How much money do you keep in the house?

Belindabelle · 13/01/2020 21:23

I received some money for Christmas in cash. I put in my bedside drawer and it is still there. Just wondering if I should keep it in a safe place in the house as I never need to go to the bank and I probably won’t spend it for a while. I mainly shop online now anyway.

I know my Mil has a small safe with a few hundred pounds in it and one of my Great Aunts always had a supply of dollars and euros in case she needed to leave the country quickly!

Just wondering what other people do.

Why so much?

BusterGonad · 14/01/2020 14:33

My way of life is the complete opposite to most on here, cash is king for me, all our (family) money is now cash. I'm not in the UK. There's been times where my handbag has literally had a few months salary in it!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/01/2020 14:45

Don't you worry about theft/loss/ fire?

BusterGonad · 14/01/2020 16:53

Me? It's safer in my house than the banks, when I'm carrying my cash I only worry if I leave my bag anywhere as in, if I go to pay the bar bill I'll make sure my husband watches my bag. Also when I have all my money on me I'm with my husband, who is quite a beefy man so I'm pretty sure anyone looking for an easy target won't pick him. Fire, well that'll be unlucky but like I say safer to risk a fire than the bank, theif at home would be rare due to my condo having guards, a lift you need a key card for and I can also pad lock rails outside my door too.

DelightfulBox · 14/01/2020 16:59

I don’t worry about theft/loss/fire. My insurance policy covers £1000 cash. It’s in a safe which is bolted to a solid floor.

If my house burns down I will have far more to worry about than a bit of cash.

Orangecake123 · 14/01/2020 17:02

I have £178 in my "secret place" a teddy bear with a zip.

A sweet tube with coins- maybe £5.

AdoptedBumpkin · 14/01/2020 17:21

Are you planning some burglaries? Wink

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 14/01/2020 17:24

A relation of mine had thousands stolen from her house,in excess of £15k and this was years and years ago so worth more then. They never found out who took it.

I just wondered why anyone would keep such large amounts in cash.

BusterGonad · 14/01/2020 17:28

I have no choice but I do send it home as and when I can. Western Union is a wonderful thing! 😂

BusterGonad · 14/01/2020 17:30

Just to say I'd never leave huge amounts of cash at home in the UK, or walk around with it in my handbag. Most of the countries I visit and the one I live in is very safe in terms of personal safety.

lisag1969 · 14/01/2020 21:33

No more than £1000. Then each 000. I build up after that put it in bank. X

BreconBeBuggered · 14/01/2020 21:48

Are some of you Phil Mitchell in EastEnders?
Me, I have around £20 in my purse and probably about a tenner in my loose change box, which I might well be taking to the supermarket change machine to exchange for a shopping voucher. January innit.

RozHuntleysStump · 14/01/2020 22:37

About 1000

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/01/2020 23:05

I have 500 euros leftover from last year's holiday as it was AI and we didn't spend as much as I thought we would.
I collect my £2 coins and have £50 of them.
And I take out £100-200 each payday as 'petty cash' to avoid just using the card all the time and losing track of what I buy. I aim to let it build up as savings but often use all of it.

ByeMF · 14/01/2020 23:15

I have various change pots plus the Xmas savings pot. Then £400 just in case.

When I was financially secure I never kept a stash of cash. Now I'm broke I always have cash and save whatever change I can. I refuse to have debts so this way if anything unexpected happens I have a bit of a safety net.

BusterGonad · 15/01/2020 00:02

Brecon I have zilch, guttering needs doing, boiler dead. I'm as skint as can be! I won't have any spare cash until bloody May.

SpoonBlender · 15/01/2020 00:17

The coin jar plus whatever's in our combined purses and wallets. £35 for the cleaner on her day. And leftover holiday money that's too small to change back. We have a cashpoint within five minutes walk so no need to have cash in the house at all.

torthecatlady · 15/01/2020 00:41

Me - £15 in my purse (usually nothing)
Dh - £100 (monthly transport costs for work £25/week bus ticket)

Our current accounts are pretty bare at the moment, but we have managed to save a fair amount over the last year using the money pots.

1st pot is just mine (few hundred). Although I haven't added to it for a while as any change I have goes in the family pots and any spare money from wages goes into premium bonds.

2nd pot for loose change and money from selling stuff we no longer need. A few hundred.

3rd is again loose change - £100 ish.

4th is just for £2 coins and has about £10. GrinBlush

Pots 2&3 will be opened soon though to pay some bills. Then we will start a new one.

This thread has also reminded me that I need to keep £40 or so in cash in the house for taxis. I've had a few a&e trips recently and as DH doesn't drive have needed to take taxis. I will probably keep it in the medicine box.

It's funny, I never thought of myself as stashing money but I guess I sort of have (albeit in change).

zoobincan · 15/01/2020 00:49

just wondered why anyone would keep such large amounts in cash.

I know a few older people who have stashed money due to being on pension credit. Thee amount of savings can affect your benefit so if they withdraw cash and stash some it keeps the bank accounts right for the DWP.

My dads sister died recently and she had 4 envelopes in the house with just over £1000 each in them. Marked out for her 4 kids. She had gradually been adding to it as she kept her account minimal for pension credit!

LuluJakey1 · 15/01/2020 01:00

I have £10.57 in my purse and DH says he has a £10 in his wallet. That would be typical. Rarely have much cash on us and don't 'keep' any at home.

aurynne · 15/01/2020 03:03

We have no cash at home.

I think I may have 60 cents in my bag, and my DH may have some $1 coins in the house and in the car. Neither of us carries any cash, we don't need it nowadays. Even the farmers' market stalls have EFTPOS machines these days.

Nanamilly · 15/01/2020 04:07

I won't say what we keep at home but I think Im in the same region as BusterGonad and what I have could get all of my children and grandchildren to safety in Europe should the need ever arise very suddenly.

In fact we all have emergency funds at home.

Kazzyhoward · 15/01/2020 08:23

Don't you worry about theft/loss/ fire?

No, I have insurance!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/01/2020 08:27

I always thought there was quite a low limit in the amount of cash that was covered by insurance, there always has been on our policies.
