.....we’re all agreed that we need to be pragmatic, cynical and hard headed in the choice of the next leader and deputy, yes?

So, who? Who has a chance of getting us into power in the foreseeable future? Starmer and Philips?

OP posts:
tinierclanger · 17/01/2020 08:15

Keir Starmer (the “doorstep choice”) and Rosena Allin Khan or Angela Rayner, not decided yet. RLB just too uncharismatic.

ShatnersWig · 17/01/2020 08:16

If you want Labour to stand any chance of winning the next election, you have to vote for the person the Tories would least want to head the Opposition.

That person is Keir Starmer.

If Long Bailey got in, you can kiss Labour goodbye for a generation.

CornishPorsche · 17/01/2020 08:23

Long Bailey is another Corbyn. Total car crash disaster.

I've also rejoined for the vote. Jess Philips is my favourite, however Starmer is an excellent option. I approved of most of his work at the DPP, and I like how he cuts through the crap to get to the point. But Jess also cuts through it!

All the women in the competition suffer from coverage and attitudes that are not an issue for men (this is a general problem for women in politics).

However I'm glad to see RLB finally being called out on womens rights as I've heard some of her more regressive comments too many times for them to be a trivial issue. She also comes from a wing of the party which has historically been institutionally misogynist.

The reality is whilst the right may be equally misogynist they would hold their noses and vote for a three legged donkey if they thought it would win them the election. That is why they have had women leaders (pl) whilst Labour has failed to elect a single woman leader.

newlifenewme2020 · 17/01/2020 09:41

Starmer for me.

I curse the day we missed out on Andy burnam as a leader though. I truly believe he would have been prime minister

newlifenewme2020 · 17/01/2020 09:49

If Long Bailey gets in labour can kiss the next 10 years goodbye.
People need to vote with their heads and not their hearts this time. Another Corbyn would be a car crash.

MarieG10 · 17/01/2020 10:07

@theunknownknown

I blame her and her ilk for failing to support Corbyn when he was elected by the party. Their denigration of him then is partly to blame for the state we are in now.

Their denigration of him was totally correct and at least they had the integrity not to serve under him and not pander to his anti Semitic terrorist loving outlook. Frankly Labour members got what they deserved electing that despicable person

Their only shame should be they didn't speak out stronger and actually condemn his anti semitism as some others did like John Mann

Only only electable ones are Starmer and Phillips, possibly Nandy. The Conservatives will be praying for RBW and looks like they will have their prayers answered once the McCluskeys Unite manipulation-machine gets going to give him another leader that does as they are told.

MarieG10 · 17/01/2020 10:10

Oh and their anti semitism was continued wasn't it when they piled in extreme and disproportionate numbers of Momentum resources to Golders Green to make sure that Luciana Berger was defeated and the conservative was elected. Wonder why...oh forgot she was Jewish

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 17/01/2020 10:21

And momentum sending out their email asking members to vote - with only rlb as an option. Absolutely nuts.

RuffleCrow · 17/01/2020 10:55

Completely agree @ShatnersWig. Sadly, i think both those who want Labour to stay in opposition forever (mainly the righy wing press) and those who are so pig-headed they honestly think the country is going to leap at the chance to elect RLB (Momentum i'm looking in your direction) are conspiring to keep the most dignified and electable hopeful out of leadership. Neither side want to return to the hope that inspired the '97 election.

MeadowHay · 17/01/2020 11:06

I haven't 100 per cent decided. I'm between RLB and Starmer for leader but mostly towards Starmer. I reckon I will probs vote for him.

Deputy no idea... I like Butler, Burgon and Rayner. So not sure on that front.

Johnsonsfiat · 17/01/2020 11:12

When I hear RLB, I'm convinced by her message and philosophy. I think she's be more pragmatic and less rigid than Corbyn
The problem is her associations. They'll be a gift to the right wing and wing media and it will just add to the time without a Labour government. It's as if her backers don't realise that a Labour leader needs to have the potential to be elected as PM by the people.

RuffleCrow · 17/01/2020 11:16

Really? She just seems completely self-absorbed to me. She even looks like Corbyn, they have the same face shape and similar features. She could almost be his daughter.

Johnsonsfiat · 17/01/2020 11:24

I've never thought of her as self absorbed. She seems very self confident and either humourless (or so self controlled that she doesn't want to share it). She never seems to betray a flicker of nerves and is always ready with a reply.

PatienceVirtue · 17/01/2020 11:45

I'm in the ABRLB camp (anyone but...). Have rejoined post election and am dithering between Starmer, Phillips and Nandy.

I'm a bit fed up with it being all about winning back Northern voters. Yes it's important that their long ignored concerns are heard, but on the whole they are whiter and older (and consequently more Leaver) than the rest of the country. It might be that they're lost forever and the Labour Party needs to become the party of the young, mobile, outward looking, socially conscious etc etc wherever they live

The majority of Labour voters, even in constituencies where Leave won, are Remainers. I don't want this to be forgotten.

RuffleCrow · 17/01/2020 11:51

I spent too long in left-wing politics for her not to set alarm bells off @Johnsonsfiat. She's of the "It's all about the most vulnerable" = " it's all about the career" ilk. V similar to Corbyn in that respect too.

Johnsonsfiat · 17/01/2020 12:13

I was a bit bothered by her thing about being from the docklands and worrying about her dad. I'm not sure if in this day and age that sort of thing works as a vote winner.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 17/01/2020 12:36

I think there is an issue with the whole 'the most vulnerable' message - it doesn't allow for aspiration or pride. I think this is a real issue. Sounds more like charity marketing. Also i think you can argue pull everyone up and the economy will improve - better than bleeding heart liberal stuff that is easy to dismiss.

In 2015 i didn't want to vote for any female candidate who started their pitch 'as a mother...'. It was just irritating. I think not banging on about background is sensible.

Thymeout · 17/01/2020 12:39

RLB has an article in the Guardian. It sounds like pure Bennism. I think they've given up the idea of winning a GE. It's all about the People and a Movement. Like Extinction Rebellion? It'll be taking to the streets against the Westminster elite next.

DonPablo · 17/01/2020 12:53

Kings Heath Mafia? Shouty mates? You live where I do @SellFridges and if by mafia you mean someone who has lived here all their lives and loves where they live, then yeah, she is. HmmConfused

bellinisurge · 17/01/2020 12:57

"The majority of Labour voters, even in constituencies where Leave won, are Remainers. I don't want this to be forgotten."

Not many of the Northern (previously) Labour voters that I know.
