If so, what job was it?

I actually have never walked out of a job but one of the post here took me back . I used to hate this particular job so much that I very seriously considered crashing my car on the way most mornings. I spent 7 years in that job before moving on. Looking back I should have gone a lot sooner.

EllaEllaE · 31/01/2020 17:56

@VenusClapTrap that is amazing! Sounds like it ought to be the plot for a movie Grin

Twice, both a number of years ago! First job out of university was working for an MP, he was a bully and so inappropriate, one day when I had enough I just said fuck you and walked out, best day ever, the office manager rang to ask if I was coming back, told her no and she sent me a card later in the week saying well done and keep in touch! And before that at a cinema chain, again a bullying manager but a less dramatic exit, I just walked out on my lunch hour and never came back.

Retail. Worked in a convenience store as a supervisor. New manager came in and had it in for me from day one. I’d worked there 2 years with no problems whatsoever but apparently everything I did was wrong. She was awful to the other staff too.

I waited until I knew she was on the day shift and was supposed to be having a big night out, she had been bleating on about for weeks. The other supervisor was unavailable (I knew because it was my flat mate) and if I didn’t turn up she would have to work the shift. Phoned and told her I wasn’t coming. She told me I’d be fired if I didn’t come in, I told her that was fine by me. She tried to backtrack, I hung up with a comment that if she wants to keep staff she needs to treat them a whole lot better as they are all on the verge of quitting. It felt brilliant.

The other time was as a teenager working in a posh hotel bar. Another new manager who everyone hated. He asked me to do something and I explained I needed to finish what I was doing first then I would do what he was asking. He told me to do it now or leave. I said fine I’d leave. He told me I wouldn’t get very far in life with my attitude. I told him that if I needed to have his attitude to get anywhere in life, I’d rather not. I’d prefer not to be a twat. He got really angry. I laughed and walked out.

Yes. I was a student working in a petrol station supermarket for a bit of holiday spending money. I booked the holiday and they said I couldn't take it so I left.

Shadyshadow · 31/01/2020 18:20

Twice. Though the second time my bosses boss chased me and begged me back. I was moving department the next week, so my new boss called and begged too. My old boss was told if he even looked at me wrong he would be out.

He decided my last day was the day to treat me like shit. I snapped threw my pass at him and told him to shove it up his arse. Then walked to my desk. Got my bag and walked.

Once I went home in the middle of the afternoon. Called in sick the next week and didnt go back. It was an awful place and I ended up on anti depressants. They tried to fuck me over when I handed my notice in so I went to the VP. Who emailed me personally and apologised and sorted it all out.

Shadyshadow · 31/01/2020 18:20

Sorry the third paragraph was a different job

mynamesmrdiggety · 31/01/2020 18:21

Yes, cheese factory when I was a student. Did about six weeks cutting the rind off Stilton but I stank of cheese all the time

Murinae · 31/01/2020 18:22

I walked out of a pgce school placement and never went back. Didn’t finish the course but got a great job instead.

Workybloodyworkwork · 31/01/2020 18:28

Yes, I was a senior manager in a large national charity - had raised a grievance after being bullied by my manager which was a bloody nightmare. After it was all dealt with —brushed under the carpet— I went to a national management meeting 200 miles away from home. The meeting was horrific (I took a panic attack, my colleague threw up through nerves and the chairperson made personal attack after personal attack.

I left, drove home (leaving my other two colleagues to find their own way back, got signed off sick and never went back. I’ve also turned down a job before starting but after leaving my old job. I tend to land on my feet.

Namethecat · 31/01/2020 18:31

Was doing a temp to perm job for Thames Water.
Was shown to a desk where the supervisor gave me a 5 minute training talk and then walked away . I was expected to phone customers who had a water leak outside their home and work out the loss of water which would be taken off the bill (I think)
Managed 1.5 days , no-one asked how I was doing, nor checked I was doing it correctly.

managedmis · 31/01/2020 18:32

Yes, famous high Street chemist. I'm not waiting till 5pm to be told off about some random shit. So I told her so and walked.

nixkix · 31/01/2020 18:34

I know a teacher who did that, she'd had enough of teaching and left without warning. God knows how bad it must have been to do that.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 31/01/2020 18:38

In my mind all the elves escaping from Lapland did so in costume, in some sort of reindeer pulled sleighs driven by Sami in traditional outfits. Please don't tell me otherwise. Grin

savemejebus · 31/01/2020 18:38

@MissKittyFantastico84 ooh I worked at Oceana too, for probably the best 2 months of my life GrinGrinWineWine

minou123 · 31/01/2020 18:45

Yep. Bar staff in a nightclub.
Bank holiday sunday, all day opening, so working 9 hours plus
In the middle of the shift the 2 managers said there was not enough staff, so none of us could have a break for the FULL 9 hours.

