If you were a teacher and you were meant to be accompanying a school trip (exchange) to Shanghai in 6 weeks, would you go?

They will be trying to discover if the insurance will reimburse the families before making any announcement.& the insurance will be hedging a response until the Govt/Acadamy make an announcement that this sort of trip are off.
I am guessing most of the parents will also have sent emails this w/e

EllieBellend · 27/01/2020 17:56

It will be cancelled. Big trade fair end Feb in Shanghai was cancelled today. Don't worry.

Schools can be really weird about this sort of thing.

I remember ds' school organised a trip to a European country last year (not for his year group). Leaving on March 29th. Which, as you may recall but wish to forget, was the original Brexit day and there was all sorts of talk about no flights if there was no deal. Of course, it was all ok, but who would choose that day to go?

In six weeks the situation will be much worse and far more widespread.

CountFosco · 28/01/2020 06:45

SIL lives in SE Asia (not China) and took an internal flight yesterday and everyone was wearing masks.

iMatter · 28/01/2020 06:50

I'd be surprised if most of the parents don't withdraw their kids from the trip.

I hope you get it sorted OP. I would absolutely say don't go, especially with a compromised immune system.

Good luck.

kjhkj · 28/01/2020 06:51

There are currently 35 reported cases in Shanghai. It won't go ahead.

sandybanana · 28/01/2020 06:51

Definitely not

kjhkj · 28/01/2020 06:52

Actually just updated 66 reported cases.

PurBal · 28/01/2020 06:59

Yes, I'd go. The virus wouldn't stop me personally.

NemophilistRebel · 28/01/2020 07:04

If one is unlucky and catches it then that it bought back into the Uk
Everyone o. That flight home is at riskeveryoen at their school who they come into contact with within the 2 week incubation period is at risk

They won’t even know they’ve got it until they are home and it’s spread

BettyMacDonald · 28/01/2020 07:04

No. Not a chance. I can’t believe it won’t be cancelled tbh

NemophilistRebel · 28/01/2020 07:05

The replication rate is huge in Wuhan alone the confirmed cases jumped from 100 at the point i went to be last night to over 4500 this morning

fitflopqueen · 28/01/2020 07:06

We are currently in Thailand on holiday, everywhere is sold out of hand sanitizers and face masks. My husband is due to go back to western China on Thursday for work, the city is already partially locked down with limited travel, he has cancelled his flight back and is being reimbursed by the airline even though no official notice from either China or U.K. his team due to go Out from Uk later this week has been postponed for ?? . He coming back home for now and very unlikely to return in the next 4-6 weeks. Feel very sorry for his Chinese employees as they will have limited resources if the virus continues to increase (numbers are likely to be much higherthan reported. And they still had a bloody crocodile BBQ for Chinese New Year at our Hotel at weekend!

You're mixing up your stats there.

100 reported deaths as of last night but there were circa 3000 reported cases. This morning there are 4474 reported cases (which is still a big jump). The replication rate is currently suspected to be about 3.8 (which is very high)

Apolloanddaphne · 28/01/2020 07:09

I am not someone who worries unnecessarily but I would not want to go on a trip to China right now. I think it is unlikely they will get this under control in 6 weeks and in fact it is more likely to have spread widely by then.

SallyWD · 28/01/2020 07:10

I'd follow advice from the Home Office

Peridot1 · 28/01/2020 07:30

I wouldn’t worry just yet. I think this week will bring more clarity from the WHO and the Foreign Office. Strongly suspect your trip will be cancelled and you won’t have to pull out.

Cam77 · 28/01/2020 07:34

Whatever the official number of diagnosed cases is, times that by about 100 and you’ll be far nearer the mark. I know for a fact that,at least in some areas, the number of diagnoses being recorded is being intentionally depressed. Bar some miraculous cure/drop off in the next couple of weeks, your trip isn’t going ahead. The vast majority of Chinese people would consider you borderline insane for even considering it yourself. Let alone with a group of kids.

Nousernameforme · 28/01/2020 07:42

I'm not currently worried about the virus but I still wouldn't willingly risk infection by going.

It does seem to have a high infection rate even if the virus itself is fairly mild I dont want it.

LizziesTwin · 28/01/2020 07:49

Hong Kong Disney Land is closed and it’s hard to buy face masks (one of DD’s friends is there, she’s a princess!).

Happyandglorious · 28/01/2020 07:51

Admittedly I am panic merchant. So no way I would go and I cant imagine many parents would want their kids to go either

Cam77 · 28/01/2020 07:51

The foreign office does not yet recommend not visiting Shanghai.

If that’s the case I find it astonishing. This morning the US CDC has updated its warning to encompass the whole of China. I guess the UK will now follow their lead. Shocked it’s taking this long to be honest but I guess it waited for the US to take the lead (surprise)

Casino218 · 28/01/2020 07:52

It will have spread to here by then so just follow home office advice.

Casino218 · 28/01/2020 07:53

It also seems to be adults that are getting the worst symptoms.
