How many pairs of socks do you and your household have?

peoplepleaser1 · 27/01/2020 09:27

I seem to have a washing basket that is permanently full of unpaired socks.

I periodically pair some but rarely get half way down the basket.

It's just occurred to me that maybe it would be easier if we just had less socks. Having said that it feels wrong to throw things away....

Do most people have piles and piles of socks?

We have far too many, unsure of the number though.
last week I threw away a full plastic tub of odd socks.
I told the whole family to pair them or they went.
We now have no odd socks, for at least this week. Grin

Lweji · 27/01/2020 09:30

Yes, but each person wears 7 per week.
You may find it easier if each person has one colour and the same style of socks.
Or each one puts theirs in a laundry bag, so that they're not mixed all together in the wash.

Mrsjayy · 27/01/2020 09:30

We have 25 million odd socks i have learned to ignore them Grin

14 zillion but they're all either too small, have holes in them or have lost their partner. Even on the rare occasion that the washing basket is empty, I still end up hunting for a decent, matching pair of socks.

Ha so glad it's not just me.

Despite having a zillion socks I often can't find a pair, especially for DS on school days (he's supposed to wear plain black).

I'd like to cull them because they get in the way......

My dcs regularly have none, apparently, even though I seem to buy them fairly regularly Hmm

SnugglySnerd · 27/01/2020 09:40

Loads especially if you include "speciality socks" e.g. for walking boots, trainer liners etc.
However I don't find it much of a job to pair them. I hang them up to dry in pairs and it's done. They are all patterned/coloured though which helps.

Whathappenedtothelego · 27/01/2020 09:40

We have loads.
I wash similar colours together, and hang them in pairs on the airer.
When it comes to putting away, everyone gets all their clothes given to them in a basket, odd socks included, to put away. So you might find the other of the pair already in the drawer. Or the lone sock will wait in the drawer for it's pair, it'll turn up eventually.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 27/01/2020 09:40

Yes it is completely disgusting to throw old socks into landfill! Every council in the country has fabric recycling facilities. You can even put them in a separate bag marked rags and give them to the charity shop who will make a little money from them.

Rough guestimate - I would say we have about 20 pairs of socks each in our house.

FairyBatman · 27/01/2020 09:41

We have eleventy billion socks. A cull is coming....

Bluerussian · 27/01/2020 09:43

Haven't a clue, loads of odd ones.

BertieBotts · 27/01/2020 09:45

I have never counted.

I have an odd sock drawer for all the odd ones and they find their pair eventually. Or they don't and I throw them away.

One "life hack" to deal with this is to throw away all of your socks (recycle or whatever) and buy everyone about 15 pairs in a plain colour, different colour for each person. So every single sock matches and you have no more odd ones. As they start getting holey/faded/outgrown, throw the lot out and replace with another job lot.

I don't do this because I am a saddo who enjoys coloured, patterned socks and variety.

Lweji · 27/01/2020 09:47

BTW, odd socks are great to use as gloves for dusting.

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2020 09:50

No clue how many, life is to short to sit and count your socks.

However when we last moved house, the packers put my husband and is socks in together. They have never recovered. We now share a sock drawer, where all socks are shoved in unpaired, and we simply root through and find two that match,🤣

kjhkj · 27/01/2020 09:52

If you have holey socks which can't be repaired then there is a great little video on brut nature (environmental site) which shows you how to turn and old sock into a really effective dish scrubber. Its a fun activity for kids (involves weaving in and out of clothes pegs).

Lweji · 27/01/2020 09:52

It's just me and DS now, but there are still some grey ankle socks that I'm not quite sure who they belong to. Shock

SassenachWitch · 27/01/2020 09:52

We have 100 million, zillion or so it seems.

Half of those are odd 😒

Namelessinseattle · 27/01/2020 09:58

Your question is wrong... we have about 2 pairs each and 45 million odd pairs. That for reasons unknown to myself, I keep washing in the hope that one day they might find each other in the sitting heap.

Lweji · 27/01/2020 10:00

That is pretty cool.

TimeForAParty · 27/01/2020 10:37

We have loads. But....
DH has only black or grey of the same kind of sock so no pairing required. He just needs to pick up two of the same colour.
DS refuses to wear pairs so I buy him themed multipacks where each sock can more or less go with any other sock in the pack.

DD pairs her socks
I pair my socks
Our socks are obvious which ones go in a pair so doesn't take long.

ExpletiveDelighted · 27/01/2020 10:54

Probably at least 20 pairs each. I do most of the laundry and I don't pair them, just put them all in each person's pile so its up to them to pair them, deal with odd ones etc. We've never had an odd sock pile or bag, they stay in the owner's sock drawer.

Mrsjayy · 27/01/2020 11:18

I do a pairing every so often did one before christmas found a couple of pairs thatI assume was Dds who moved out over a year ago Blush

Lipperfromchipper · 27/01/2020 11:21

Tons!! They just take over!! Although I am very proud to say there are no odd socks in this house they all manage to stay paired!!!🙌
