Where did the body shop go wrong?

I remember them in the 90s, and remember there stance of being ethical and so many things being relevant to modern society.

Reusable plastics and shopping bags as well as cruelty free cosmetics.

Why did it sell out and become an unethical mlm.

Anita Roddick sold the Bodyshop in 2006 to L'Oréal.

That probably explains why it is not like it was in the nineties.

Dieu · 11/02/2020 21:18

It's pretty expensive too.

BentNeckLady · 11/02/2020 21:19

It’s horrendously expensive which puts it out of the reach of most teenagers.

PristineCondition · 11/02/2020 21:20

Got rid of the animal soaps. I used to love them

Honeyroar · 11/02/2020 21:22

I think it’s got a lot better since L’Oréal sold it to the Brazilian company- it’s ethics are better.

CormoranStrike · 11/02/2020 21:23

When it stopped selling Dewberry

yumscrumfatbum · 11/02/2020 21:24

It's just too expensive!

Nousernameforme · 11/02/2020 21:26

Is it not coming back? Lots of people are raving about their skin care stuff. Drops of youth etc.

dustibooks · 11/02/2020 21:27

When they bring out something you really like, only to find it discontinued only a few months later. That's happened to dd and me at least a half a dozen times over the last 2-3 years.

Oh, and the prices.

And why does every single 'gift set' HAVE to include sodding body butter and one of those stupid plastic puff wash things?

CallofDoodee · 11/02/2020 21:27

It's so expensive for what it is. I occasionally pop in every now and then because I do love their body butters and things, and I never fail to be taken aback at the cost of everything!

goldenorbspider · 11/02/2020 21:29

I bought a body butter the £16 other day. More fool me didn't check the price. It's ok but just don't think it's worth the price tag.

keepingbees · 11/02/2020 21:29

Most of the unique and iconic products people remember from its 90s heyday have gone.
Nothing they have is special anymore but is priced as though it is.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 11/02/2020 21:29

The final nail in the coffin has been the mlm aspect.

Cost. I used to shop there years ago. But I’m sorry I don’t have £15 for a tub of cream.

SaintFlamingo · 11/02/2020 21:31

The mlm aspect means I will never shop there

Foxes157 · 11/02/2020 21:31

I think that's the thing the prices. I spent a lot of money in there on fuzzy peach stuff, the ice blue shampoo. Used there £2 hemp bags for school was affordable to me.

But I can't remember I last went in, it's sad how Roddick sold out

Parkandride · 11/02/2020 21:36

Everything I've bought in the last couple of years makes my skin react. I forget occasionally and go back for something recommended and then have flaking eyes for weeks

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/02/2020 21:36

I went in one recently - not been in for years. It’s so different now! No white musk or dewberry perfume (which is what I went in for) YY to the animal soaps too - I had them all! It used to feel exciting and different but now it doesn’t seem to have an identity. My dd14 thought it was a rip off!
I think also there’s such a large range of “natural” botanical type products now it’s not unique any more. You can get similar stuff cheaper in Superdrug!

SaintFlamingo · 11/02/2020 21:36

Also, as a 9 year old child. I remember being bollocked for using an ink fingerprint for some cause, but having nowhere to wipe it, so doing extra, in good faith

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 11/02/2020 21:37

Oh I forgot the ice blue shampoo, I loved that!!!

letmebefrank · 11/02/2020 21:38

Too expensive. And now people are pushing it from their homes. Downward spiral.

Maranello4 · 11/02/2020 21:39

It’s expensive and I think tastes have moved on. For that price I’d rather buy another brand eg REN, Aveda which smell more like a spa and less like a pungent banana milkshake. That and the MLM part is the reason I won’t buy anything from them.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/02/2020 21:39

Ahh the smell of animal soaps in a party bag! Went in recently- everything is so expensive.

LadyLovelyLockz · 11/02/2020 21:41

Too expensive. As a teenager, it was special when I saved my money. Now I think it is too expensive for me and I have a full time job! Also it's just bloody body butters which are so highly scented and crap. Everything is so scented. And they discontinue things. They always have a bloody sale on, but exclude anything I would actually want to buy. Hmph.
