My baby son was admitted to hospital last night with retraction

His sats, heart rate and overall self are fine, however he seems to be working hard to breathe and is now on CPAP after a night on optiflow

Any success stories as I’m so anxious and worked up.

Hey OP when they cry (which is normal
And a great sign) then their O2 levels do drop - they would when we cry! You need a break away from the beeping noises and the intensity - is there anyone else to come and sit with baby? Have you spoken to anyone in the hospital about how you feel?

Please understand that baby will get better - it’s definitely been a bad season of viral infections. What you need is a break - baby will be fine

LilyPinkNoah · 22/01/2020 20:10

Do ask if baby has had confirmed RSV though - just so you know moving forward to look out for wheezes etc

Fouroutoffour · 22/01/2020 20:11

Haven't rtft, but DS was admitted with this at 13 months and they did say about them getting worse before they get better. Apparently this winter has been really bad for bronchiolitis! Wrt the nurses, you have to tell them you're worrying and what your concerns are exactly. Sorry, don't mean to put it on you, but IME they're usually very helpful and sympathetic, so maybe they don't realise how their words are coming across.

Babies can get better surprisingly quickly too- we were told on the Friday that we'd be in until Monday at the earliest, and we were out the following day! All the best!

My little one was 6 weeks and just discharged from nicu when he has rushed in with it. He weight 4lb 4 at the time. But he recovered well, no lasting damage and is now a happy 9 year old (he won’t be in a moment when I remove his switch) it’s horrible but he will be ok Flowers

BecauseReasons · 22/01/2020 20:17

Handhold for you, OP. They don't make promises lightly, so if they've promised that he'll be OK then he will be. It must be absolutely awful though- my sympathies.

Fouroutoffour · 22/01/2020 20:19

Please tell one of the nurses or doctors (and your mum) how you are feeling! My DS wasn't nearly as poorly as yours, but I was getting worried because none of the interventions seemed to be working. I mentioned cried to the nurse that I was scared he'd end up in hdu and she said everything was going to plan - it just looked bad to me as a worried mother and non-medical person. Please look after yourselfFlowers

BendyLikeBeckham · 22/01/2020 20:55

OP, I agree with others. Leave your mum there tonight and go home for some sleep. Everything will look brighter tomorrow without you feeling so utterly exhausted and overwhelmed, trust me.

mummy92 · 22/01/2020 20:57

My DD2 has this at 11days old it was horrific and she got worse before she got better I was beside myself but the doctors and nurses at our local hospital where amazing. Wishing your DS a speedy recovery

carly2803 · 22/01/2020 21:00

big hugs op its awful

mine was hospitalised, blue lighted, tubed, oxygen etc, its awful and you feel helpless

it does get worse before it gets better

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/01/2020 21:29

My baby grandson was in hospital 3 times with this - the first time he was sedated for several days and tube fed. He was about 4 months then, but there was a tiny baby who’d been premature, just a few weeks old, in the next cot. They both recovered well.
Please try not to worry too much. They do usually grow out of the tendency by about 2 - my Gds never had it after about 18 months, and is now very robust. Many don’t get it more than once.
Wishing you and your baby all the best, and a quick recovery.

SecretWitch · 22/01/2020 22:12

@clairindespair, I’m so sorry this is happening to you and your little boy. You have been through some shit.

Please take care of yourself. Eat,drink and sleep whenever you can. Your son is where he needs to be.

Sending you hugs and positive thoughts

Hi all

We've had a good look behind the scenes and we have no reason to believe that the OP isn't genuine, so we're leaving it up for now. We can't vouch for anyone, so if you're not comfortable, please do avoid posting.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 23/01/2020 12:21

Hope he's improving Clair

I think you’ve misinterpreted this comment ”They’ve promised me he’ll be okay and won’t die”. I’m sure your baby will be ok but medics don’t say things like that. You need to step away and get some rest. Flowers

clairindespair · 23/01/2020 12:55

He’s much the same, his blood gases are still good but they’ve spoke to me about the possibility of ventilation as he’s getting so feisty and agitated he really tires himself out. When settled he’s okay. He’s on his front now.

Ah poor little boy. It's so scary when they are so ill and in hospital. He's in the right place and the doctors and nurses will do their very best. Hope you are feeling better yourself. You've been through the mill recently.

PennyRoyal · 23/01/2020 14:43

Hope you're both home soon. Thanks

Sleepthiefismyfavourite · 23/01/2020 15:56

Hopes he’s on the mend!

clairindespair · 23/01/2020 16:30

He’s having little wobbles when he’s unsettled so they’re discussing whether to ventilate him. I’m scared he will die. Positive stories please.

Massive handhold.

My daughter got blue lighted to hospital at 7 weeks old with Bronchiolitis, we had a 3 day hospital stay, briefly on a ventilator. Worst few days of my life.

She's now 18 months, gorgeous and funny and bright and you wouldn't even have known she was ever poorly.

One of our nurses told us Bronchiolitis is very common (although I'd never heard of it!) but looks and sounds SO much worse than it is. Please think positive thoughts Thanks

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/01/2020 16:51

My Gds was in intensive care twice with this. It was the best place for him - the care was brilliant.
He’s a full-of- beans 3 1/2 now, charging around like a human hurricane, talking non stop.
Please try not to worry too much - all too easy to say I know, but it really is so common - not that I knew that when Gds first had it, I’d never even heard of it.

Schuyler · 23/01/2020 17:01

Try not to panic, it’s only been 2 days. If he was critically unwell, he’d be in intensive care right now and his blood gases would consistently be bad. Take care.

Schuyler · 23/01/2020 17:02

Sorry, missed your last post. Ventilation will be for his comfort while he recovers from his virus. Flowers

PrayingandHoping · 23/01/2020 17:07

I wrote a long post further down the thread. My baby was on a ventilator last month and in intensive care. Don't panic. It's not as bad as it sounds. It's only so they can rest and fight the virus. They all take different lengths of time to recover, but they do
