How much money do you keep in the house?

Belindabelle · 13/01/2020 21:23

I received some money for Christmas in cash. I put in my bedside drawer and it is still there. Just wondering if I should keep it in a safe place in the house as I never need to go to the bank and I probably won’t spend it for a while. I mainly shop online now anyway.

I know my Mil has a small safe with a few hundred pounds in it and one of my Great Aunts always had a supply of dollars and euros in case she needed to leave the country quickly!

Just wondering what other people do.

£1000, in a small safe with €500, spare keys, passports and building society book. My income halved last year (divorce) but my outgoings stayed more or less the same (apart from food).

It just makes me feel happier knowing that if I got a big bill one month I could take cash out of my safe without touching my savings or if I booked a weekend away somewhere I could take a few euros.

Probably illogical but it works for me.

brightbluesky · 13/01/2020 21:29

Couple of hundred usually, I draw it out monthly and treat is as a float of sorts, my husband never has cash it drives me insane! I like to have cash in case of the window cleaner showing up, paying for take always, inpromtu taxi, or money for husband going to the pub 🙄

LtGreggs · 13/01/2020 21:30

I don't particularly keep any in the house, but usually have between £20 and £100 in my wallet, and think DH probably has about the same.

Woeisme99 · 13/01/2020 21:39

I'm useless and never have cash, it's always a scrabble for ballet class, but that's all is trugglw with, we're almost a cashless society IMO.
There's probably £50 or so in the dcs money boxes should I ever have an emergency and need a little bit.
I do however have a squirrel like tendanncy to save money in various accounts, should I die soon it'll probably be lost forever Confused

EmmiJay · 13/01/2020 21:41

Same as above a few hundred hidden away in a drawer along with a pack of Vogue menthols (which are practically obsolete) lol.

Dazedandconfused10 · 13/01/2020 21:43

I have no idea. I have various change pots. I should sort it out really

20viona · 13/01/2020 21:44

Maybe about £10 😂 I never ever have cash.

JoJoSM2 · 13/01/2020 21:45

I always have a bit as I keep cash for the cleaner, babysitter, gardener and window cleaner. DH used to have a tutor too. I pay it out in larger chunks out of the bank and keep at home.

AdoraBell · 13/01/2020 21:46

I have a fiver in my bag and about £1.80 in a pair of jeans.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/01/2020 21:47

In purses, wallets and bags, likely under a fiver. We have a silver change pot. Maybe there's about a tenner in there. There's a teramundi pot with new pound coins in, maybe 50?

I'm always scrabbling for dinner money. Wish The school had online payment.

Usernamealreadyexists · 13/01/2020 21:49

A few pence here and there, a few quids worth of foreign currency. Cash just seems like a burden now every small thing can be paid with card/phone.

MrsAmaretto · 13/01/2020 21:49

About £20 in pound coins for the kids youth club dues. Oh and the kids piggy banks.

I should probably keep money somewhere.

Hassled · 13/01/2020 21:51

Whatever's in my purse, which is seldom more than £20, and the Change Pot in the bedroom, which is mostly full of coppers. Burglars looking for cash would be bitterly disappointed.

Chewbecca · 13/01/2020 21:52

Virtually nothing, no stashes.

A pot of £1s for bus money which regularly runs out.

Old pots of coppers.

Contents of my purse which can be from £0-£40. I rarely use cash.

AuntieMarys · 13/01/2020 21:53

I usually have up to £100 in my purse. We have a huge jar full of 20ps...probably about £900 in there.

DramaAlpaca · 13/01/2020 21:53

DH & I like to have some cash on hand for emergencies so we keep some in a little safe. I've got a few hundred euro of my own stuffed at the back of my knicker drawer too Grin

ParkheadParadise · 13/01/2020 21:56

Have £2000 in the safe, also € in there.

Have a dish in the kitchen with about £30 in £ coins that I have collected from DH emptying his pockets.

I always keep £10 in several handbags for emergencies, my mum told me to do this year's ago.

Elbeagle · 13/01/2020 21:58

Probably about £3 in coppers! Rarely use cash, I even pay the window cleaner online.

RhymingRabbit3 · 13/01/2020 21:59

I get paid in cash for a few hours work per week so usually have about £50 in a drawer

Northernsoullover · 13/01/2020 22:01

I added it up only yesterday. I have around 450 pounds. My £2 collection, my money drawer has money in from Facebook sales and I have some cash from my childrens father (child support is rather ad hoc Hmm).
I know I should move it but I've had a tough couple of years and only finished paying off a considerable amount of debt last year. I'm just terrified of not having money available. This is stupid as I have cash in the bank too. I just find it comforting.
I wouldn't feel comfortable if I got burgled.

Namethecat · 13/01/2020 22:01

Whatever is in my purse - usually less than £20 .

okiedokieme · 13/01/2020 22:07

Depends if the cleaner is due, often nothing

georgialondon · 13/01/2020 22:11

About £100 in case of emergency . But my. Partner keeps about £5-6k in his underwear draw! Neither of us have ever mentioned that though.

PH30B3 · 14/01/2020 08:09

I have around £70 in my handbag I don't keep it all in my purse.
Probably £20 or so dotted around the house from taking it out of pockets etc.
Few hundred $ few hundred € and various other currencies from trips.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/01/2020 08:12

Currently got about £50 in a jar.
