My baby son was admitted to hospital last night with retraction

His sats, heart rate and overall self are fine, however he seems to be working hard to breathe and is now on CPAP after a night on optiflow

Any success stories as I’m so anxious and worked up.

RSV is nasty but 99% of children survive and recover. Those who don’t have pre-existing complex health problems which isn’t the case with your little one.
It’s good they’re not worried. Flowers

PrayingandHoping · 24/01/2020 14:13

The vent is meant to be doing all his breathing at this point don't worry. It's means he can just rest and fight the virus. They will reduce his sedation when he's ready and then he'll start taking some breathes for himself

He’s had an NG feed. Consultants not worried. More phlegm on his lungs than yesterday but not really deflated now. He’s on day 5 now

OP posts:
PrayingandHoping · 24/01/2020 20:44

The phlegm will come up a while, they will be looking for is to be less thick and a different colour

You've got to say 5.... he should be at his worst now and now be on the mend 😊🤞

clairindespair · 25/01/2020 02:53

His sats are sitting nicely at 97 on 40%. He may have to have some blood as his red blood cells are abit low but the nurse said that’s normal, she’s said he’s improving so I’m more settled. I went home last night so just rang the ward

My ds has RSV at 10 weeks. It was awful. They told me he might have permanent lung scarring and asthma.
He’s just turned 18, is a lifeguard, and is currently exploring Japan with his mate. No impact at all.
Gentle hugs to you, take heart. It’s grim, but soon he’ll be home and you can get on with the rest of his long, healthy life.

Im so sorry you going through this, i read you previous thread and i want to tell you, you doing amazing ❤️ Its really scary when you see your child struggle breathing. My DS1 was taken by ambulance when i took him to the GP because I noticed he has hard time breathing. Once the GP called the ambulance they been there within 5 minutes and i will never forget his feet looked blue.. i was so scared, we had blue lights too 😔
In tge end for us it was horrible reflux burning him. And we spent 4 days in hospital. Its sound a lot but he was crying a lot until his medicine kicked in.
Its so bad to see your little one in pain and any kind of danger. I almost lost my mind when in hospital. It was so hard. But now a big strong boy 🙂 im here for you and having a pray for you and your baby everything will be fine ❤️

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 25/01/2020 11:41

How are you both today?

clairindespair · 25/01/2020 11:55

Nurses have said he’s doing well. He’s in a BESS research group as well so he got a free teddy

My brother was admitted with bronchiloitis in 1972, he had spent a month in neonatal from being born premature, was discharged on the tuesday & by Saturday night was in the Children's Hospital due to breathing problems. He was kept in for a week before being sent home. He only weighed 4lb when he was born on 17 March & by his christening in July weighed 21lb. He is nearly 48 now, 6 foot 5 tall & a dad to twins. Babies go downhill fast but also recover just as fast, treatment will be very much improved from what they were when my brother was born.

clairindespair · 25/01/2020 12:00

He’s tolerating his feeds well and he’s doing really well they’ve said, nice and settled

clairindespair · 25/01/2020 13:33

I don’t even know what doing well means

Sounds like you should be home soon fingers crossed. Does he have his own room in hospital or are you in a ward?

MummyOfBoyAndGirl · 25/01/2020 16:03

Great that sounds positive. How are you feeling in yourself? Are you managing sleep and regular food?

TopBitchoftheWitches · 25/01/2020 16:19

My DD had this at 2weeks old. She was 5 weeks premature.
She spent a week in hospital and is a healthy 16 yr old now.

Your baby is in the best place and sending lots of love to you both Flowers

clairindespair · 25/01/2020 21:55

He’s off midazolam now and doing some breaths on his own :) they’ve said he’s getting better

NaviSprite · 26/01/2020 11:50

Excellent news, I hope he’s past the worst of it now and continues improvement quickly - all the best and hope you’re coping well x

sleepyinsussex · 26/01/2020 12:19

Wonderful news. I hope he recovers quickly now.

Mumbassa · 26/01/2020 15:04

I’m so glad he’s getting better

clairindespair · 26/01/2020 16:05

Thank you, he’s doing really well his tube is loose but they’re only taping it as they can’t see him being on it much longer, chest is clear too. He does breaths on his own when he isn’t as sedated c

clairindespair · 26/01/2020 17:06

All they’ve seen so far is improvement and my little sausage could be off the vent as early as tomorrow if he carries on

OP posts:
oatmilk4breakfast · 26/01/2020 19:30

That’s brilliant news. Poor you, this has been going on a while. You’ll be glad to get him home for a proper cuddle very soon hopefully

clairindespair · 26/01/2020 21:12

They’re looking at extubating him within 72 hours if he carries on doing so well, all they’ve seen from him is improvement :)
