Am I misremembering croissants?

They used to be rounder didn’t they? I’m sure their little feet used to come round to meet in the middle if you get me, but now they’re all so straight.

Did I dream it or have they changed?

Yes, there are 2 shapes . The not-round ones are now more en vogue here

Wonder if it is the same in France?

AdaColeman · 15/02/2020 08:12

Yes, they did used to be properly crescent shaped!

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 15/02/2020 08:12

I looked it up

In France straight ones denote they are made with 100 percent butter, it is to distinguish them from curved ones containing Marge.

In 2016 Tesco said their shoppers were unable to deal with curved ones, so the started only making straight ones. To much derision of the French! Other supermarkets followed suit

This way, Brits can eat a croissant with jam/butter/whatever in it, like a sandwich. Again, much to derision of the French as that is NOT how you eat a croissant Grin

thecatfromjapan · 15/02/2020 08:14

Go on - what's the correct French way to eat a croissant?

Hoohaahoo · 15/02/2020 08:15

Crescent is the word I was looking for. Ignore my bit about the legs Blush

I think you take a bite/pull a piece off, and just add some butter or ham to the bite

I remember a bit of jam and butter on my plate NEXT to the croissant, I think. Can that be right?

TweetUsOnFacebook · 15/02/2020 08:17

Lovely with lots of butter and marmite

KnittingSister · 15/02/2020 08:18

With apricot jam, I believe. Definitely not butter (because they're made with butter) but I reckon you put on there what you like. I like dulce de leche Grin

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 15/02/2020 08:18

Et voila:

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 15/02/2020 08:19

Not ham, jam JAM!

EmmiJay · 15/02/2020 08:29

Oh no😔 now I want oven warmed croissants and pineapple jam...

ShivD · 15/02/2020 08:33

Pineapple jam 🤯 tell me more!!

PurplePonderer · 15/02/2020 08:35

This is this kind of nice whimsical thread I look for on a Saturday morning Smile And yes, now I urgently need a croissant with apricot jam. Any shape will do.

BornInAThunderstorm · 15/02/2020 08:39

@TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead Jam AND cheese?! WTF

CuckooCuckooClock · 15/02/2020 08:40

Sainsbury’s still do curved ones I think

ACupOfCoffee · 15/02/2020 08:40

My autistic daughter will only eat round (crescent) croissants, which is becoming a pain as they are becoming increasingly difficult to find in supermarkets. Until very recently, my local Morrisons sold the cheaper crescent ones, with the straight croissants being the more expensive, premium ones. But now both the ordinary and luxury are straight. I looked in a huge Tesco Extra for round croissants yesterday, with no luck. I'm relying on Sainsbury's to continue selling them.

LangittleClegabbage · 15/02/2020 08:41

Definitely not butter (because they're made with butter)

Since when can you have too much butter? The more, the merrier I say, when it comes to warm, baked pastry products Grin

petitepeach · 15/02/2020 08:42

Also always buy the made with butter ones....far superior!

feesh · 15/02/2020 08:43

Ohhhhhh, does the name mean “crescent” then?

funmummy48 · 15/02/2020 08:43

I am eating a straight croissant with apricot jam at this very moment. It is all warm and delicious.

ArnoldBee · 15/02/2020 08:43

Aldi crescent ones are cheaper than the straight ones.

WoollyFoolly · 15/02/2020 08:44

aCupofcoffee if you get the dough-in-a-can croissants you can shape them yourself before baking. They are in the fridge in supermarkets along with the pre-made pastry/cookie dough type things

ThanosSavedMe · 15/02/2020 08:46

I hate you all. I now want a croissant!

BaronessBomburst · 15/02/2020 08:47

@ACupOfCoffee can you buy croissant dough and make your own? Try looking in the chilled foods section with the ready-made pastry.

Topseyt · 15/02/2020 08:49

I just had two for breakfast. I had to drop DD off to work an early shift at Tesco and had to be there by 7am, so I reckoned I had earned a treat for doing that.

I slice them open, butter them and then warm them in the microwave for 20 - 30 seconds. They were yummy scrummy, though I don't doubt that the French would be disgusted with me for that.

I have my morning coffee with them. Now, do I want/need another one, or would that be too much of a good thing?
