Surely I can’t be the only one!? Blush, anyone else here who has never worked a 12 hour shift or done a night shift?? Every job I have had had been 8 hr days or less!! I think I would collapse if I had to do a night shift. My current hours date 9-2.40 but I leave at about 3 so I suppose you could say 9-3 with 40 mins of breaks!!

@BertieBotts
Is it to do with minimising handovers?

That's what I'm told- I work in inpatient MH (not a nurse myself) and have previously questioned why there are two 12 hour shifts instead of three 8 hours shifts. I've been told it's mostly because of that. Also, more frequent shift changes mean more ward disruption. And apparently most staff prefer it that way- you get your hours done for the week in just 3 shifts and have more non working days.

Me. I worked in a shop and as a cleaner in the evenings when I was a student and full time in my office is 35 hours a week.

I work in finance in the City, I’ve done loads of 12hr+ days but I don’t consider this to be anywhere near the hard work on the body and mind of say a medic or a carer doing the same hours.

I used to work at a teletext holiday call centre and we used to do 9am- 10pm a few times a month! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Me!

The longest shift I've done is ten hours and my latest finish was 10pm.

So many as an ex medic.

Only on ambulance ride-outs (admin and clerical staff member but it was always helpful to see the front line). The Paramedics were always surprised that as an office-based, non-clinical staff member, I was early for shift, arrived with biscuits and stayed until the end Grin

I do 13 hours shifts daily I hate them 😒

DinosaurDreams · 29/01/2020 21:09

In my 20s I did night shifts 10pm-6am for around a year. It was awful in the winter. I barely saw daylight. Very depressing.

Icannotremember Makes sense. Thank you :) I will stop wondering about it.
