What's some good cosy escapist TV?

I'm having a hard time with my mental health and need some dramas to watch. Preferably cosy or easy viewing. BBC IPlayer and other catch-up services are full of box sets but I don't know where to begin. Any recommendations old or new would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Blimey, that's some typo.

WoollyMummoth · 01/02/2020 08:09

Bergerac, John Nettles at his finest!
Whilst you’re watching all the great stuff already suggested look out for reruns of Ballykissangel and Monarch of the Glen. They chilled me out on a Sunday night when I wanted to forget it was the end of the weekend!

Schitt's Creek on Netflix/C4 is very funny, quirky, and surprisingly warm and feelgood

The Detectorists, Mum, Gone Fishing.

Don’t think anyone’s mentioned Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Set in 1920s Australia, great fun, fabulous clothes & equally fabulous heroine.

Agree with PPs about John Nettles Midsomer, Miss Marple, Miranda, Schitts Creek, New Tricks, Pride and Prejudice, etc. All totally brilliant and escapist.

Also shout out for Ghosts - it's on iPlayer at the moment. Lovely, silly, funny, moving, brilliant cast and fantastic setting - can't say enough good things about it tbh! It reminds me of stuff I used to laugh at as a kid, and just get absolute fits of giggles - love it!!

Now I feel like watching loads of these programmes Smile

@dayswithaY where can I find Pat and Margaret to watch?! I remember watching that years ago and loving it.

OP for a drama I recommend a Very English Scandal with Hugh Grant - very entertaining and great acting. The Good Wife has loads of episodes and is easy to watch.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

Another vote for Merlin! I loved it when it was on, and am really loving watching it again - starting to mourn that I'm getting to the end of the series Sad

I felt like this this week, I watched
The secret garden
The railway children
Persuasion (with Rupert Penry Jones)
I'd imagine darling buds of may would be good to.
I also like Poirot and Miss Marple, no blood and gore and lovely sets/costumes/locations

foxystoatfoxypig · 01/02/2020 10:03

A discovery of witches!

I watched an episode of classic eastenders yesterday while eating lunch whilst it isnt exactly cosy it was from 1992 a time when I was at home with nothing to worry about other than friendships and GCSEs. It didnt feel like it at the time but looking back it was cosy and lovely, I was looked after by my mum and my dad and my brothers were there and it was safe and loving home without a care...

Oooh - the new Worzel Gummidge was good too. Only two episodes but gentle and fun.

MotheringShites · 01/02/2020 11:14

Schitts Creek is helping me deal with a broken leg!

comingupafterthebreak · 01/02/2020 11:16

I was coming on to suggest Monarch of the Glen and Bergerac too - but pps got there before me Smile

If you want sheer silliness you can't go wrong with Allo Allo!

ClientQueen · 01/02/2020 11:24

Totally forgot about Anne with an E - I'm actually jealous if you haven't seen it because it's so lovely. Totally not my usual thing but I was hooked

dayswithaY · 01/02/2020 14:33

SapphosRock sadly I think you'll only find Pat and Margaret on YouTube, the DVD is on Amazon but it's expensive. It is wonderful though:-

If you are going beyond drama then The Repair Shop is on Iplayer and it is truly balm for the modern age. People take in well loved but broken or seemingly beyond repair heirlooms and this talented group of crafts people restore them to their glory. It regularly has me in bits - it's truly wonderful.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/02/2020 14:44

If you have Channel5 catch-up then I really recommend 'Pie In The Sky', it's a box set drama series that I watch at least once a year, it's delightful.

toomanyleggings · 01/02/2020 14:46

I watch Victoria wood stand up. It's on Netflix I think. That woman has got me through some really bad times.

sparkli · 01/02/2020 14:56

I don't sleep well and suffer from bouts of depression. My go to watching list:
Rosemary and Thyme
Midsomer Murders
Death in Paradise
The Brokenwood Mysteries
New Tricks
Father Brown

I remember watching an episode or two of that some time ago and really enjoying it. I looked on Channel 5 catch-up/My5 but it doesn't seem to be on there, I may have to find the DVD if not.

There's also 'Jonathan Creek', Spieluhr, I love the series 1-3 with Alan Davies and Caroline Quentin but they're all good really. That's on Netflix I think? It's definitely on one of them.

Spieluhr · 01/02/2020 15:17

Thank you. Jonathan Creek sounds perfect too. Looks like it's on BBC IPlayer too. I'll add it to the list.

Only fools and horses
First Dates

comingupafterthebreak · 01/02/2020 15:22

All Creatures Great and Small - one of my all-time favourites.

Not drama series, but:
Great Canal Journeys with Timothy West and Prunella Scales.
Anything with Michael Portillo and trains is worth a look (trust me!!).
Coast.
