I was getting the shopping out of the boot earlier, lifted a crate of water out with one hand and felt a horrible sensation in the muscle round my shoulder.
It sort of 'popped' then I felt a burning sensation, followed by agony.

I've tried ice, heat, ibuprofen and co-codamol (30/500 that I'm prescribed for another problem) but nothing is touching it.
I went to put some voltarol gel on the area but touching it is agony.

It's been 7 hours now and I can't move my arm properly without pain shooting around the area.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm going to ring the GP in the morning for an appointment but I am not looking forward to sleeping tonight.
I haven't even been able to get pyjamas on because I can't lift my arm Sad

Please tell me it's nothing serious (I know you can't, but anyway...)

Have to say, if I sit very still the pain is there but it feels more like a burning, tension sensation.
When I move my arm it makes me want to yelp.

Could you have dislocated your shoulder with that pop?

SuperFurryDoggy · 28/01/2020 19:46

That sounds horrible Sad I’ve absolutely no idea what it could be, but didn’t want to read and run.

@CormoranStrike I was concerned about that, but thought if it were the case I'd be able to see.

It was the pop and crunch, plus the burning that made me think torn muscle but I don't know Sad

dontgobaconmyheart · 28/01/2020 19:51

No minor injuries unit locally OP? I would probably justgo, especially if you've got any numbness or lack of movement in your hand- it might be better off in a sling and they can likely tell you the cause pretty quickly by examination.

I'm sure its nothing serious in the sense of actually life threatening, surely at worst you've subluxated or dislocated it and it'll need to heal, or you've pulled a muscle/torn a ligament and again, will need time to heal. Sounds unpleasant OP Flowers

CormoranStrike · 28/01/2020 19:52

Def worth the checking

PickleMyPepper · 28/01/2020 19:56

@dontgobaconmyheart unfortunately not Sad and I really don't want to waste A&Es time, our hospital caters for a large area and is very busy at the minute.
I'll hold out until the morning to get it checked by the GP.

I know it's nothing dangerous, but the pain is awful and I don't know how I'm meant to just continue when stronger painkillers don't work Sad also scared about keeping it still and it getting worse.

Bastard body.

Have you iced it? If you have a pack of peas or the like in the freezer try putting that over your shoulder. Only for 15-20 mins though just to reduce any inflammation.

If you call 111 they may be able to get you an appt tonight with an out of hours GP.

MidsomerBurgers · 28/01/2020 20:00

You may have torn your rotator cuff. I had similar and the pain knocked me sick.

You may have slightly dislocated it. Either way, you need to get it checked out if you're in that much -increasing- pain.

PickleMyPepper · 28/01/2020 20:02

Torys I did ice it, then tried heat too. The ice was ok but only worked for a few minutes - heat did sweet fuck all.
Didn't think of that, will give them a call. Thank you.

Midsomer Ouch. What did they do to help you? I'm worried that'll put my arm out of action.

OP posts:
Sameold2020 · 28/01/2020 20:02

I think you need to get checked.

MitziK · 28/01/2020 20:08

Hospital. Make sure it isn't dislocated first.

Feelingsolost1 · 28/01/2020 20:15

Ouch, sounds very painful, hope your OK! I'm with the other poster, call 111 and get an app with an out of hours doctor, you need to be seen asap. X

PickleMyPepper · 28/01/2020 20:21

@MitziK I thought that if it was dislocated I'd really know about it - I mean this pain is bad, don't get me wrong, but could I really be?

OP posts:
BlueEyedFloozy · 28/01/2020 20:30

Ouch, sounds like you've torn a muscle. Phone 111 for advice and hopefully an OOH appointment to get you some decent pain meds.

Use a scarf to make a sling to keep it stable and elevated. It should hopefully ease the pain a little in the meantime.

PickleMyPepper · 28/01/2020 20:37

I'm going to give 111 a call now and see what they say.

@BlueEyedFloozy good idea about the sling! Although the thought of manoeuvring my arm like that makes me want to throw up, it might help.
Thank you.

MidsomerBurgers · 28/01/2020 20:46

I ended up having to have surgery on it.

Fantababy · 28/01/2020 20:48

I dislocated my shoulder pretty badly and you couldn't see anything externally. There wasn't even any bruising. It hurt A LOT though.

Fantababy · 28/01/2020 20:50

the thought of manoeuvring my arm like that makes me want to throw up,

That sounds very familiar.

MitziK · 28/01/2020 20:51

Yes, it could be. Especially as you can't move it alone or freely. And the movement that caused the pain is perfect for pulling it out.

Been there, done that. Found out about it for certain when it decided to go back in 48 hours later as I was asleep - the sound woke both of us up (and the DTwatCats). Needed physio afterwards as I hadn't got it seen to immediately - when they could have put it back easier.

Greyhound22 · 28/01/2020 21:06

I would pop up to A&E. Doctor can't really do anything other than pain relief which you've got and will have to send you to A&E anyway for an x-ray.

Honestly you've had an accident - they don't mind people going to be checked for stuff like this.

CormoranStrike · 28/01/2020 21:14

If dislocates the sooner it goes back in the better, in my bitter experience

PickleMyPepper · 28/01/2020 21:17

111 have said they'll get someone to give me a call when they can.
Also said if I start getting chest pains to ring 999, so I don't know if we were at mixed purposes.

Now that you've mentioned dislocation im starting to think it could be a possibility actually. The crunch wouldn't have occurred if it was just a muscle tear would it?
Ah, shall I just go to A&E then? Do I need to call 111 to tell them that I'm going?

I don't want anyone to touch my shoulder EnvySad

OP posts:
damnthatanxiety · 28/01/2020 21:24

I agree with a pp. torn rotator cuff. I'm suffering one at the moment. Keeps me awake at night the Iain is so bad.

longtimelurkerhelen · 28/01/2020 21:24

Wait for 111 to ring back, they can fast track you through a & e sometimes or send you to urgent care unit.

Does sound like it's either rotator cuff, dislocated or both. You poor thing.
