Planning a half-term break at Center Parcs? Did you know their communal spa changing rooms are no longer single sex?

You may have read a story in the papers in October last year where a transwoman called Vicky Hodges went to Center Parcs and wasn't allowed to use the communal women's changing rooms at the Aqua Sana spa but was directed to a private changing room instead. Vicky has not taken any hormones, does not have a GRC and is still a male-bodied person to all intents and purposes.

Article about Vicky and photo: www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/10/30/center-parcs-trans-woman-changing-rooms-equalities-act-victoria-hodges/

Vicky wasn't happy about this and on a thread in FWR confirmed this month that CP has said Vicky is absolutely welcome to walk through the women's communal changing areas and use one of the private changing cubicles (of which there are only 2 or 3).

This is Vicky's post:

"Just a quick update. I can confirm Vicky Hodges and Center Parcs had a very amicable conversation just before Christmas and the issue of changing room access for transgender customers was resolved. Center Parcs confirmed that they do have a private changing cubicle within the Aqua Sana, open plan, female changing room and that Vicky was more than welcome to use it and the changing room as she wishes to. Center Parcs also confirmed they are a fully inclusive organisation. I can also confirm that Vicky has now been to Center Parcs, used the changing room and she had a great weekend with her family.
How do I know all this? Well "GirlOnTheRoof" is Vicky Hodges... 💃🏻🙋🏻‍♀️"

and this is the thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3731052-Center-Parcs-upholding-single-sex-spaces?pg=3

so if you were planning to take your teenage daughter to the spa at half term, you might want to think again.

I think the 3% statistic applies to sexual assault, rather than exclusively rape (happy to be corrected) but that is still a huge percentage in just 12 months.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 31/01/2020 09:04

'Only 3%' wtf! How anyone can say that is beyond me.

'Oh that's ok then because ONLY 3% of women were attacked' silly me for thinking that might be a problem. Unfuckingbelievable

I'm genuinely surprised to hear this from CP, family friendly is their bag surely. And if this is the spa, how long until the swimming pool follows suit

Langsdestiny · 31/01/2020 10:52

It's being mentioned on another thread that there was a reason for no debate on this subject, because when no debate disappears and people have to engage with the issue they say things like only 3% of women per year are raped, and then hundreds.of women go wait, what?
No debate was easy, actual discussion reveals the unpleasant views underneath.

I see Vicky came back to the other thread continuing to be baffled that the women Vicky absolutely refuses to consider, respect or listen to just wont jump to do whatever Vicky says.

It's staggering people are really this socially incompetent. It's like trying to reason with a toddler.

So centre park’s policy is now self ID. Which means that any boys and men who wish to do so can use facilities. So they are mixed sex and should be labelled as such.

So pissed off with the loss of single sex facilities and services. I worry especially about women's refuge housing and services and the NHS employing male bodied people in roles / services previously women only.

When I had to have gynae / miscarriage procedures under anaesthetic it was on a mixed sex day unit, with no privacy. Not great, but at least the set up was clear.

VenusTiger · 01/02/2020 23:35

@HandsOffMyLangCleg I was talking about choice not possibility of assault

Clymene · 11/03/2020 19:23

I thought I'd update this thread as several posters have had it confirmed that if you object to a man walking through or using the communal changing rooms at the spa, you can use the disabled facilities

So what happens when a person with limited mobility and low pain threshold on a lot of meds just to get through the day needs that facility as in relies on it rather than chooses to use it but has to wait in pain outside because they can’t access it??

Confused
Clymene · 11/03/2020 21:18

I guess you'll just have to wait until all the other women and girls have finished using it 365calendar

Because CP clearly think that - although women and girls make up probably 99% of their Aqua Sana clientele - their right for single sex spaces (and your right as a disabled person for accessible spaces) are much less important than the rights of someone who identifies as transgender.

We really need a lawyer to challenge this shit. Our protected characteristics are not being protected.

Oh and by the way, the 'only' 3% of women get raped figure? That's just under A MILLION women in this country. 'Only' a million women get raped so there's no problem with mixed sex facilities that increase the risk of getting raped.

WTAF? FFS
