.....we’re all agreed that we need to be pragmatic, cynical and hard headed in the choice of the next leader and deputy, yes?

So, who? Who has a chance of getting us into power in the foreseeable future? Starmer and Philips?

everythingisginandroses · 15/01/2020 23:09

Starmer and Rayner for me.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/01/2020 23:13

RLB as leader and AR as deputy leader

My god the Tories will think all their dreams have come true. Neither are anywhere near competent enough even to be in the shadow cabinet never mind leading the party they will make JC and JMc look competent. They will be absolutely trashed in parliament, under questioning and interviews.

The trashing Labour got in the last election will be nothing compared to what they shall get if these two are at the helm

If it happens Labour will just have to split and allow Momentum to have the party let momentum run it into the ground and start another party

Neolara · 15/01/2020 23:16

Do you really think a split would happen under those circumstances?

The thought of no competent opposition for another 5 years is too awful to contemplate.

LoveMySituation · 15/01/2020 23:29

I think it's more than time for a woman, but as a pp said, you can't vote for someone because they are a woman. It's Keir Starmer and Dr Rosena Allin Khan for me. I like Lisa Nandy too, can't stand Jess Philips, her interviews are like a car crash you're compelled to watch..

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/01/2020 23:37

I think if Momentum keep their stranglehold on Labour a split would be the best thing

Why would you stay in a party that had no chance of winning an election and there is far more moderate Labour MP’s than left of party MP’s

If they want to run Labour into the ground maybe it’s time to let them because Labour will never win an election with a Momentum supporting leader

Gooseysgirl · 15/01/2020 23:41

I'm going to vote for Starmer/Rayner.

MoonlightBonnet · 16/01/2020 00:08

Momentum only have 40k members and the party have 550k. Momentum doesn’t have a stranglehold. The more extreme left have drifted away from momentum already.

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2020 09:12

“ can't stand Jess Philips, her interviews are like a car crash you're compelled to watch..”

While I don’t think she is the right person at this time, I just don’t see the “car crash” element. Can you link please?

OP posts:
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/01/2020 09:25

Momentum may only have in comparison a small number of members but they have been hugely influential within the Labour Party since Corbyn became leader

They have been successful at pushing the far left agenda (and encouraging left wing supporters to join the party) and campaigning to keep Labour to the far left which is a success for Momentum but failure for the party as it’s once again not only in opposition but with a hugely reduced amount of MP’s

To deny their influence is to ignore the direction and split within the party over the last four wasted years

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/01/2020 09:31

I think the car crash is an opinion

I don’t think JP always comes across well in interviews. I’ve said before I think she comes across as a populist MP and a crowd pleaser - seriously telling everyone that would listen how she has told other MP’s to fuck off are we back at school now

fascicle · 16/01/2020 09:34

whatsupnow
Lisa Nandy.

... she is doing a brilliant job answering questions on the Andrew Neil Show right now. (Andrew Neil being the interviewer our current PM was too frit to face before the last election.)

I thought she did a good job too. Spoke well and coherently and stood her ground (without, for example, eye rolling and obvious irritation shown by Corbyn in his Andrew Neil pre-election leaders interview). AN pretty irritating at times (repeating question she'd already addressed; wanting detail but cutting her off etc).

LoveMySituation · 16/01/2020 14:37

Enthusiasm said what I meant. She just comes across badly, and seems to get irritated by questions.

I did remember this interview though, in which l think she managed to get JRM to look likeable and reasonableGrin
hoorayforharoldlloyd · 16/01/2020 17:15

Lisa nandy

Anyone who will be voting, please watch her andrew neil interview, read her articles, see what people are saying about her. I genuinely think she can hold her own. Her focus on towns and buses and local communities is viable - and she is still pro movement and refugees. I think she ia the surprise candidate who can get respect across the board.

She was deemed too left for ed milliband, so don't assume she's on the right of labour.

She is the female candidate who take labour forward, i really think she's got something.

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2020 21:26

“I think the car crash is an opinion”

Of course it’s an opinion! But under the circumstances, surely an opinion like this needs some sort of supporting evidence?

OP posts:
BestIsWest · 16/01/2020 21:30

I’m not sure about Nandy given the comments on cracking down on Nationalism.

LoveMySituation · 16/01/2020 22:08

So everyone has to dissect their opinions on this thread now? Feel free to watch the video I posted earlier

AnnaFiveTowns · 16/01/2020 22:10

Starmer. I love Emily Thornberry, she's my personal favourite but I think Starmer will appeal to more people and is therefore more electable.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/01/2020 22:41

Bertrand look at her interviews some will think she comes across well others do not

I personally don’t want someone in a senior position who feels it’s ok to tell colleagues or others to to fuck off because they don’t agree with them and worse be proud and boast about it. What would she do at high level political negotiations as there will absolutely be times you don’t agree and at times it will be incredibly frustrating that’s the work

everythingisginandroses · 16/01/2020 22:44

I agree AnnaFiveTowns. By the way, I love your name. AB is my favourite author.

Tillygetsit · 17/01/2020 03:53

I love Jess Phillips. I have rejoined to vote for her. She is direct, honest, sensible and the perfect antidote to the 'career politician'. There is a slickness about Keir Starmer that I just can't warm to.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 17/01/2020 07:56

Bestiswest - agree she's expressed that v badly but don't think she actually meant head smashing catalonia. She has talked about socialism and nationalism finding a way to work together.

HeronLanyon · 17/01/2020 08:00

Would love a woman leader but of these I think kier Starmer is the ‘politic’ choice. However he’s my mp and a good one - would hate to lose some of his constituency energy if he becomes leader.

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 17/01/2020 08:04

Is keir starmer really the politic choice or are we just so used to seeing white men with a specific look?

I don't particularly dislike starmer but this makes me a bit sad.

sonicshoegazes · 17/01/2020 08:10

I'm voting Philips and Murray. Not sure whether she has much support though. I'm pushing for her within my CLP but we are overrun with Momentum supporters.

NotYourHun · 17/01/2020 08:11

I like Kier. I like Jess but unfortunately worry about her electability. I like Jeremy but he suffered the a terrible fate and don’t want to see it happen again.
