I love getting older because.....

I care less about other peoples opinions of me with every year I age.

I used to be so self conscious and almost apologetic for existing. I'd over think every decision and lie awake at night cringing at the way I spoke to someone or bumped into a person on the street or dragging up memories of something I did.

What else is there to look forward to as we age?

A dear friend and I shared a birthday, we were exactly the same age give or take a few hours.

10 years ago she went to the doctor in January feeling, in her words, "a bit crook" (she was a Kiwi). It was Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and by August, she was dead. She passed away a month before our 32nd birthdays.

Since then, I see every year I get as a gift, and one I have to enjoy twice as much, because I'm doing it for Louise, who didn't get to. Still miss you, darling girl.

Oh yes, and the giving far fewer fucks is a good one too. Smile

I love my bus pass. My mortgage is paid off, I work when it suits me and have time to follow interests that I didn't even know I had during the decades when it was just get up - work - bed - start again.
And I'm so short-sighted I barely notice my wrinkles.
Wish I had my old knees back, though!

SlowSigh · 01/02/2020 21:54

I was thinking about starting a thread along these lines recently.

I have more confidence than I ever dreamed I would. And whilst I still have my wobbles on the inside, I rock outwardly.

More financial stability.

I look at my almost adult children in awe, and think I have done an amazing job at parenting.

I have learned to say no mostly

I accept that I am not, and will never be 'perfect', and that ideal is a product of my upbringing and social media.

Money doesn't always equal happiness.

wrinkledimplelover · 01/02/2020 22:01

The sex gets better. I'd never go back to sex as a twenty year old, even if I could have my 20 year old body back!

JustaScratch · 01/02/2020 22:10

To add to the above. I actually know what I'm talking about at work, people listen to me, and I get far less stressed about pointless shit.

AgnesNaismith · 01/02/2020 22:12

I’m learning that guilt is a wasted emotion and that my opinion is always valid.

Ladycoo1 · 01/02/2020 22:23

Sex definitely gets better.
Self confidence and contentment grows more and more.

This is the most resilience & good humour I've had in my entire life.

OverByYer · 01/02/2020 22:41

Oh my goodness, agree with everything @Wearywithteens says. Perfect post.

feliciabirthgiver · 01/02/2020 22:50

Orchidflower1 · 01/02/2020 23:28

MuseumOfYou · 02/02/2020 00:44

Wearywithteens that's magnificent, thank you.

BackforGood · 02/02/2020 00:55

Car insurance is a lot cheaper Smile

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/02/2020 00:59

The older i get, the less i give a dam what people think. So what if ive put a bit of weight on, its who i am now lol

AcrossthePond55 · 02/02/2020 01:00

Beautiful, weary!

.....because I no longer have to suffer fools gladly. I can (and will) remove a person from my life if they aren't adding to it in a positive way. That's not to say I don't care about people or friends who may be going through troubles. Just that I don't have to put up with 'Negative Nellies', gossips and backbiters, users, and people always looking to get one up on you.

...because I not only do I no longer have to work, I'm actually being paid NOT to work (pension). DH and I are free to do what we want, when we want. No more 'time clock' and with adult children, no more 'responsibilities' (other than to each other).

....because I love looking back on my life and seeing what I've learnt and how I've grown. And I love imparting the wisdom of my years to others (but only on request, of course!).

Life is GOOD.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/02/2020 01:02

Oh and i can still party like a 20 yr old, even if it takes me 4 days to recover.

managedmis · 02/02/2020 01:03

Increased confidence. Can walk in heels. And since having kids I've started complaining a lot more about shit and being more assertive. If I can parent 2 children appropriately, you are gonna listen to what I say.

And people actually treat me like I'm an adult. Like, I actually look like a woman! Shock

managedmis · 02/02/2020 01:06

Also, I appreciate how good it was being a teen /young person without all this ridiculous social media bullshit and pressure. Fuck me, we were lucky if we had a disposabal camera with us!

Redrosesandsunsets · 02/02/2020 01:39

I feel like I see everything more clearly. All the nonsense and pressure to care what others think - it’s gone ! Hah I don’t really care anymore. It’s great. As someone else says “wisdom” - that helps

PH30B3 · 02/02/2020 06:38

Financially secure happy happy in my own skin and don't have to justify putting my pjs on and going to sleep at 9pm on a Saturday night if i don't want to

Nicolastuffedone · 02/02/2020 07:14

I don’t need any validation. I don’t need to post selfies of myself on FB standing at a door (always a door or in a public toilet!!?) with my legs crossed and a hand on my hip waiting for ‘looking stunning hun’ comments....
I took early retirement and can enjoy museums, concerts, theatre matinees, free or concession.
I’m invisible! I go about my day with no-one bothering me, I’m no-ones demographic any more!! 😀

Newyearsameoldme2020 · 02/02/2020 07:30

I have more money and am more sensible with it

Funkycats · 02/02/2020 07:33
