I'm past that stage of my life but I thought I'd post this for those who haven't.... apologies if this isn't news!

Ok. I’m really into these. They’ve basically changed my life. I’ve had them over a year, so am now at the stage where the investment is saving me money.

  1. There are different types for different levels of flow
  2. They absorb MUCH more than a tampon or pad. If you’ve got a heavy flow this is what you wasn’t.
  3. You get what you pay for (haven’t tried Sainsbury’s though). I don’t feel damp at all with modibodi but do with the cheaper ones.
  4. They seriously don’t leak
  5. I rinse them under the cold tap and shove them in the washing machine with my normal clothes. It’s been no issue.
TurduckenFucken · 27/01/2020 16:56

How long is the absorbent bit? I use washable pads but find some of them too short, certainly for night time.

AlexaAmbidextra · 27/01/2020 16:57

Alexa luckily we're no longer in the dark ages where women were told they were somehow dirty and unclean for a basic bodily function.

ItchySeveredFoot. I just love it when people put words into my mouth. Where did I say women were unclean or dirty? Which mean the same btw but it’s nice to have a bit of hyperbole I suppose. These are your words, not mine. I just wouldn’t want menstrual blood flowing unchecked into my knickers as it seems quite uncomfortable to me in that it could be wet and after some time would start to smell.

WheresMyChocolate · 27/01/2020 16:57

I can't think of anything worse. Reminds me of the period poverty and neglect of my childhood and wearing my wool PE knickers as they were the only absorbent things I could find.

Curioushorse · 27/01/2020 16:58

Honestly they’re way more absorbent than pads. Absorbent bit is big. Covers most of the pants apart from the sides.

DesLynamsMoustache · 27/01/2020 16:58

@TurduckenFucken Some are basically absorbent for most of the knicker, which is amazing for overnight. Most say on descriptions how far the absorbent bit goes. I have a pair from Cheeky Wipes that are basically entirely absorbent up the front and all up the back.

TurduckenFucken · 27/01/2020 16:59

Which brand do you use, Curioushorse? And what's the fit like?

TurduckenFucken · 27/01/2020 17:00

x post Des. Thanks!

CallofDoodee · 27/01/2020 17:02

Hmmm, interesting. I'm obsessed with my mooncup these days but when DD starts in a few years I will definitely try them. They do seem a bit old school, they are just essentially slightly more absorbent knickers?

And the reusable pads look very bulky?

Squoozie · 27/01/2020 17:02

'It's still there though! Just because you can't feel it, the blood doesn't magically disappear to a different dimension. The fabric is just designed so you can no longer feel it.'

But that still means you're not sitting in it, it's not on the surface of the fabric. It's exactly the same principle as disposable pads, where the blood is in the absorbent layer beneath the surface.

It's all academic to me, anyway, I'm perimenopausal and haven't had a period for 8 months.

NettleTea · 27/01/2020 17:03

heavy bleeding is the equivilent of more than 80ml over the period of a period. Most people lose less than this.
when stuff is absorbed it looks alot more than it actually is
so the average is 6-8 teaspoons over around 5 days
so nobody is going to be sitting in anything like a nappy full of wee's worth.

DesLynamsMoustache · 27/01/2020 17:04

This shows the layers on CW ones.

I don't use pads for precisely that reason though. You can feel the blood and it's just unpleasant.

But it's all personal opinion at the end of the day :)

BoxedWine · 27/01/2020 17:05

The modibodi ones are more absorbent than pads.

Squoozie · 27/01/2020 17:09

Tbf, @adaline, I never liked pads either, I hated the feel of the blood leaking out of me. I used tampons my entire life almost since my first period, I also couldn't get on with the Mooncup I bought at (to me) vast price. I'm glad I'm nearly done with the whole process Grin

nibdedibble · 27/01/2020 17:10

I use them every day of my period but use tampons as well for two of those days. Therefore I’m not using pads at all. They can’t cope with a heavy, perimenopausal flow (but what can? Grin) but for everything else they’re great.
Soak in cold water then machine wash with other underwear - not difficult.

Don’t tell anyone but I water the plants sometimes with the soaking water. Learned that aeons ago from MN Grin

Murinae · 27/01/2020 17:13

OK just ordered some modibodi for my daughters and one pair for me. They have quite heavy periods and use a tampon and a pad so hopefully this will at least save the pads. I'm past the menopause but have a problem with a weak bladder and sweat when I do sport. So going to try mine at walking netball next week.

nocluewhattodoo · 27/01/2020 17:16

Annoying that you can't read the reviews on the Sainsbury's website, I've been wanting to get some period pants for a while and these are at least a bit more adorable than the well known brands. I am a menstrual cup convert but I think I would prefer knickers overnight.

GothMummy · 27/01/2020 17:16

I don't like the idea of wearing the same San pro all day, even on light days I change pads (reusable) every two hours for freshness and hygiene. I don't like the idea of wearing blood soaked knickerpads all day at work, nor fancy the idea of stripping off skirt, shoes, tights e dry two hours in a work cubical toilet. So how do they work for people?

cz123 · 27/01/2020 17:18

I'm really sorry, but those look so unsexy, smelly and messy. It's a no from me!

2020runner · 27/01/2020 17:19

Such a shame to see words like "grim" used here. I really want to give period knickers ago but find them so expensive. Might give the sainsburys ones a try

ClientListQueen · 27/01/2020 17:21

Who gives a shit about feeling sexy on their period anyway? HmmConfused I mean tampons are hardly sexy
They're not messier than tampons or pads and they don't smell

5BlueHydrangea · 27/01/2020 17:24

Any thoughts on best period knockers for a 10 year old? My dd is likely to start her periods any day so these seem like a great idea for peace of mind but obviously adult sizes will be a bit big.

cz123 · 27/01/2020 17:27

@ClientListQueen why can't you feel sexy? You feel at your worst for those couple of days. I at least want to be feeling sexy for myself rather than icky in a pair of granny panties!
