New iPhone, from 6 to what?

Miljea · 05/02/2020 19:43

I am very old (57) so not 15....

I have inherited my DB's old iPhones for a while, from a 5 which was great, to a 6, which has been fine.

However, it's dying. I don't know how old it is, possibly 4 years? But wouldn't be economic to repair.

DH (and the rest of the family) are Android fans. I have tried using one but I a) can't get on with one, and b) can't be arsed to learn a different system. I probably use 50% of my iPhone's capabilities, if that, but I don't know what I don't know... 😊

I use it to MN, FB, Twitter, WhatsApp, 3 news sites, google hangouts (family), taking photos, web browsing (practically always on WiFi!), Applepay, the odd text, and perhaps 1 phone call a week 😊.

If I could get a new iPhone 6, that's what I'd do, but I know you can't.

I don't want a phone the size of an iPad-

So what do I get?

An 8, that's the smallest. After that an XR. Avoid the plus ones at all costs, they're huge!

Wiifitmama · 05/02/2020 19:49

I could have written your post! I am hanging onto my 6 with all my might! Love it! I had the battery changed a while back in the big battery fiasco (so only cost me £25) which has given it a new lease of life. However, I think I probably only have a year left until I must replace it. Same as you, rest of the family are all android, and I am not going there. I don't want a new iPhone - I want a new iPhone 6! (stamping my feet!).

Cinderemma · 05/02/2020 19:52

iPhone 7? I got my DS one and it seems good

Wasail · 05/02/2020 19:53

DS has the 8 and it’s almost identical to the 6. I have a 7 and love it. For me it’s the size of the memory that matters due to my millions of photos.

Wiifitmama · 05/02/2020 19:54

Can you still buy the 8? Or has it been superseded by others?

Quinceandmedlarsrule · 05/02/2020 19:55

I've just gone from an SE to an 8 and it's great - a lot more storage, bigger screen which is nice, and not too much more expensive. I tend to keep mine until they die, so hoping this will last a few years.... my children tried to persuade me to go android but I just wanted something I didn't have to think too much about!

mrssunshinexxx · 05/02/2020 19:56

Get a refurbished 6 or 6 plus off music magpie

FabbyChix · 05/02/2020 21:33

An 8 is the same size but the 7 is cheaper from magpie

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 05/02/2020 21:54

Do t go for iPhone 11, it’s awful. My iPhone 8 was great, but when it was stolen, I replaced it with an 11. I regret it.

BunnyBerries · 05/02/2020 21:54

There are rumours of a new budget iPhone nicknamed the 'SE 2' coming out next month, based on the 8's tech, that is aimed at snagging users of the original iPhone SE (which was a 6 style phone) as those phones are dying now. It may become just what you are looking for!

BrandySours · 05/02/2020 22:14

I'm still clinging onto my 6s for dear life...
Like PP I don't like the massive ones and don't tend to upgrade constantly.
And I like the one I've got!
Hopefully the rumours are true about the new model Smile

TantricTwist · 05/02/2020 22:24

Ha I'm glad it's not only me hanging on to my iPhone 6. I'm really happy with it and the new battery really did give it a new lease of life for sure. I have loads of storage on it. No idea which one I'd get next. I have a Samsung as my work phone which is fine but I'm so used to iPhones so I'll only ever get those for myself.

I actually still get really frustrated with the Samsung as it just doesn't do what I want it to.

myidentitymycrisis · 05/02/2020 22:30

Following

I still have an SE but it’s dying and also I find it a bit small now I do more browsing and email on it

What shall I get ? Thinking a reconditioned something although I got current phone new 5 years e

BigPinkFlower · 05/02/2020 22:33

I have just gone from a 6 plus to an 11. I have had an iPhone since the first week they came out in the UK.

It is crap. Wont tether, volume is poor, won't sync well with car and the face id doesn't work well in the night and so can't use it as an alarm clock.

After 4 weeks I am giving it away and getting a different phone.

Miljea · 05/02/2020 22:53

Gosh, thanks all!

I got a new battery in mine, which improved it no end, but after 3 months it's dropping charge too quickly; but the bigger issue is I can only use it on speaker phone! Hardly confidential! And the selfie camera stopped working (not a big deal for a 57 year old!).

I've a similar situation. Love my SE but it's slowly dying. DD has a 6 which she loves. Don't want to spend a fortune so would go for a refurbished phone, but maybe I just need to wait for the SE2 as a PP mentioned.

januaryistoolong · 05/02/2020 23:02

Don’t bother upgrading to a 7, spend a bit extra and go for an 8 at least. I upgraded last month from a 6 to a 7 and am disappointed as it is essentially the exact same phone. Didn’t even get the new phone feeling when I took it out of the box because it just feels like the same phone! Wish I’d just bought a second hand refurbished 6 for a lot cheaper like a PP said.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/02/2020 23:04

I have exactly this problem this last month! My iPhone SE is dying but I'm a reformed Technophobe and need a newer version but Probably Pre owned Pristine Just trying to decide which now

SouthWestmom · 05/02/2020 23:15

I love my 11! Surprised to hear people don't. Went from an 8.

Like the cameras, like the face recognition like the lack of a home button

awishes · 05/02/2020 23:19

Just broken the screen of my 6s and the battery is rubbish. Is it worth repairing do you think?

BronteSisters · 05/02/2020 23:24

I went from a 6S to the 8 and loved it. After two years I could have an upgrade so my 13yo DD has my 8 and I now have an 11. I bloody love it too. It's very similar to the rest so not a huge leap in tech but I very quickly got used to the Face ID feature and no home button. For a lesser budget I would definitely recommend the iPhone 8 but if you want to splash out then go for the latest.

Sadly iPhones are notoriously bad for magically "breaking" at he same time as the latest model is released, particularly if they're about 4 models behind so I was happy to get ahead and get an 11 to give me maximum time with it.

granadagirl · 05/02/2020 23:34

I had 6s loved it but wanted a newer one
So sold it went for 8, same as
Only thing I’m not impressed with is the different on you have to have an earphone jack, they break really quickly on my 3rd one
And it’s iPhone not a cheap one

bluetongue · 05/02/2020 23:35

I’m in the same position except my phone is a 5S!

It still works fine and the screen has no cracks but the battery life is abysmal. I’m currently abroad on a solo holiday and having my phone die on me all the time is less than ideal. Think I’ll be phone shopping as soon as I get back.

Chasingsquirrels · 05/02/2020 23:39

We sold my son's 6 to CEX and got an XR from the for his birthday, would a 2nd hand 6 be an option?

blueshoes · 05/02/2020 23:39

Just bought both my dcs iphone 7s. You can get unlocked second hand iphones 7 on eBay which are essentially brand new just not in the box for £200.
