If so, what job was it?

I must admit, it’s always a good one to trot out when people are comparing notes on ‘worst job they ever had’. Grin

Ironically, I featured in their brochures for years, because they’d had photos done of us all in our costumes for promotional purposes. That must have pissed them off no end, the faces of absconding elves smiling back at them from their own brochures!

I worked in a cafe when I was at school. My then bf got me the job, as his aunt ran it. She told me I wouldn't be working after this week (the job was going to the bf's new girlfriend that I wasn't supposed to know about- he was cheating on me - but I did and guessed that would be why I wasn't needed). I disappeared 'to the loo' 20 minutes before the lunchtime time rush and never went back.

I left a managerial job about 25 years ago after disagreeing with decisions that affected the area I managed, without notice. Painful for the 18 months of short-term work etc until I joined the company I am with and have been ever since.

I was made redundant from my job in financial services when I was 19 and the only job I could get quickly (during the financial crisis so a hiring freeze in the sector) was in retail. The manager was so awful that managers from other stores would ask if she was in, and would phone back on her day off to avoid speaking to her. Not only was she a bitch to staff but she frequently made racist comments about the store cleaner. She also sent a girl home for wearing shorts - she said she was too fat to wear them.

The final straw was after my long term boyfriend broke up with me and when I turned up for my shift wearing no make up, she told me that we should look like ‘walking mannequins’ and to either sort my face out or go home. She said she could click her fingers and fill my job so I should be grateful.

I found a temp admin job at the local council, walked into her office and told her I wouldn’t be back.

I heard years later than she was finally fired for racially abusing a staff member.

I worked as a lab tech in the early 70s. My boss was a horrible little man. I couldn't get one of the preps to work and he told me I was doing it wrong. I told him to fuck himself, rang my mum to collect me, left then and there and never went back!

Yes, walked out of a retail job after about 7 weeks. Immediate supervisor was initially friendly, but it became apparent after a couple of weeks that she was withholding information from me that meant I got into trouble for not doing things (that I didn't know I was supposed to do). She left me wandering around the store looking for the rest of the visual display team for two weeks, whilst they were all cosied up in their visual room (which I had no idea even existed, never mind where it was). She hated me speaking to other members of staff in different departments, and would demand to know what our conversations had been about. When I said it was just chit-chat, she went to the store manager to complain about my talking about her with other people. She was responsible for assigning our shifts. I was left to do three Sunday shifts in a row. When the next shift rota came out, my colleague got one Sunday, then I was back on again. When I asked why I only got one Sunday off, she replied that she didn't feel it fair to ask colleague to do more than one on a row. When I pointed out that I'd done three in a row, was getting one off and then right back on to another Sunday, she huffed and puffed, but finally said she'd give ask Lin to do two in a row "as a favour to you". Last straw was her going to the store manager to say I'd sworn at her. I'd said the "f" word when I cut myself badly. Apparently, that was swearing AT HER. I just told the store manager that I gave up, handed her my badge and walked away. It was minimum wage, and literally not worth the anxiety. Stupid bitch is still there, ten years later, not been promoted, still climbing ladders and dressing dummies.
