Looking to upgrade to a new contract phone. Not bothered about having the latest models but some of the contracts are £50+. I pay about £18 atm. Is there a better way to not end up paying a fortune. Buy a handset and get sim only contract?

I bought an iPhone 7 outright when they came out for about £650. I’ve been sim only for years. Currently £10 a month for 8gb data with Sky but I’ve been on 3 and O2 before with similar costs. I usually keep a handset til it dies so this works well for me.

okiedokieme · 22/01/2020 18:29

I own outright, I pay £10 a month for unlimited calls and texts plus 6gb sim only

Same but 10gb

WooMaWang · 22/01/2020 18:32

I also own the handset and pay £10 a month.

TheCanyon · 22/01/2020 18:34

£7.50 a month with Tesco

Chasingsquirrels · 22/01/2020 18:35

I buy outright and don't need the latest phone.

I'm with ID Mobile and pay £5pm for 1.5gb data (but with a months rollover and I don't use it all so now start each month with 3gb) and enough 5000 texts and 250 minutes.
All of which are more than enough for my needs - Wi-Fi at home, mobile data at work and out and about.
My 17yo and 13yo are on the same deal, although 17yo gets 2gb plus rollover and 13yo gets 1gb plus rollover as the data offering had decreased as we each signed up.
They also never go over.

I buy my phone outright and then do £6 a month from giffgaff for 500mb data, 300 mins, 500 texts.

exexpat · 22/01/2020 18:39

I also buy the phone outright then go for 30-day rolling sim-only contracts.

My current phone is a Motorola android model which cost me £179 (does everything I need, takes decent pics, very good battery life), and I pay about £9 a month for 3GB of mobile data (usually end up rolling it over), unlimited texts, and more call minutes than I would ever use.

xyzandabc · 22/01/2020 18:43

I buy the phone outright. The last 3 have all been Motorola G series around £120-£150.

Was on Giffgaff monthly £10 bundle which had 500 minutes, 3Gb data and unlimited.

Now on a family plan with BT, 4 of us all with Motorola phones owned outright and it's £10 each a month for 12Gb data, and more calls and texts than I would ever use

Gwilt160981 · 22/01/2020 18:49

I'm on contract I pay about £11 a month with iDmobile. Due for upgrade in march and got me eye on a Nokia 2.2. I'm not one for these top of the range phones. As long as it does as it's told even though Google Voice keeps interrupting 🙄 I'm happy 😆

WreckTangled · 22/01/2020 18:49

£32/month iPhone XR. Unlimited data etc. I can't afford to buy a phone outright, my previous one died, and I need a decent one because I'm diabetic and use it for glucose levels ( it then sends them to my Fitbit so I can always see them).

PrimeYesterday · 22/01/2020 18:52

Oh wow, all these are so cheap. I kept my last phone for 5 years and was on a sim only for £15 a month for last few years. Now with iPhone 11 on £45 for 20Gb

Happygirl79 · 22/01/2020 18:55

I bought my phone new for £175
Sim only at £9 a month with virgin
Used to pay £35 monthly for a rubbish mobile on contract
Never again

Parky04 · 22/01/2020 18:58

Phone bought for £150 and I pay £8 per month.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/01/2020 19:01

iPhone 10 £100 a month for 2 years, unlimited everything

Chanel05 · 22/01/2020 19:02

I've got an iPhone 6s that I bought outright in August and I pay £9 per month for unlimited texts, minutes and 12GB data.

URPS · 22/01/2020 19:03

I buy my phones (and DC) then have a sim only contract each - £15 each for 41G and everything else unlimited.

OP get a refurbished phone and go sim only.

ItsARaveDave · 22/01/2020 19:06

I pay £36pm for a Google Pixel 3A(I think🤔) and get unlimited texts and minutes and 30G of data.

InvisibleToEveryone · 22/01/2020 19:08

I pay 20£ a month with handset, unlimited text, 5000 minutes (not needed really) and 100gb.

DC has just got a new handset and contract, 15£ a month, 3gb, unlimited text and something low for minutes. Can't remember what.

DivisionBelles · 22/01/2020 19:09

Bought my iPhone 6s refurbished from Giff Gaff and pay £12 a month for unlimited texts, unlimited minutes and 10gb data. Will upgrade my phone again in a couple of months and will do the same, buying a refurb iPhone, prob an 8, outright.

undercoveraessedai · 22/01/2020 19:14

£38 a month inc handset (p10 pro), unlimited texts and calls, 30gb data.

Coming to end of contract and can't decide whether to change to sim only or go for the upgrade 🙈

Toddlerteaplease · 22/01/2020 19:14

I bought an Xs Max on eBay for £1000. Sealed in box and have a £15 a month sim
Only contract.

BronteSisters · 22/01/2020 19:15

Pick which phone you want and do a comparison/price search. Places like Uswitch are best for it.

I currently pay £42pm for an iPhone 11 with 66GB data a month on EE but mobiles.co.uk could have got me a better deal had I taken a new contract with them on EE.

BronteSisters · 22/01/2020 19:20

DD has my 'old' iPhone 8 (crazy a 13yo having such a pricy mobile but she's such an amazing kid she deserves it) and EE offered a sim only plan for just £6pm with 6GB data with the ability for me to gift her as much of my data as I like a month.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 22/01/2020 19:23

I have the iPhone 11 for £33 a month. Unlimited text, minutes and 50gb data.
