Do your kids like mushrooms?

Everyday I eat dinner with the kids at school. I dread to think of the number of mushrooms that I see picked out of various dishes and thrown in the bin! They seem to pop up regularly in all sorts of dishes but even the kids with the most extensive pallets will pick them out. Is this universal?! I know a lot of people pulverise veg or at least chop them v tiny but I’m thinking about mushrooms that are still recognisable. Thinking about it, I never ate them as a kid but do now as an adult but I wouldn’t count them as favourite.
For what’s it’s worth I’ve mentioned it to the kitchen staff but they keep putting them in.

My two are 3 and 5yo. They eat them and like them if cooked, but only after a lot of training (regularly having them in the dinner and insisting they have one piece each). They used to hate them, but now cheer if I say it's mushroom risotto or soup for dinner.

I think it was a texture thing, as they'd always have them when blended/chopped fine without realising what they were eating. The flavour was never an issue. They have thankfully now decided that slices and whole mushrooms are ok too.

50/50 in our house.

BarbedBloom · 04/02/2020 21:58

No kids in my family like them but neither do I. It is the texture

Ds (6) does, but then he eats anything . Dd (8) will pick them out, hutnshe sometimes forgets that she doesn't like them, or doesn't realise that she's eaten them.

mumpymo · 04/02/2020 22:05

DD and myself love them cooked, DP is not a fan and will pick out every single bit in whatever we're having. Never tried them raw personally but my sister has and does eat them raw. I went off them for years when I was a child and I'm not sure why. Pregnant with dc2 and love garlic mushrooms just now Grin

mangomama91 · 04/02/2020 22:07

My 7 year old loves them
3 year old doesn't even want to try them

Poetryinaction · 04/02/2020 22:27

Mine do but I hate them.

RainbowMum11 · 04/02/2020 22:43

If I chop them up quite finely, yes no problem at all.
Ex BIL absolutely hated mushrooms but managed a huge dish of mushroom risotto I made one night he decided to stay for tea 🙃

Cremebrule · 04/02/2020 23:26

One child loves them and the other hates them. It’s a right pain.

whattodo2019 · 04/02/2020 23:30

No! My kids are so fussy with some foods. They won't eat/
Mushrooms
Courgettes
Cooked peppers
Butternut squash
Sweet potato
Cauliflower
Aubergine
Parsnips

No fish!

TheHagOnTheHill · 04/02/2020 23:33

DD,16 has only eaten cooked mushrooms for a year. Its the texture. She has always liked them raw but not cooked.

Titsywoo · 04/02/2020 23:33

Everyone in my family likes them. Ds has been having a pile of them cooked in butter for breakfast this week.

Itsagrandoldteam · 04/02/2020 23:35

No, my 16 year old DS doesn't like them, but I didn't like mushrooms when I was a kid, but I love them now.

BackforGood · 04/02/2020 23:36

The 23 yr old will tolerate them in a meal, but wouldn't choose them (say, on toast or as a portion of mushrooms on the side)
The 21 yr old has just begun to eat them
The 18 yr old still picks them out.

They all picked them out the ones I left whole for years, as children and teens.

I think it is the texture.

NetballHoop · 04/02/2020 23:39

2/3 of my family love mushrooms and the rest will happily eat them even if they are not loved. My DD makes a point of saying how unfussy my DCs are compared to their friends.
Personally, mushrooms with garlic and diced serrano ham is my comfort food.

stargazer2030 · 04/02/2020 23:39

I’ve never known any kids like mushrooms. Even my adult children pick them out of food like they are poison. Me & dh love them.

Queenest · 04/02/2020 23:39

No too slimy apparently. All the more for me. Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/02/2020 23:40

Yes, mine does
She eats most things, her absolute no way foods are hummous, baked beans and celery.

FlurkenSchnit · 05/02/2020 00:51

One likes them cooked & raw, one tolerates them in dishes & the other two can't stand them. I love them & try to add them to whatever I can get away with really...

DowntonCrabby · 05/02/2020 00:55

Eldest, now mid teen tolerated them. DS7 “doesn’t like them.”

Neither notice when they’re so finely chopped and cooked in spag bol/lasagne etc though. Wink

ploughingthrough · 05/02/2020 00:57

Mine are quite good eaters but they won't touch a mushroom! Shame really as bloody love them.

MonsterKidz · 05/02/2020 01:21

Both mine love them.

So do DH and I.
