MIL says the UK is the only country where people burp babies - is that true?

Hi Mumsnet

MIL is adamant parents in other countries don't burp their babies for trapped wind. Is that true? Ta!

Maybe she's confusing it with the belief that babies outside of the western world don't get colic??

Not true!

Ffs at the smug breastfeeders

How is it smug to describe the way your child was fed? It makes sense that breastfed babies are less likely to be swallowing air. Mine generally fell asleep every time they fed in those early months so I never tried to wind them and they didn’t suffer for it.

My breastfed babies definitely needed winding, but then I had a sort of firehose letdown so the first few minutes were always quite gulpy.

Different babies, different mums. Different. Who knew?

I'm Italian and never burped my breastfed baby. Not sure what they do in Italy but I think I was told the no burping thing by my hv or mw.

Lots of bf babies need burping - particularly if mum has a very fast letdown and or oversupply. Caused myself a few issues with my first by reading the bf babies don’t get wind thing...
