Hi Mumsnet

MIL is adamant parents in other countries don't burp their babies for trapped wind. Is that true? Ta!

My mum was Irish and she burped all five of us Confused

TaxFool · 18/01/2020 18:28

Not true. My Spanish family in Spain burp their babies.

bluejayblue · 18/01/2020 18:29

Of course it is true! Babies in the UK have totally different internal organs than other babies.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/01/2020 18:29

Was taught to burp DD1 in the hospital in Germany

RibenaMonsoon · 18/01/2020 18:30

My MIL is South African and she's the best I've ever seen at burping. I call her "the baby burper".

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 18/01/2020 18:30

How did all the other babies evolve to not get wind? Confused

Hoik · 18/01/2020 18:31

American friends and Polish friends and the Armenian lady at playgroup all burp their babies.

HarrietThePi · 18/01/2020 18:31

I don't think that is true. I think it is done all over. I didn't routinely burp DD after every bf though.

turnedabout · 18/01/2020 18:34

See, I knew MIL was talking rubbish!
Thanks all, no more posts required to satisfy my curiosity and settle the argument

Nope. Scandinavians burp babies.

BertsFriend · 18/01/2020 18:36

Two American women I know both burped their babies.

cakeandchampagne · 18/01/2020 18:38

It would be appropriate for your MIL to challenge how you burp the baby, rather than the burping itself. Smile

SuperDuperJezebel · 18/01/2020 18:40

Kiwi here... We burp babies!

randominternetperson · 18/01/2020 18:42

I read something about there being fewer babies referred for reflux meds in Germany, the theory being they burp their babies more thoroughly. Go figure...

Topseyt · 18/01/2020 18:43

Just tell your MIL she is talking bollocks. Grin

It is true. She is.

mbosnz · 18/01/2020 18:43

Another kiwi - the only thing FIL was any bloody use for was his unparalleled baby burping skills.

Aussie family and friends also burped their babies.

pooboobsleeprepeat · 18/01/2020 18:49

Breastfeeding is a lot less common here than other countries and it’s not as important to burp bf babies because they don’t swallow air.

kateclarke · 18/01/2020 18:53

I had mine here in the UK and never burped her ever.

PicsInRed · 18/01/2020 18:55

🤣

Of course.

The UK has the only competent mothers. Natch.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/01/2020 18:56

I BF and didn't need to burp my two, I'm assuming in some countries BF rates are higher and therefore it's less common?

qazxc · 18/01/2020 18:57

French burp their babies too.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/01/2020 18:58

German here and and of course you burp them (Bäuerchen machen - it's called)

TheSheepofWallSt · 18/01/2020 18:59

I don’t think that’s true. Burping breast fed babies is apparently less necessary... to be honest I tried to wind DS but it was impossible. He looked like a bloated little frog until he had his tongue tie fixed and I found Infacol...

ChanklyBore · 18/01/2020 19:00

English and have never burped a baby.

Troels · 18/01/2020 19:00

Americans here, yes we all burp babies.
