What coffee do you drink?

I’ve never previously been a coffee drinker but over the last few months I seem to have developed a worrying Starbucks dependence. My drink of choice is a white chocolate mocha (I’m aware that coffee purists will be horrified by this and I realise it’s barely more than hot milk and syrup with a dribble of coffee in it 😁)

Anyway, I’m slightly concerned by how much money I’m spending in Starbucks, so I’m wondering about trying some coffee I can make myself. I’m currently drinking a Nestle Vanilla Latte which surprisingly isn’t entirely horrible.

What do you drink - from coffee shops or made at home?

To horrify the coffee purists even more I'm proud to drink instant Nescafe Gold Blend Intense. I love it black with 1 sugar so not much use as a recommendation for you. I drink between 6 and 8 large mugs per day and that's what I've so far managed to cut back to.
If I'm out and about I have to take my own in my thermal cup as I find coffee shop black coffee a bit burnt tasting and I'd never justify the expense when a whole jar of instant costs the same as 1 shop bought cup. My mum spends a fortune on fancy beans and machine capsules but I'm too tight but also happy with my bank balance.

Lavazza

EssentialHummus · 30/01/2020 14:01

I buy flavoured coffees online - hazelnut, cinnamon, cookie dough and so on. I make them myself with a bit of demerara sugar and warm milk, lovely for the school run and a fraction of the monetary and environmental cost.

ImpossibleGirl86 · 30/01/2020 14:07

Make a hot chocolate with a bit of any old coffee powder added 🤷 I steal some of my husbands azera something or other to add to my hot chocolate if I feel like I need a caffeine boost as I can't stand the stuff generally!

SpoonBlender · 30/01/2020 14:10

Oh, I thought this was going to be a coffee thread :(

Andersonx3 · 30/01/2020 14:12

Beanies coffee (flavoured - coconut is my fave!) or the sachets of Nescafé Gold latte/mocha in various flavours at the mo! Regular coffee we have Kenco Rich.

JuneFromBethesda · 30/01/2020 14:15

@HaudMaDug and @EssentialHummus no need to apologise, being new to the delights of coffee I’m interested to hear what people drink. Also hoping I might eventually graduate to a more grown-up caffeinated beverage one day 😄

Having said that I’m loving the sound of @punknarwhal’s drinks - what ratio of coffee to warm milk do you use?

hazeyjane · 30/01/2020 14:18

Chain coffee, I like Cafe Nero.
Home coffee, Lavazza Red brewed in a stove top coffee pot with hot milk.

SpoonBlender · 30/01/2020 14:21

Closest I get to this is making latte - I've got a bean to cup machine with a steamer, so two-thirds of a mug milk (preheat for 1m30 in the microwave then steam with the machine - if you don't, then heat for a bit longer in the microwave and use a Bodum cafetiere to froth it), then a double-shot of espresso in the top.

Espresso beans are usually Decaff Colombian (swiss water process) by redmonkeycoffee.co.uk, which are amazing - it's impossible to tell they're decaff except you don't buzz or need to pee all the time.

AlCalavicci · 30/01/2020 14:23

@SpoonBlender ha ha me too.

@JuneFromBethesda I won't be much help to you as I like my coffee strong and black with no sugar
I generally drink Tesco's own French style coffee number 5 and use a cafetiere or occasionally I will use Whittards Guatemalan elephant Whittards.

If I do buy it from a coffee shop Nero's is my my go to place, or Costa at a push.
I can't stand Starbucks coffee in any form

Glittercandle · 30/01/2020 14:25

I use a cafetier and Ocado ground coffee.

Gogolego · 30/01/2020 14:26

Costa Cappuccino with one less shot in it when I'm out

Nescafé gold blend when at home

HerRoyalFattyness · 30/01/2020 14:26

I drink Nescafé. Regular old Nescafé Grin

But my coffee shop of choice is Nero.

Stravapalava · 30/01/2020 14:27

Tassimo coffee machine coffee at home. The colombian instant granules from aldi at work - it's actually lovely coffee!! From coffee shops tends to be a "treat", so I'll have something like an almond milk mocha.

FruityWidow · 30/01/2020 14:27

Whatever is on offer at the time around the 3/4 strength mark. I'm pretty boring and like it with just a drop of milk or cream and no sugar.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 30/01/2020 14:33

We buy fresh coffee beans online, or sometimes from M&S or Booths, and we have a Sage Oracle Touch coffee machine at home. Mine is usually a Latte, DH likes a double shot Americano, DS has a mocha.

Out and about, the best and nicest coffee is actually McDonalds coffee.

InOtterNews · 30/01/2020 14:34

First thing in the morning when I'm chugging down a cup at lightning speed: Nescafe Azera Espresso (black no sugar)
When I arrive in London: Venti extra-hot cappuccino fro Starbucks
Mid-morning: Sang Tao 1 (which I import from Vietnam) which has the most amazing caffeine content so this is my final coffee of the day (black no sugar)

Growingboys · 30/01/2020 14:36

I get beans from Dark Woods Coffee and make my own in my Delonghi bean to cup machine. Sorry to sound poncey but it's fucking great and makes me happy.

When I'm out, Caffe Nero does decent coffee and Starbucks the worst of all the specialist coffee chains.

Branleuse · 30/01/2020 14:37

my long standing favourite is Taylors - after dark www.taylorsofharrogate.co.uk/products/after-dark/

I find it really smooth while still being strong. Delicious.
I make it with one of those aeropress thingys.
www.amazon.co.uk/Aerobie-AeroPress-A80-Coffee-Maker/dp/B000GXZ2GS/ref=asc_df_B000GXZ2GS/?hvlocphy=1006644&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=218874155895&hvpone&hvlocint&th=1&hvpos=1o1&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=pla-387894758791&hvrand=2979632055886082034

Also Aldi Java is not bad, and also starbucks ground coffee is actually lovely to make at home. Their house blend is nice

Nothing2doooooo · 30/01/2020 14:40

I like coffee. I love mocha. I love latte....caramel? Even better. Don't care about any purists or whatever.

I buy from anywhere if I feel up to it but prefer Costa.

Nothing2doooooo · 30/01/2020 14:41

I usually drink decaffeinated at home though, for some reason.

JuneFromBethesda · 30/01/2020 14:45

It's like learning a foreign language. I have no idea where to start.

I'm very intrigued by all the different gadgets and flavours though. I'll have to start branching out.

thefirsttimer · 30/01/2020 14:58

Out and about I prefer Cafe Nero or Costa to Starbucks. At home we have a Sage Nespresso machine and it makes the nicest coffee ever

Myshitisreal · 30/01/2020 15:09

I drink Tesco Italian style ground coffee by cafetiere daily and haven't found an instant I like. Out I buy cafe nero iced cappuccino as a treat before work, I take my own cup and earn double stamps (so get a free coffee every 5 instead of ten) . They have to used Skimmed milk to get the froth so it's fairly low on calories. I like it with a sprinkle of cocoa powder, where I take sugar in coffee at home. People add syrups but I find them too synthetic tasting. I have to confess, we have a coffee machine sat here for years and neither of us have ever worked out how to use it. It's become a crap filled surface, and has never been used 🥴🙈😵😳 maybe today is the day I actually clean it up, read the instructions and use the bloody thing 😂 😳 I don't have a metal hug so I need to learn how to stream milk with the thingy on the side
