Surely I can’t be the only one!? Blush, anyone else here who has never worked a 12 hour shift or done a night shift?? Every job I have had had been 8 hr days or less!! I think I would collapse if I had to do a night shift. My current hours date 9-2.40 but I leave at about 3 so I suppose you could say 9-3 with 40 mins of breaks!!

Never ever done a night shift. I struggled as a bar maid working until midnight!
Teacher now so several times a year I'll do 12 hour shifts in the building; parents evenings, open evenings, shows, concerts etc. Im glad its not regular though as it's very tiring, hats off to people who do them regularly.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/01/2020 22:00

Only at Uni a few times a year, we'd work from about 10 am til 2am with breaks. Also did nights as in til 2am but never worked later than that.

Mammyloveswine · 28/01/2020 22:06

I'm a teacher and I got into school at 7am and left at 6pm...I've done 3 hours work at home too...

dayswithaY · 28/01/2020 22:10

When I worked in a City Law firm I regularly worked from 9am to midnight, no proper breaks, company paid for my cab home then straight back in the next morning. This normally happened about twice a week. I earned shed loads but had no idea how lucky I was and didn't spend it wisely.

ChasingRainbows19 · 28/01/2020 22:10

I work long days for nhs so 12.5 hrs we get half hour lunch break and half hour tea break. The benefits our way the bad for my lifestyle I prefer more days off Even working full time. But obviously it's hard work and very tiring too!

Lipperfromchipper · 28/01/2020 22:11

@Mammyloveswine our school isn’t even open at 7 Shock that is a looong day Sad

Emergency services 7-7 either day or night
The 3-4am slump is crap but there is nothing better than putting your pjs on, eating breakfast and getting into bed when everyone else is getting up. Especially if it's cold or raining
When you work the clock change, that's grim. You sit and watch it go 1.59am - 1am and silently cry Grin

han01uk · 28/01/2020 22:20

15 years of 12.5hr shifts so far...days,nights,weekends. I envy you all that haven't!

icannotremember · 28/01/2020 22:21

I love weird shifts tbh. I can't make then work for me now with three dc and limited childcare options, but I like nights and twilights and patterns out of sync with the M-F 9-5. I always say when my DC are grown I'd like to work on an EDT, I really do like the hours as well as the endless variety.

Summer job in Jackson’s bakery when I was a student - 6pm - 6am, 6 days a week. 72 hours for a 150 quid.

Mammyloveswine · 28/01/2020 22:29

I’m friends with the cleaner and I’m going in with her tomorrow at 5.30 as I have that much to do 😭😭

Macaroni46 · 28/01/2020 22:34

Regularly work 11 or 12 hour days plus on email around those hours. (Also expected to check email at weekends and during the holidays)

My job - head teacher

mumtumdocare · 28/01/2020 23:21

Yup, worked 12 hour shifts day and nights for 11 years. They're horrible. Best part is coming home to bed when everyone else is starting the day.

Heartofglass12345 · 29/01/2020 00:26

I've never not done it lol. I have never worked in an office, or done a 9-5

DramaAlpaca · 29/01/2020 00:28

No never. My longest day in the office at busy times has been about 10 hours. No overnights, ever.

TOP TIP - When I was still working nights, as soon as we could book leave for the year the first thing I would check was if I was working the October clock change and book it off if necessary. Then once it had been granted, if I liked the person I had meant to been working with, I'd point it out to them so they could do the same. Only worked it once in 10 years.

The trust does now pay overtime for the extra hour, you used to just have to work it for free!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 29/01/2020 07:31

My husband has only ever worked 9-5 Monday to Friday.

I've never worked regular hours, always shifts, nights and short days, long 14 hour days, 12.5 hour shifts. Currently I do 12.5 hour shifts which I love.

3 X 12.5 hour days a week plus an admin day every second week. Means I can do bank shifts and still have time off.

FlashingFedora · 29/01/2020 07:41

Veterinary industry, night shifts are 14 hours, to cover the hours general practices are closed. Did 3 years straight of 14 hour nights, never again. Not as bad as how it used to be before emergency clinics became a thing when you would do a week of days, a week of nights then a few days off. Chopping and changing was way harder than permanent nights. Never had a 9-5 job.

ChilliMayo · 29/01/2020 07:43

I do 10 hour night shifts, but only 2 a week, couldn't do more. I'm quite well paid for it and there is little difference from the salary I'd get locally for working full time in retail or an office.
The plus side is that my working week is over and done with in a 36 hr burst (including travelling time) leaving me to forget about work for the next 132 hrs of the week.
If I were doing a 9-5 type job then thoughts of what I had to do tomorrow, what to wear to work, what to get out of the freezer for dinner etc would stretch from Sunday night to Friday morning.
I have a quiet pre-nights day with an afternoon rest on the sofa, the in between day I sleep much of it (dh deals with everything) then after a morning sleep post-nights I'm fine.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2020 07:48

Never have. I had a baby at 20 so most of my life I've had childcare issues for those kinds of jobs. I think I'd be OK at night shifts but DH did them for 2 years and his health started to suffer.

RiftGibbon · 29/01/2020 07:50

No, I have only worked in industries with 'regular' hours - although when I worked in banking it wasn't unusual to do a 10 hour day, and occasionally 11.
My only overnight work has been writing up
parts of a dissertation when I was falling behind.

dottiedodah · 29/01/2020 08:39

Never done one never really wanted to! Some of my friends are Nurses and one does all night shifts (no days!) no idea how they manage TBH!Only ever worked days thats enough for me .I think lots of jobs ie Large corporate bank near us has night shifts due to foreign markets being on different time zones and so on . Hats off to the wonderful emergency services who work so hard for us though!

amusedbush · 29/01/2020 08:49

I used to work 9-5 as front of house in a private student accommodation (i.e. not affiliated to any one university) and during one move-in period I worked twelve back to back 12 hour shifts. I hated it!

BertieBotts · 29/01/2020 13:21

I do often wonder why medical workers eg paramedics, nurses and so on do 12 hour shifts as standard, does anyone know? It must be really tricky to concentrate and work at full capacity by the end of a 12 hour shift and yet these are some of the most important jobs in the world. Is it to do with minimising handovers?

Sonichu · 29/01/2020 13:30

I used to regularly work from 8am till 1030pm with no real "breaks" and I worked alone for much of this and had to eat when I could. I've never had an office job!
