Do your kids like mushrooms?

Everyday I eat dinner with the kids at school. I dread to think of the number of mushrooms that I see picked out of various dishes and thrown in the bin! They seem to pop up regularly in all sorts of dishes but even the kids with the most extensive pallets will pick them out. Is this universal?! I know a lot of people pulverise veg or at least chop them v tiny but I’m thinking about mushrooms that are still recognisable. Thinking about it, I never ate them as a kid but do now as an adult but I wouldn’t count them as favourite.
For what’s it’s worth I’ve mentioned it to the kitchen staff but they keep putting them in.

Yes both my kids ask for them on pizza etc.

GameSetMatch · 04/02/2020 21:13

Yep mine both like them 5years old and 2years old my five year old loves them, picks them out of spag Bol to eat separately.

My niece says she hates them, my dsis, her DM is the same. What my niece doesn't know that the delicious lentil Bolognese she had second helpings of last week contained finely chopped mushrooms Grin

JontyDoggle37 · 04/02/2020 21:16

DS4 loves mushrooms in anything and also happily eats them raw

kitk · 04/02/2020 21:18

My DD has always loved them and won't eat a margarita pizza without chopped mushrooms on it (I hate them!)

SushiGo · 04/02/2020 21:19

2 of mine will eat them, but only raw!

TrainspottingWelsh · 04/02/2020 21:22

One hated them, then reached the stage she'd tolerate them if they were finely sliced and mixed in, eg spag bol, and as a teen isn't particularly bothered either way. When she was a toddler she referred to them as 'sluggy bits'

The other is like me, always loved them. We both eat them raw by the handful, and add them to any dish or snack we can get away with.

Dp likes them but in the normal sense. Oddly enough the dc that shares my taste is my dsd, so it's certainly not inherited or a habit formed as a toddler. Even if I did introduce her to the pleasure that is a bowl of cheese, raw onion and raw mushrooms.

EmmiJay · 04/02/2020 21:22

Mushrooms shouldn't be eaten by anyone. Tasteless little fungi bastards.😬

ThatThereWoman · 04/02/2020 21:23

nope

PippinStar · 04/02/2020 21:24

12 month old loves them, has since he was about 8 months old. First thing he eats off the plate, and then shouts at us for ours Smile

SW16 · 04/02/2020 21:26

Yes, eaten by everyone in this house, cooked, raw sliced in salads, all fine.

firesong · 04/02/2020 21:27

Eldest has always liked them, Y4. Younger one is a toddler / preschooler and isn't as keen

homemadecommunistrussia · 04/02/2020 21:27

Obviously not they are gross. sunshine Confused

norealshepherds · 04/02/2020 21:27

Mine don’t like them

louisethedisease · 04/02/2020 21:30

Absolutely not. I love them.

Vinorosso74 · 04/02/2020 21:31

DD has liked them since she was about 6. She loves them raw but can be picky when they're cooked. On pizza yes, cooked in oil and garlic Spanish style yes, with a breakfast no.

ActualHornist · 04/02/2020 21:33

2/3 of my kids like them, one actually loves them. Especially with a fry up.

I absolutely hate them. Can just about manage them minced up and in bolognese or whatever. Husband loves them.

Pedallleur · 04/02/2020 21:35

My daughter loves chestnut mushrooms in various guises, roasted or in soup. Likes truffle oil as well but not trompette or shiitake but there is time

ShinyGiratina · 04/02/2020 21:36

Unless they're pulverised into "everything I hate sauce" the DCs despise mushrooms. They are their most enduring dislike since the start of weaning.

DH and I love them. I can understand why they're polarising with their texture though.

happycamper11 · 04/02/2020 21:38

Mine are happy to eat them cooked but they do need to be cut up quite small for dd2 or she'd probably pick them out. When small they are less noticeable when eaten and more effort to remove. DD1 will happily eat them raw

Derekina · 04/02/2020 21:38

Bloody mushrooms stinky pieces of shit, the reason kids dont like them is because they have a horrid texture

bringonyourwreckingball · 04/02/2020 21:39

Dd1 (14) loves mushrooms raw or cooked, dd2 (11) will tolerate them in things if she has to or they’re chopped up tiny but will generally fish them out and give them to her sister.

BertieBotts · 04/02/2020 21:41

I liked them as a child. I don't mind their texture at all, it's nowhere near as bad as prawns, or fat on meat.

DS1 hates them. DS2 likes them but struggles with the texture. He is still in that phase where fussy isn't a thing yet though.

WeCameToDance · 04/02/2020 21:46

Dd (20 months) loves them. If I make a meal with mushrooms in she always has the lions share of them and will throw any food that gets in the way of the mushrooms on the floor.
Ds (4) hates them but he has asd and sensory problems around food so only eats around 5 foods. I’d be frankly amazed if he even licked a mushroom.
