I never expect much of webchats, so I wasn't going to bother with this one anyway. I'm sorry but not surprised to hear that it's going to be even more of a stage-managed self-promotion/PR exercise than normal. Add my voice to those who would have liked MN to let all questions stand and group them together if necessary.
However, as a result of this thread, I've now also read this: www.pinknews.co.uk/2020/01/17/jess-phillips-labour-leadership-transgender-rights-juno-dawson-pinknews-interview/ Pink News interview with Jess Phillips. The interviewer is Juno Dawson. I'm very, very disappointed.
Jess Phillips has pretty clearly nailed her colours to the mast here. She actively wants reform of the GRA to make it easier to get a GRC. She thinks the introduction of the GRA was great in principle but she doesn't understand the GRA requirements to live as the opposite sex:
I found that it was not fit for purpose in modern Britain at the time, because I don’t know how anyone could ever meet those tests or who, more importantly, gets to set the test. As somebody who has spent her life arguing against the idea of like, boys jobs and girls jobs, I just couldn’t understand the parameters. So, the recommendations to change how that process happened seemed deeply obvious.
I don't think it's fit for purpose either, I don't agree with gender stereotypes either, but I draw the opposite conclusion from all of this. My view is that it's impossible to change sex so what's the point of a GRC? Why aren't we trying to make it OK to dress, behave etc how you like, regardless of which sex you are?
But Jess seems to have thrown her lot in with those who would say gender identity is innate, brains come in at least three varieties (male, female, non-binary) and if you have the misfortune to have a brain/body mismatch
this is something that warrants medical treatment, just like any other medical condition. (Or not, in the case of the 80%+ of transwomen who don't seek surgery and who are also quite unlikely to take hormones.)
She appears to be an intelligent woman. She speaks cogently and convincingly about sex work and the Nordic model. How can she not see that believing in gendered souls is a deeply unscientific position which throws up all sorts of problems right across society?
