Vegan cake

Seriously these things need a warning label.

I just ordered a gorgeous looking coconut cake in a cafe, bit into it and it’s the most sickly, stodgy, dry piece of crap I’ve ever eaten. Told the waiter and he said ‘yeah it’s vegan’. Not labelled though!

Do places no bother labelling vegan things anymore? Not everyone wants to eat fake shite.

Has anyone ever actually eaten a nice vegan cake? I’ve eaten so many out of politeness but honestly they are foul.

Bring back eggs & butter and nice food 😋

Bad cake is bad cake, whether it’s vegan or not. I have made and eaten countless delicious vegan cakes. Equally I’ve made and eaten many dry/tasteless/stodgy cakes made with dairy and eggs. Don’t bash veganism because you were the victim of a bad baker!

ThePolishWombat · 15/02/2020 15:16

Shit cake is shit cake.

I have kids with multiple food allergies including milk and eggs - I’ve made a ton of vegan cakes that are just as nice, and other guests at birthday parties etc weren’t even aware the cake was vegan until I told them after they’d eaten it

CommunistLegoBloc · 15/02/2020 15:17

I'm not vegan but I made one of the nicest cakes I've ever baked the other day, and it was vegan. I bake a lot and I was really impressed with the recipe.

Vegan cakes can be just as lovely, this one just sounds like a bad piece of cake

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 15:57

But I’ve had so many vegan cakes, even made them myself and I’m a great baker. Sorry they aren’t as nice. Usually sickly sweet with a horrible texture.

Anyone got a nice recipe for me to try that doesn’t have Marge, fake egg powder, or chickpea juice?

Or litres of oil 🤮

These cupcakes always turn out well for me www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/vegan_chocolate_cupcakes_83393
They do contain margarine but I always get Naturli - high quality and tastes the most buttery. Let me know what you think!

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 16:24

@mce135TB thank you, I will give them a go. My friends a vegan so hopefully I can make something nice for her 😊

veggiedesserts.com/best-vegan-chocolate-cake/

Scroll down to the end of this really annoying website to find the recipe. My vegan DH made this, and it is amazing. I am not vegan but thought it was delicious. It does contain vegan margarine/ butter, but, as PP says, use Naturli and it tastes like real butter. No fake egg powder, chickpea juice or oil.

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 17:48

I’ll try it but I have tasted Naturali and it tastes fuck all like real butter! But I’m open to trying the recipe thanks 😊

I just had a pice of toast with Naturli and Marmite.

You need the Marmite to drown out the rank taste of the Naturli.

Reallybadidea · 15/02/2020 17:54

I made this cake www.noracooks.com/vegan-chocolate-cake/ with the icing from this cake www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/vegan-chocolate-cake

It is genuinely one of the nicest chocolate cakes I've ever eaten. I used Flora buttery in the icing, I've never tried it on toast, but it worked great in this.

I do the Macmillan 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning' every year and this year's 'guest' cake was this one:

I was very pleasantly surprised, it's lovely!

MyCatHatesEverybody · 15/02/2020 18:01

I love dairy products and people say I'm a great baker but this Nigella vegan chocolate cake beats regular recipes hands down imo:

Nowt like gluten and butter

HarrietSchulenberg · 15/02/2020 18:03

I made this for a vegan friend's birthday once. We didn't tell anyone it was vegan for fear of the inevitable avoidance but it was hoovered up by all and 3 non-vegans asked for the recipe.

I’ve actually gone and reactivated my account just to comment on this 😂 I feel very strongly about cake!

Ignore the vegan part, if it’s shit, it’s just shit.

I used this recipe for my friends wedding cake, and I swear to you, all 100 servings disappeared within 30 minutes. It’s £1.50 to buy the recipe, but it’s worth it. I promise.

These brownies are also epic with a bit of bow off spread dolloped in the batter before cooking but don’t overcook them:

*biscoff spread

ThePolishWombat · 15/02/2020 18:59

Stork baking block is “accidentally vegan” - always has been.
I use Orgran egg replacer with slightly less water than it says on the packet and an extra bit of baking powder to give a good rise.
I’ve never had any complaints.

randomsabreuse · 15/02/2020 19:16

Banana Bread works well vegan

Southwest12 · 15/02/2020 19:25

There's a cake shop near me that does the most amazing vegan cakes, you'd never guess they were vegan. I got a piece of raspberry and orange drizzle cake today that's both vegan and gluten free, and a vegan biscoff Tiffin bar.

underneaththeash · 15/02/2020 19:33

Drives me mad as well....I really don't want to eat chemically rubbish. I don't eat much cake, but it's quiche that has thrown me a couple of times - really nasty pastry and when I've complained they've said "oh yes, it's gluten free/egg free.

I'm really not into processed food at all and don't want to unknowingly consume it.

NamiSwan · 15/02/2020 19:36

Lemon cake works very well as vegan, as the acid in the lemon causes the cake to rise. Nigella has a lovely lemon vegan cake recipe. Very soft, not too sweet, a nice rise (not dense and stodgy). You wouldn't know it was vegan at all. Her recipe has a coconut cream topping and blueberry compote but I've never bothered to make it and just had the lemon cake by itself.

RebornFlame · 15/02/2020 19:39

Vegan muffins work beautifully as you use veg oil which keeps it moist. Chunks of ALDI vegan chocolate and cherrys. Mmmm
Also Oatly barista is your friend if milk js needed.

FET2020 · 15/02/2020 20:16

Stork is the devil sorry but it’s nasty stuff. I think I just don’t like the replacements. They aren’t nice ingredients
