Sore throat hell - help please!

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:17

As title says - I am demented with a sore throat. I have tried so many things - strepsils, tyrozets, spray from doctors, paracetamol, ibruprofen, tea, cold drinks, ice cream, honey...still so raw and painful I can’t sleep.

Any more tips??

Are you sure it’s not tonsillitis?

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:20

I seen the nurse yesterday who diagnosed Pharyngitis. Which I think is just a fancy word for sore throat??

Sainsbury's own version lemsip. Just try it.
I've had this for last 10 days. It's the only thing that helps.

You poor thing, my mother always made us gargle with warm saline (salty water) it is totally disgusting but I’ve always found it relieves that horrible rawness, hope you feel better soon . Couple of teaspoons of normal salt in warm water should do the trick.

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:22

Thank you - will try get some tomorrow.
I am, again, maxed out on paracetamol and ibuprofen for the day.

Difflam spray recommended by pharmacist, I was sceptical but it worked for me

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 24/01/2020 21:23

Are you still using the spray? I found that while it did numb for a little while, it was actually irritating my throat in the long term.

Co-codamol and ibuprofen taken together helps a lot.

How long have you had it?

Theworldisfullofgs · 24/01/2020 21:24

Lots of hot drinks. Alternative paracetamol and ibuprofen every two hours.

Have you got a temperature? How long have you had it? If its viral tonsillitis it will start to get better soon. If not ho back to the doctor.

Theworldisfullofgs · 24/01/2020 21:25

Hot squash.

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:25

I’m not sure if I maybe have the generic brand of that, @Aurorie11. Unfortunately not touching the pain, and I have been very liberal with it!

I had this recently and had to brace myself before swallowing. Its different to tonsillitis which is a different kind of awful. I used tyrozets which had anaesthetic in and difflam spray.

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:26

It’s been this painful since Wednesday night. Before that just a heavy cold with the usual sore throat.

No temp. Cough developed over night/today. Very mucousy which probably causing the cough.

Try gargling with soluble aspirin, then swallowing it. Aspirin is an anti inflammatory so you can't take it with Ibuprofen but you can take it with paracetamol. ( Dissolve 2 300mg tablets and gargle straightaway)

fedup21 · 24/01/2020 21:27

Difflam is very good.

PlayerOneNotReady · 24/01/2020 21:27

I was buying something for a sore throat many years ago and the pharmacist recommended gargling some water with just a few drops of tea-tree oil. I tried it and by gum! does it feel like it's working straight away. I always use this now when I feel a sore throat coming (have been prone to them over the years) and it really helps both in the early stages and when suffering like you are now.

BlackBlueBell · 24/01/2020 21:27

Buttercup syrup, gargle saltwater and also try drinking a really strongly made up cordial, I find orange works best.

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:29

The spray is benzydamine, which is difflam I’m sure.

Am I doing it wrong? It’s not even bringing the slightest relief.

Ibropufen too, to reduce the swelling

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:30

Been doing the brufen/paracetamol every 2 hours. The brufen does seem to be the best at taking the edge off slightly but I’m maxing our by not much after tea time every day.

Don't know where you are OP but many pharmacies can now do swipe tests for antibacterial infections. Def worth doing one of someone near you offers- means if it's nasty which is v possible (been swabbed by pharmacist dad!) that if it's jit they give great advice even tho viral tonsillitis awful or can prescribe if not

AwdBovril · 24/01/2020 21:32

Like PPs, I gargle with soluble aspirin (vile but effective). Tyrozets are very helpful & not disgusting. Aside from that, I basically suck throat sweets & sip cool water all day, just to try to keep it lubricated.

Hope you feel better soon.

lisag1969 · 24/01/2020 21:48

Maybe gargle with some soluble tablets. So the little grains of tablets in the water stick to your throat. X

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 21:49

Just done the salt water - gross!

Will try get some soluble tablets tomorrow too.

Honestly Id go and see the dr tm, I get tonsillitis and it’s agony. I always end up on penicillin for 10 days.

Does your drs do an emergency clinic on Saturday mornings?.

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 22:05

Unfortunately not. I do have a few white spots but nurse adamant viral.
