Just saw a Facebook post where someone had been discussing how their 'self of steam' has taken a battering over the past few months
How do you tell them?????
What are your fave misused sayings

Facebook marketplace always have some good ones. "Chester draws" "interia doors"

ChipInTheSugar · 19/01/2020 07:39

Even our previous SENCO used to write 'rest bite". I guess they think it's a quick grab (bite) at some rest - it certainly feels like that if it's only a day's respite!

All of these have surely got to be down to people not seeing the word(s) in print? And not questioning how they're pronouncing it? Kind of linked to people mispronouncing words that they've only seen written down, like 'epitome' - I thought it was "epi-toom" for many years! And don't even ask me about 'paradigm' ... Blush

eaglejulesk · 19/01/2020 07:40

Often read that someone was "wrapped" instead of rapt

snappycamper · 19/01/2020 07:46

Just today I have seen on facebook a Chester draws and a West Island Terrier.

Racking my brains but can't work our what West Island terrier should be

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 19/01/2020 07:50

West Highland Terrier

Goatinthegarden · 19/01/2020 07:52

In Tiger (Flying Tiger of Copenhagen) they had notebooks and pens for sale. They were adorned with sequins.

They were labelled as ‘Sequence Notebook’ and ‘Sequence Pen’.

ForkHandlesplease · 19/01/2020 07:56

I know the alligator lol Smile

snappycamper · 19/01/2020 08:00

West highland terrier

Thanks! Clearly thinking too far outside the box

SegregateMumBev · 19/01/2020 08:01

Those Shit Sues definitely belong in a doggy dog world.

Frenchw1fe · 19/01/2020 08:22

An old lady once told me, so not written, that her friend had won a bottle of liver free milk. I think it took me another 10 minutes before I realised she meant Liebfraumilch!

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/01/2020 09:43

Hang on, what's wrong with "off his own back"?
It's not a phrase I use but it's one I'm familiar with and I can't see what's wrong?

Oh is it supposed to be bat?!

Yes, it’s bat.

ZoeandChandon · 19/01/2020 09:59

An older lady once talking to me about mammograms called them monograms 😆
and a friend waffling on apologised for going off on a tandem (going off at a tangent)

TeachesOfPeaches · 19/01/2020 10:03

Have seen 'working profess' instead of 'work in progress' a few times now.

TeachesOfPeaches · 19/01/2020 10:04

Meant to say 'working progress'

ioioitsoff · 19/01/2020 10:06

A person on FB had their bike knicked.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/01/2020 10:07

Rest bite - used to see it so often on a forum for carers of people with dementia. But there’s a certain logic to it - the poor things were desperate for a ‘bite’ of rest.

Best I saw on a selling site was a ‘chez lounge’ - it took me a moment to realise that s/he meant a chaise longue.

FiveShelties · 19/01/2020 10:08

I did a report about a 'stiff member', rather than staff member. Took a while to live that down.

TheMemoryLingers · 19/01/2020 10:10

I've seen 'reign it in' several times recently (rein), also 'state of mine' (mind).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/01/2020 10:14

Yes, IMO a lot of it must be down to people never having seen the words in print.

On the reverse side, my brother was a voracious reader when still very young and would often mispronounce words he’d understood from the context, but had never heard.

So we’d have e.g., ‘I know it was you, so you needn’t denny it!’, but our favourite was (The Rock Of) Gribble-ater, which we still say decades later.

ReginaGeorgeous · 19/01/2020 10:19

I keep seeing 'step foot' instead of 'set foot' e.g. "I've never step foot in there".

Lilopup · 19/01/2020 10:25

A guy I used to work with replied to emails with "Sincerely yours..." that tickled me Grin

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/01/2020 10:35

On the reverse side, my brother was a voracious reader when still very young and would often mispronounce words he’d understood from the context, but had never heard.

I once heard of a guy who had to give a presentation about something or other. In this presentation was the mention of various animals, including antelope. He’d only ever seen the word ‘antelope’ written down........his sister was called Penelope.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 19/01/2020 10:38

I've seen 'dury duty' this week.

highlandcoo · 19/01/2020 10:46

Yy to the reading long words as a child having never heard them spoken in real life.

I still think picturesque should be pronounced picture-skyoo.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 19/01/2020 10:53

Yes, the long words read as a child .... and using them in a sentence. I still remember the guffaws when I described something as "grot-ess-queue".
