I’d love to live at the seaside

I live in a shabby (and not in a chic way) seaside town, that has an unflattering nickname based on the number of retirees who come to spend their twilight years here.

The beach is shingle.. but the seafront is two or three miles long and it’s rarely that busy if you avoid the part closest to the town centre.

I’ve lived here for nearly 17 years, having grown up in the Cotswolds, and I still sometimes get a holiday feeling in the pit of my stomach when biking along the cliff top, or walking along the seafront. We live about 3 minutes walk to the beach. And yes, we do go to the beach once a week or so in winter - more when the children were small. In the summer we try to swim regularly - it’s a great activity with teenagers.

We're about 20 minutes away, and go far more in winter, to walk the dog. Sometimes in summer too, but it's busier and dogs only get a part of the beach then. Does depend on the tides a bit.

I never ever go down, and am within 2 mins drive, 10 min walk of gorgeous beaches. Saying that I no longer really notice the beautiful scenery either. Did hit home one day when two people were talking and one said “ did you see the bronze whaler, when you were at the bus stop? “. This was not a discussion that happened when I worked in an ex pit mining town.

I used to work in a place that made a prison look inviting, now I step out of my office and can see the sea, mountains etc... I guess you get used to what is on your doorstep. I am no longer in the UK though.

Just waking up to the sound of the motorway rather than the gentle rolling waves or stormy sea that I would hear as a child when I woke up.
In fact my first thought when hearing a storm is due is what it would be like "on the front".

NormHonal · 07/02/2020 06:27

We're a 10-minute walk from the sea, and the answer is: not as much as we expected. Obviously it's nice on busy days that we can walk and not have to fork out for parking, if you can find parking, but we probably only go once every 2-3 weeks.

TheCoolerQueen · 07/02/2020 07:29

Every day, sometimes twice a day, to walk the dog. I find it much easier to deal with a sandy floor than a muddy one, so always the beach instead of the woods.
The beach was glorious here yesterday, my least favourite beach season is summer.

Millie2013 · 07/02/2020 08:10

I live in one of the most landlocked parts of the U.K. and miss the coast so much, but I grew up not too far from the coast and we rarely visited nearby beaches
I currently live on the edge of a beautiful country park and people tell me how lucky I am, but I rarely go in there either 🧐

waterlego · 07/02/2020 11:55

I live about 400 metres from the beach and I walk on it almost every day. I love how much the colours change through the seasons and different weather.

Whynosnowyet · 07/02/2020 12:17

Anyone live at a place with SC initials??

Heathercob · 08/02/2020 07:55

I live round the corner from the beach, but I rarely go down on foot now that my dog is sixteen, and is a bit wobbly on her legs. I ride my cob down the beach a bout three times a week though.

missfliss · 08/02/2020 08:03

I live 15 minutes walk from a beach and go whenever I can ( when not working) for a walk or a run.
It's something about the vast horizon that is therapeutic

hen10 · 08/02/2020 08:14

Yes. I have always lived on the coast and its always been part of my life. I remember sitting on the beach in winter the day contractions started with both dcs. I find it very calming. DCs sail so we don't go away in the mmer, just at the beach. I consider that we are very lucky to live in a place people will drive hours to get to for their UK summer holiday. I love knowing that it's there, even if it's a 10 min drive now rather than a short walk. I would be very sad to move away. I love the sea.

Lardlizard · 08/02/2020 08:32

Still want to move to the seaside after reading all these replies

I grew up by the sea and we would head down to the beach on a warm day and swim in the sea. Not as much as the holiday makers but several times through out the summer. As a teenager me and my friends would sit on the beach drinking beer.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 08/02/2020 08:38

When I lived in a proper seaside town as a child /teen i avoided it most of the time. Either full of tourists or I just couldn't be bothered.

I lived far away from the coast for uni and hated it and wanted my daughter to be by the sea. We now live in a coastal town with no reputation for being a seaside town (most people are surprised to find out its got a beach 😂) but with lots of pretty seaside places around and the gower not too far away and I'd say we're on the beach two or three times a week. I love it.

Lardlizard · 08/02/2020 08:42

Jason curious to where this mysterious place is ? Grin

I’m pretty sure the last time I stepped foot on the local beach, which is round the corner from my house, my youngest (age 4) hadn’t been born.

The beach is wasted on me, I grew up here so don’t appreciate it as much as those who have moved to it. Plus my local one is poorly rated so there’s always the fear that you’ll come home with cholera or a needle in to ur foot 🤢

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 08/02/2020 08:57

@Lardlizard Llanelli. Not well known for its coastline but I can't imagine living anywhere else 😍

BestIsWest · 08/02/2020 09:08

I am often to be found on Burry Port beach DontgoJasonWaterfalls

Claphands · 08/02/2020 09:14

I now live 5 minutes from the beach, which is beautiful but I’d rather live by a forest like I used to! It’s nice to have somewhere to walk the dog or go for a walk but I prefer woodland for sure.

RoLaren · 08/02/2020 09:15

@Lulubellabelle Fellow Sheffielder?

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 08/02/2020 09:17

@BestIsWest Burry Port is gorgeous 😍 we lived there for a year before moving into Llanelli itself. Hoping to get a walk on Burry Port beach in today before the storm hits 😂

Friendsofmine · 08/02/2020 09:21

To the beach all the time! All year round for walks on the promenade and pier games. I would say a couple of times a week in Winter for walks. Beach days obviously just in summer.

The town is awful though- full of estate agents and tourist postcard, fudge, rock, bucket and spade shops haha.

Rhubarbncustard4 · 08/02/2020 09:27

I grew up 5 miles from the sea and went to school a few minutes walk from the beach - I now live 2 hours inland - I used to crave being by the sea , still do 30 years later though not so much .

In my experience the sea can really get under your skin ... I particularly love it on a rotten grey winters day -

If you are considering moving to the sea though make sure it’s walking not driving distance .

PostNotInHaste · 08/02/2020 09:29

We are within fairly easy reach and previously were just round the corner. Completely wasted on us, haven’t been for ages.

The woods however are another matter and used most days - would find it hard not to have woodland close by.