I suggested that they could cover for staff breaks, but they dismissed this saying they were too busy.
An hour later, I saw the 2 managers chatting up the female club dancers and enjoying champagne.
I was furious. I stopped serving, shouted at them for being waste of spaces and walked out

Morgan12 · 31/01/2020 18:45

@herbsmokedchicken if you worked in Glasgow that might have been me lol

DivisionBelles · 31/01/2020 18:48

Yes, in my early 20s when I was working as a junior accounts clerk. Was being bullied by my manager, although at the time I didn't recognise this as bullying. Was called in to the general managers office, with the head of HR there as well. I had no idea what it was about. Was told my work was not up to scratch. Bullying manager had been piling more and more work on me, I had no chance of getting though it all and she was essentially setting me up to fail because she didn't like me. I told them both to fuck off and walked out. Sat at my desk for a few minutes and made a few false entries onto the ledger, then went home. Was such a relief to get away from that bullying hell hole.

Galvantula · 31/01/2020 18:50

I was a student, retail, card shop at Christmas time.I lasted 2 weeks. Expected to work late which wasn't mentioned at interview and got barely any breaks.

Fuck that shit.

Sonichu · 31/01/2020 18:57

When I was 18 I had a god awful job working in a call centre near Glasgow Airport. The call centre manager was a bully who took great pleasure in embarrassing and berating staff in front of the whole building and she was very friendly with someone on the same team as me who was also a nasty little bitch and loved to talk about people and stir shit. I only lasted about 6 weeks but I ended up so stressed that my mum told me that if I was really so unhappy then I should leave.

One day I went in, sat at my desk as normal, and then just thought "fuck this" and got back up and walked out. Horrible, horrible job and I think I'd sooner sell drugs than work in another call centre!

knightlight · 31/01/2020 18:59

Worked for a an overpriced rubbish clothes shop at uni, rhymes with SuperCry. Booked a holiday how I was told by putting a form in a folder in the office. Told assistant manager I was doing this and we had a whole conversation about where I was going on holiday.

Was then told by manager later down the line I couldn't have the holiday as I hadn't booked it - I insisted I had followed the policy and to ask the assistant manager. She completely denied seeing the form or having the convo with me and basically said I was lying.

I waited for payday, walked in with my badge put it on the counter and said I won't be working here anymore and went on my holiday.

StarySkyTonight · 31/01/2020 19:06

Yes, 4 years ago. I had been working some temp jobs and this job came up just as my other temp job was finishing. It started as a temp going to permanent at 8 weeks in. I walked out 6 weeks in. There was a huge culture of bullying, bitching and backbiting and the systems were not up to doing the job that needed doing. I had spoken to my line manager and eventually the boss of the office area I worked in. I had lots of promises of things being dealt with and changed etc but nothing ever happened. I walked out one early Wednesday afternoon after telling the boss I was leaving and not coming back. He was really shocked but as I explained to him that I had given the job a reasonable chance and spoken to them about the issues I was encountering but nothing was resolved despite promises to do so.

I started a new temp job the Monday after, my agency was behind me all the way and decided to drop the company I walked out from as it had happened before with other temps, I wasn't best pleased when they told me that after the fact and asked them not to send anything my way like that again.

It was absolutely the best thing I could have done in that situation, the last week or so there I was in tears before, during and after work and I knew it wasn't sustainable. The 'big boss' of the company called me about a week after asking if I would reconsider and go back, I thanked him but declined his offer.

OvaltinaTurner · 31/01/2020 19:09

Twice.
Burger King - Friday night shift so lots of drunken, abusive and leery twunts...that I could cope with but my male supervisor was an utter arse and made a bad situation worse so I walked out. His face was a picture. No regrets.
Pub - Again a late shift so took a lot from the punters. Stayed to the end of that shift but did not return the next day as it was rough as fk and I had felt vulnerable. Also no regrets.

I always post the following on these threads...if you are looking for motivation Wink

TSSDNCOP · 31/01/2020 19:10

Yes I worked directly for the owner of a fashion retailer who is a fucking nut job. I’ve never seen a person get so angry. I used to sit hoping he’d have stroke. Wish I’d believed what I read on Glass door. Tip of the iceberg. I locked up on a Friday of my 6th week and lobbed the keys back through the letterbox.
