Supermarket stupidity ...

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2020 15:52

So to lift the mood from Brexiteers dying of Coronavirus or whatever this weeks doomsaying is about, just thought I'd leave a silent scream here about a couple of annoyances from yesterday ...

Looking for a piece (well 2 actually) or braising steak. Asked at meat counter, and was shown a tray of diced steak. Had they got any undiced. No. They'd diced it all up Hmm - and then looked put out when I walked away empty handed ...

..to the bakery counter. Where I wanted a larger unsliced loaf. None on display. Asked for one. Oh no, they'd sliced them all up and put them out. Again, customer being always right, I left empty handed there too.

(I wonder when they'll start opening tins and packers "for convenience" ?)

I decided not to name the supermarket to see if others mention it, or whether they are all like that Grin

Morrisons?

RoomR0613 · 02/02/2020 16:10

Morrisons

Surely not. Although I'd be surprised these days to see braising steak anywhere other than Morrison's or Booths so perhaps you are right.

jaffaeclipse · 02/02/2020 16:10

Morrisons gets my vote as well.

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2020 16:17

I promise I'll answer at some point Grin

Grin

Waitrose had braised beef this morning.

I was in a supermarket earlier where I witnessed a serious discussion between two middle-aged men about whether ewoks are real

Try a decent local butchers, hope there's one near you.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 02/02/2020 16:43

Do they not expect people to use these counters? I went to the fresh fish counter the other week as I needed 200g of salmon for a recipe. The woman could not have looked more baffled at my request for a specific amount of fish Hmm

DontCallMeShitley · 02/02/2020 16:47

Morrisons had packaged braising, stewing and shin yesterday, there is no counter in ours though.

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2020 16:54

There isn't.

Sorry, should have said, none of which were cut up, but there was braising steak that was cut up as well.

Being lazy I buy bread already sliced as I hate clearing up the crumbs and also loathe thick sliced bread or wonky slices which is what I get if I cut it myself. Also prefer it wrapped to avoid a degree of sneezing and handling, and Morrisons have a new design to their own brand which is thinner sliced, a pleasant change to the choice of thick (medium) or even thicker (thick).

bluenoir · 02/02/2020 16:59

I overheard a man complaining about the shape of sweet potatoes this week. In fairness they were quite rotund but I'm not sure it quite warranted his level of vitriol.

Urkiddingright · 02/02/2020 17:00

No idea why anyone wants unsliced bread tbh, why make your life more difficult than it has to be?

crustycrab · 02/02/2020 17:02

Unsliced bread? What for?

slipperywhensparticus · 02/02/2020 17:03

I can't use MY local butchers they closed the nice one (for selling short weights but at least it was good) the other one has flies all over the meat and dont use gloves 🤮

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2020 17:12

Unsliced bread? What for?

They do a lovely multiseeded loaf.

I was in a certain supermarket yesterday and the lady next to me was buying jaffa cake bars. She picked a pack of 10 and I pointed out that she could buy three packs of five for less than a pack of ten as they were on offer. She looked at me as if I was a nutter and stuck with her pack of 10.

LawnsLT · 02/02/2020 17:46

The saying best thing since sliced bread is wasted on you OP GrinWink

Formermousemat · 02/02/2020 17:52

@BigFatLiar

I find myself turning those offers down, otherwise I run the risk of eating three packs of jaffa cakes in one sitting.

ClashCityRocker · 02/02/2020 17:57

I really like Morrisons braising steak, but they usually have undiced packs. In fact Morrisons is about the only supermarket I can find lambs live in at the minute.

I am the world's worst bread slicer though, so sliced every time for me.

BigFatLiar · 02/02/2020 18:00

You didn't have to buy three packs it was a pack of five for less than half price so you could have bought a pack of five or two packs of five if you wanted ten. I just pointed out to her she could have saved money by buying multiples of the smaller packs. The packs of five were next to the pack of ten on the shelf. A pack of five for 65p a pack of ten for £2.50.

JuniperBeer · 02/02/2020 18:02

"Customer is always right"

Uh no. They're not! They are always a customer but definitely not always right!

Apolloanddaphne · 02/02/2020 18:05

I shop in Morrisons and never have a problem buying unsliced bread and pieces of meat. I have even asked the butchers on the counter to dice slices of lamb for me which are already packaged and they oblige happily.

I find M&S terrible for not having unsliced loaves. I much prefer to cut a doorstop myself.

billyt · 03/02/2020 20:54

'only supermarket I can find lambs live in at the minute.'

Isn't it a struggle getting the buggers home?Grin
