Am I misremembering croissants?

They used to be rounder didn’t they? I’m sure their little feet used to come round to meet in the middle if you get me, but now they’re all so straight.

Did I dream it or have they changed?

How do you pronounce croissant?

Crass on?

Cra sonnt?

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/02/2020 08:51

This way, Brits can eat a croissant with jam/butter/whatever in it, like a sandwich. Again, much to derision of the French as that is NOT how you eat a croissant

I am British but that is not how I eat a croissant. I put the butter/jam on my plate, pull a bit off and put the butter/jam on the bit.
That is also the correct way to eat bread rolls served with a meal.

drspouse · 15/02/2020 08:51

@ACupOfCoffee if you buy the bake at home ones you can re-crescent them before baking. Look for ones where you defrost overnight before baking. Or Jusrol in the can.

ASureSign · 15/02/2020 08:51

🥐🥐🥐
I used to love Mark and Spencer croissants about 30 years ago. The layers were peelable and they were really buttery.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 15/02/2020 08:52

More importantly, how do you pronounce it? The slightly pretentious-sounding ‘cwa-son’, or ‘crassont’? Or do you mumble something in between and hope no-one notices?

rudeymcrudeface · 15/02/2020 08:52

@cuckoocuckooclock, Sainsbury's definitely still do round ones as we bought some last week. Everywhere else seems to do straight ones.

Im not fussed either way as long as they are split before putting in the oven so I don't burn my fingers adding lashings of butter to them.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/02/2020 08:52

How do you pronounce croissant?

Kwason. But then I say nougat - noogar

Goawayquickly · 15/02/2020 08:53

I’m in bed eating croissants right now, so good.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/02/2020 08:53

In bed? How can you avoid the crumbs?

Kescilly17 · 15/02/2020 08:54

We have had the ones from our local co-op this morning and I was just thinking how they are positively round, ends totally joined together.

Ludways · 15/02/2020 08:57

I can't believe you all ruin them with jam, kwasont's should be savoury.

Goawayquickly · 15/02/2020 08:58

In bed? How can you avoid the crumbs?

Big plate more or less under my chin plus it’s bed linen changing day so I’m not too bothered about a stray crumb or two.

MaggieFS · 15/02/2020 09:04

I thought the way to east a croissant was to dunk it in a bowl sized and shaped mug of hot chocolate!

MaggieFS · 15/02/2020 09:04

Eat not east!

AngusThermopyle · 15/02/2020 09:07

Sainsbury's still do the round ones, they're the cheaper version, the straight ones are the more buttery expensive ones.

Am I misremembering croissants?
PigletJohn · 15/02/2020 09:08

The frozen or chilled ones are not as good.

In my small town the instore baked ones are best at Lidl.

Then indie bakery

Aldi not bad

Tesco much worse.

Wallywobbles · 15/02/2020 09:09

Video is worrying. I've never seen anyone ever put grated cheese on their jam in France much less on a fucking croissant

Nubbled · 15/02/2020 09:19

The French dunk them in their coffee 😳

thecatfromjapan · 15/02/2020 09:23

I dunk them in coffee. It's nice.

And tearing off bits & putting jam/butter on each piece means you can fit more butter/jam on.

thecatfromjapan · 15/02/2020 09:24

There's a bit in Joyce's 'The Dubliners' where he describes pouring tea on his cake.

It's not that weird.

RunSkipJump · 15/02/2020 09:25

In France straight ones denote they are made with 100 percent butter, it is to distinguish them from curved ones containing Marge.
I'm surprised the French would use marge - I thought it'd be butter all the way.

ACupOfCoffee · 15/02/2020 09:25

@WoollyFoolly @BaronessBomburst
@drspouse Thank you all for the tip about bake at home/jus roll croissants. I will investigate!

missyB1 · 15/02/2020 09:30

I love the straight 100% butter ones. I eat them plain just tearing bits off, must be accompanied by an excellent coffee.

Zaphodsotherhead · 15/02/2020 09:30

And I'd been doing so well! You buggers....

dellacucina · 15/02/2020 09:30

Thank you! This has inspired me to eat the precious (no longer produced) last gluten free croissant from my freezer. Can't wait.
