain · 14/03/2020 10:14

Here's a link to the website referenced above:

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/jet2-flights-spain-turned-round-17924343

KenAdams · 14/03/2020 10:26

Wow - Jet2 usually only cancel when they really have to. They don't usually lead the cancellations.

notimagain · 14/03/2020 10:28

can you notice much of a difference in the amount of flights in the air at the moment with the whole coronavirus thing?

I don't think you can see much obvious difference yet (certainly at a quick glance) except perhaps if you zoomed in on Italy - and even then there would still be overflights showing on the map..

I suspect however it will literally be a whole different picture next week, most especially over the Atlantic as that traffic thins out...

notimagain · 14/03/2020 10:34

Jet 2 Statement (now on the Manchester Evening News Website):

*In response to local measures introduced throughout Spain to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including the closure of bars, restaurants, shops and activities including any water sports, we have taken the decision to cancel all flights to Mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands with immediate effect. We know these local measures will have a significant impact on our customers’ holidays, which is why we have taken this decision.

We are contacting our customers who are currently in these destinations, and who are due to travel, to advise them of their options, so we urge customers not to call us.

This is a fast-moving and complex situation and we are reviewing our programme as a matter of urgency, so that we can fly customers back to the UK.

The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority, and we would like to thank our customers for their understanding.*

Postspecific · 14/03/2020 10:46

Does anyone else filter for high altitude/ low speed?

Ohdeariedear · 14/03/2020 12:34

But there are still loads on Jet2 enroute to Spain and landing - no sign of any turning back?
