Sore throat hell - help please!

As title says - I am demented with a sore throat. I have tried so many things - strepsils, tyrozets, spray from doctors, paracetamol, ibruprofen, tea, cold drinks, ice cream, honey...still so raw and painful I can’t sleep.

Any more tips??

Lifelong tonsillitis and Quinsy sufferer here. Until or unless you need and get antibiotics then without a shadow of doubt Difflam - gargle and spray and Strefen lozenges are the best non prescription help there is. At very early stages salt gargle/honey and lemon etc are fine but there comes a point they are too painful.
Good luck op.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/01/2020 22:11

I usually explain the problem and they give me the it’s usually viral speech. Then they look and prescribe antibiotics. Did yours get better, then worse?.

You need the walk in clinic or local out of hours service.

Have you got anyone to take you?.

Propolis spray from a health food shop. It’s something to do with bees.
Game changer.

The nurse did look in my throat and said viral.

I really must be doing something wrong with the spray!

TCP gargle.

HeronLanyon · 24/01/2020 22:18

Try the difflam gargle and keep it washing around for a bit. The spray can literally be a bit hit and miss.

ThePlantsitter · 24/01/2020 22:19

Ibuprofen meltlets gave some relief when I had something similar. You can hold them in the back of your throat while they melt.

butwhateverfor · 24/01/2020 22:19

Get a second opinion. Sounds like strep throat.

RoomR0613 · 24/01/2020 22:23

I had this recently and the only thing that touched it was co-codamol.

I've suffered with sore throats my entire life but this was another level. I think I had it 4 days in total on a cocktail of paracetamol, ibuprofen, tyrozets, throat spray, lozenges until I went and actually begged a pharmacist for something stronger.

AwdBovril · 24/01/2020 22:23

I must say, when I can afford them I get the Bee Health propolis lozenges for general sore throats. They work out much more expensive that (for example) lockets etc but they are extremely soothing.

Namaste6 · 24/01/2020 22:23

I had quinsy a few years ago. Could barely drive myself to the out of hours doc. Had to spit into a cup, too painful to swallow. If you have white spots, likely it's strep.

Itsashame · 24/01/2020 22:24

Keep up the salt water gargling it really does help

HeronLanyon · 24/01/2020 22:24

Oh and ice chips to lubricate and cool. Good if it’s too painful to swallow anything at all. Strefen are anaesthetic and antiseptic - behind counter but no prescription.

HeronLanyon · 24/01/2020 22:26

My quinsy once had to be cut under local anaesthetic in a and e cubicle as I could breathe very well. That was not pretty. Quinsy is truly awful. So too are all bad throat things. You have our support op. It will get better.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/01/2020 22:26

But how can they tell with no swab for culture & sensitivity?.

HeronLanyon · 24/01/2020 22:26

‘Could not breathe very well’ that should have read.

userxx · 24/01/2020 22:27

It's hideous, I had it for a week and was losing my shit. Red wine and ibuprofen worked for me 🍷

scousadelic · 24/01/2020 22:31

Stop using all throat sprays, etc, Suck ice pops or lolly ices and sip cold water in-between
Take a Vit C and Zinc effervescent tablet once or even twice daily till better

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 22:31

She just said because it mostly was just red and inflamed would be viral. My little girl had a viral infection last week, and my dh, but their symptoms very different to mine. They had the usual fever/sweats etc. I’ve had none of that, just headaches, runny/blocked nose and this bastarding sore throat.

I think you should see the doctor.

NauseousNancy · 24/01/2020 22:37

Sorry to everyone else who had felt like this - so horrible! Only option now would be 111, and a possible out of hours appointment. Feels wasteful when I’ve been told there’s nothing they can do.

OP posts:
3luckystars · 24/01/2020 22:39

By a nurse.

It's not wasteful. Get to a doctor, your throat sounds infected. There IS something they can do. You have someone relying on you and need to get better, not worse. Good luck.

BellesandWhistles223 · 24/01/2020 22:46

I find dequadin lozenges really good when other lozenges like strepsils just aren’t working.
Hope it gets better soon!

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/01/2020 22:46

Last time I had it I had no fever, no headache etc just a throat so sore swallowing felt like torture.

Don’t be put off, normal otc painkillers aren’t touching it so somethings going on.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/01/2020 08:39

How are you feeling now?.
