New iPhone, from 6 to what?

Miljea · 05/02/2020 19:43

I am very old (57) so not 15....

I have inherited my DB's old iPhones for a while, from a 5 which was great, to a 6, which has been fine.

However, it's dying. I don't know how old it is, possibly 4 years? But wouldn't be economic to repair.

DH (and the rest of the family) are Android fans. I have tried using one but I a) can't get on with one, and b) can't be arsed to learn a different system. I probably use 50% of my iPhone's capabilities, if that, but I don't know what I don't know... 😊

I use it to MN, FB, Twitter, WhatsApp, 3 news sites, google hangouts (family), taking photos, web browsing (practically always on WiFi!), Applepay, the odd text, and perhaps 1 phone call a week 😊.

If I could get a new iPhone 6, that's what I'd do, but I know you can't.

I don't want a phone the size of an iPad-

So what do I get?

I've got an 8 and it's fine but I might look at an X or XS.

Miljea · 06/02/2020 00:24

I rubbed my eyes in horror!

Has. No. Home. Button?

What is this new visitation of hell upon the iPhone? 😂

Grinit's fine! You just swipe up, gets easy v quickly.

AwkwardSquad · 06/02/2020 04:58

I’m in the mood for a new phone, although it’s indulgent as my SE is working fine. But I’d like a larger phone - not too large, as I’m already prone to dropping the SE, and if it’s huge I don’t think it’ll help. There are too many to choose from! Not interested in paying silly money tho.

CupoTeap · 06/02/2020 05:22

Another with an SE and been toying with the idea of a new one

wobytide · 06/02/2020 05:45

Smartfonestore.com bought all my phones and the kids over the years. Never had a duff one even with Grade B plus the warranty is now for a year . Most seem to be ex company mobiles so tend to have been looked after. Went from an SE to an X and happy but cheaper would be something like a 7 or 8 which Neil still get updates for a few years yet

AmelieTaylor · 06/02/2020 06:03

Blimey smartphone are buying & selling kids as well now! Might see what they’ve got in stock! Or maybe see what they’re offering on a deal...

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 06/02/2020 06:05

If you’re wedded to the Home button (I am) get the 8 - the big one.

I personally love the 8 more than the 11 as I have the latter for work and then8 is just (IMVHO) more user friendly, the battery lasts longer and again - for me - supports apps such as Strava and Garmin and National Rail and Journey Planner much better than the 11 which can crash with these apps.

RedRiverShore · 06/02/2020 06:08

I had a 6S and went to the 11 which I hope to keep for 4 years like my 6S and love it. Even though I had a new (£25) battery in my 6S it still was not lasting well, my 11 lasts ages.

I don't change phones very often so when I do I get the newest one.

KitKatBox · 06/02/2020 06:14

The 7 is a big step up from the SE in terms of screen, camera etc.

I have got a 6+ and an 8+ and they are both fine.

DD went from a SE to a 7 and is thrilled with it.

I also have an Android phone which seems to have good capabilities but a different operating system is a pita after decades of iPhones and if I manage to answer it or send an email it’s a good day.

JoyceTempleSavage · 06/02/2020 06:16

I had the same problem as you OP with my 6s and could only use on speaker. Went to an 8. Have had it about 2 years and its v reliable phone not too big. I didn’t like the headphone jack as mentioned above but bought a converter which was fine. Now I have earpods which I love.

bluetongue · 06/02/2020 07:56

I’m the same as you RedRiverShore and the get the newest Iphone but hang onto it. With me the battery dies before I have to worry about cracked screens or anything like that.

Just googled what year the 5S is and it’s from 2013. I hate replacing tech too much for environmental reasons (and because I’m a Luddite) but when battery life is this bad it just becomes a massive hassle.

Notthebloodygym · 06/02/2020 08:14

My iPhone 11 has been fine. Seems the same as the 6 and 8 to me, both of which I have. Mine is costing £24 a month, over 2 years.

GU24Mum · 06/02/2020 08:18

I'm marginally younger than you OP but similar vintage.............!

I had my 5S for 5 years. When I kept having to delete the very few apps I had to get the one I needed that day, I knew enough was enough. Like you, I cannot get on with Android phones at all. I went for the X and it's amazing how quickly you get used to the no home button thing. This week I've got the 5S out again as DS has lost his phone. It does look small now!

ContinuityError · 06/02/2020 08:27

bluetongue

I put a new battery in my 5S and that gave it a whole new lease of life. I like the 5S size as it easily tucks away into a pocket.

ExpletiveDelighted · 06/02/2020 08:42

I went from a 6 to an XS last year as it was smaller and lighter than an XR (I hate big phones). Got used to face id/no home button really quickly, not sure why it would stop you using it as an alarm clock, I do.

GiantKitten · 06/02/2020 10:18

I went from SE to 7 plus. I always liked that the SE is so small & neat for fitting in pockets but was finding the small screen irritating for screenshots as it showed so little. (Also my DD had gone from a 5S to a 6 and I liked the feel of it, slimmer with rounded edges.)

Swithering between 7 & 7 plus I was swayed by the portrait feature on the camera which is amazing, and by the larger screen which displays so much more. (& it does have the home button, although it’s not a real button, the click is pretend Grin - the whole phone is sealed so it’s waterproof, another bonus)

I got an unlocked amazon “renewed” one with 128GB; it’s like new & it’s been fine apart from the battery, which was 84% on arrival and after 18 months has dropped to 78%, although it still works ok.

SpoonBlender · 06/02/2020 10:34

If you want to stick to the 6 style home button, go for an 8. That'll be the last iPhone with a button, and the cameras get better 6/6s/7/8 so you may as well jump straight to that and give yourself four years with a decent one.

The X/XS/11 are quite the step up in price, have a different interface (but it takes about five minutes to adapt, honestly), and again the cameras just get better and better.

Whatever you do, don't get another 6 - they're not taking new Apple software updates (they're six years old now, and stuck on iOS12) and many apps will slowly stop working on them.

Miljea · 06/02/2020 19:51

Had a fondle of a 8 today; have decided to go for a second hand one of those. It feels just like the 6, but slimmer!

AwkwardSquad · 07/02/2020 17:40

Very nearly went for an iPhone 11 but have decided to stick to my SE for a bit longer as there’s nothing actually wrong with it, and reframed this as being environmentally friendly Grin

AmandaAppleton · 07/02/2020 17:44

Make sure the one you get has a decent battery! I think only the Apple refurbished ones have a new battery

Brexshits · 07/02/2020 17:46

I’ve recently gone from a 6 to an 8.
Not much difference to me except the photos can do the live thing which is cool and the battery lasts longer than 20 minutes!
Oh and I can make a Memoji!

happymummy12345 · 07/02/2020 17:52

I upgraded last month from an SE to an 8. I love it. It took a bit of getting used to but I love it. Plus I get a newer phone with higher storage, more data/ internet and same calls and texts allowance for £1 more than I was paying on my old contract and had no upfront cost. So was a great deal for me.

Miljea · 07/02/2020 21:47

And here it is, in my hand, right now. Second hand, donut probably has a 25 minute battery life....

OP posts:
Miljea · 07/02/2020 21:48

Already it interprets 'so it' as 'donut'...

It has a sense of humour. 😂
