Am I misremembering croissants?

They used to be rounder didn’t they? I’m sure their little feet used to come round to meet in the middle if you get me, but now they’re all so straight.

Did I dream it or have they changed?

This is a dangerous thread. I haven’t eaten croissants for years owing to their cholesterol content. Now I can’t wait to get some which I will do this morning. It’s the downward road to a heart attack. Also won’t care about the shape. Oh! Think of that butter. I am finished.

Lojoh · 15/02/2020 10:35

They did used to be crescents! We used to eat day old ones dipped in Banania when I was a child. And then we'd be sent to the boulangerie to get the morning ones for the adults. Injustice! But also Banania.

Never had a decent croissant in the USA, but weirdly the cretzels are often good, though they are probably cultural vandalism etc.

Lojoh · 15/02/2020 10:39

Oh I take it back, I did have a decent one at Cafe Boulud on 76th this year. So, ONE decent croissant. Grin

Abraid2 · 15/02/2020 10:40

I believe the different shapes used to correlate with the fat used in the croissant.

Apileofballyhoo · 15/02/2020 10:45

Lojoh what is Banania and what are cretzels?

Corneysjazzband · 15/02/2020 10:47

Preheat oven. (Ours is prehistoric and needs a good half hours notice that you actually want something hot. I gather new ovens might not need that.)
Cut croissant in half (shape does not matter).
Insert pieces of dark chocolate orange. Or milk chocolate if you really have to.
Heat.
Eat.
Must be healthy with the orange in.

Crockof · 15/02/2020 10:49

I think that must count as one of your five a day

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/02/2020 10:51

Best ones are Costco - huge , flakey on the outside , tear in the middle
Then Waitrose in the black card packaging

I bought some years ago in France that were distinctly naff ( must've been the margarine supermarket ones)

What about the Greggs CrossNut ? The bastard offspring of the Croissant/Donought ?
Tried it once (couldn't even finish it between DD and me) Way too sweet .

Deadringer · 15/02/2020 10:54

Oooh I would murder a croissant right now! I used to eat them stuffed with tuna, I am a right sicko aren't I?Blush

dreamingbohemian · 15/02/2020 10:54

Ada has the legend right. Although food historians think the original pastry was much more dense, more like a biscuit, and it was only in the 19th century in Paris that the croissant as we know it emerged. A new kind of steam oven had been invented (which later also allowed the modern baguette to be created) and they also began making croissants with puff pastry. Et voila!

Interestingly, no one seems to know who invented the pain au chocolat.

French people usually eat croissants plain or dunked in coffee. You wouldn't use them for sandwiches, that's what baguettes are for!

Myshitisreal · 15/02/2020 10:56

Little legs 🤣🤣🤣amazing description. I love a good 🥐. I worked in bakeries and we had a bakery in the family so we ate a lot. When I worked on my own (14/15yrs old), I'd warm in the oven with cheese and ham. Now I do the same at home or just butter but definitely not jam. Husband will have then warmed with jam on the side
I always add butter 😳 I remember someone saying to me years ago 'you might as well just inject fat straight into your ass 😂 🤯'

Reginabambina · 15/02/2020 10:57

I prefer all butter croissants but I also like the crescent shape much more.

Lojoh · 15/02/2020 11:05

Apileofballyhoo Banania is a bowl of banana flavoured hot chocolate but it's got cereal in it too so it's very thick, with a terrifyingly racist character on the box, now I think about it. 80s kids ate Banania for breakfast, and grated carrot (yes! very often! why?!?) for lunch. Maybe they still do. Someone can tell us on here, I'm sure.

A cretzel is an American creation, the lovechild of a croissant and a pretzel. Salty and delicious.

EmmiJay · 15/02/2020 11:38

@ShivD Hartleys pineapple jam. You will not be disappointed!

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 11:51

I made caramelised pineapple jam with rum once. It was wonderful, but sweet. The. Again, it was jam so I can’t really complain about it.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 11:53

No, it’s not. The Swiss have been making those all the time.

They are called Laugen Gipfeli.

Lojoh · 15/02/2020 12:11

Ooooh, not cultural vandalism but cultural appropriation! Wink

It's all coming out on the croissant thread.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/02/2020 12:12

If you say cross-ont not kwason, because you think kwason sounds pretentious, how do you say pain au chocolat?

Those people say chocolate cross-ont.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 12:20

They are so good though.

ClappyFlappy · 15/02/2020 12:30

What are “round” croissants? Crescent shaped ones?

I prefer the straight ones. I like the ones out of the lidl bakery, I usually just eat them plain but sometimes might put a thin scrape of raspberry jam on them. The chocolate and hazelnut ones in lidl are nice as well.

Lazydaisydaydream · 15/02/2020 12:33

My OH is out shopping and over just sent him a text demanding he bring back croissants because of this thread Grin

bsc · 15/02/2020 12:34

We get rounded croissants from Sainsbury's, no problem, though I had an almond croissant from Waitrose for breakfast today.

In recherche du temps perdu, the Madeleine scene- doesn't he dip the Madeleine into his tea, creating the smell he remembers? (Tea the French way, without milk, of course)

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 12:36

It was tisane of linden flower, or am I making this up?

bsc · 15/02/2020 12:46

Yes, pretty sure it was a tisane... not sure about the Linden part- can you really drink Linden? I have one outside my window!

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 15/02/2020 12:49

Yes you can, it’s wonderfully aromatic, also really good for relaxation or if you have a cold.
