.....we’re all agreed that we need to be pragmatic, cynical and hard headed in the choice of the next leader and deputy, yes?

So, who? Who has a chance of getting us into power in the foreseeable future? Starmer and Philips?

OP posts:
SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 13/01/2020 10:27

Starmer. As much as I'd love to see a female leader I think pragmatically that he's more likely to win swinging old school voters in Tory heartlands.
Shame, as I like her and don't want to be so cynical and jaded. She could be a good deputy and then have her chance in the future.

leghairdontcare · 13/01/2020 10:32

Keir Starmer is my favourite for leader so far. Lisa Nandy and Jess Phillips have good ideas and both are great MPs but I don't feel like they are there, yet.

Deputy - Angela Raynor is going to walk it and she'll do a great job. She probably would be on track to win the leadership if she hadn't stepped aside for Rebecca Long Bailey.

BearSoFair · 13/01/2020 10:54

Keir Starmer for me too.

megletthesecond · 13/01/2020 10:55

Starmer and Phillips, probably.

I wasn't sure for a while but I've just found out that Dan Jarvis has ruled himself out so I'll go for those two.

lastqueenofscotland · 13/01/2020 11:00

Kier Starmer by a mile

SavageBeauty73 · 13/01/2020 11:02

Keir. He's my local MP and amazing.

Gilead · 13/01/2020 11:03

Starmer and Raynor or Phillips. Agree with Sandras would like a female leader but now is not the time.

bookworm14 · 13/01/2020 11:09

Starmer, with Phillips for deputy. I’m not thrilled by Starmer, but at this stage it isn’t about finding the perfect candidate, just the one best equipped to drag us back to the mainstream.

bookworm14 · 13/01/2020 11:10

Sorry, Rayner not Phillips for deputy!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/01/2020 11:25

Keir Starmer for leader

Deputy I would have liked Lisa Nandy

Angela Rayner is a poor choice she is awful in interviews when the questing gets difficult yet and only became education minister because Corbyn had so few people to choose from. Rather the party distance themselves completely from Corbyns inner circle

BertrandRussell · 13/01/2020 11:33

I think definitely Starmer, and probably Philips. I like Rayner- but if we’re being cynical and hard nosed she’s too vulnerable to Tory sledging,

OP posts:
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/01/2020 12:10

Yes she will be vulnerable to the Tories

I find it patronizing that there is this notion that there needs to be a working class nothern Leader or deputy leader to win back voters - many northern working class voters obviously didn’t see class as issue so why make it one the only necessity is that they are competent it would be good to have a women but again the right person is more important

AlunWynsKnee · 13/01/2020 12:23

I'm still torn about rejoining. I left over women's rights. I want to rejoin but I don't want to leave again if women still don't figure in the priorities of whoever does win.
Keir Starmer feels like the grown up in the room to me though.

NameChangeNugget · 13/01/2020 12:25

For me to rejoin, it’d need an Andy Burnham or David Miliband type leader.

None of the current candidates inspire much confidence. Starmer is the best though

palomapear · 13/01/2020 12:28

Keir Starmer the charmer

Damntheman · 13/01/2020 13:08

I'd really like a woman leader who isn't a Londoner to be honest. Keir doesn't do it for me, but I'm not sure who I would actually vote for. Need to do some soul searching.

Urkiddingright · 13/01/2020 14:30

DH and I are voting for Emily Thornberry and Dawn Butler.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/01/2020 14:34

I rejoined to vote for Starmer.

Not sure about Deputy yet, but not Rayner.

derxa · 13/01/2020 14:52

I'm not Labour so will probably be told to sod off but I would vote for Keir Starmer - an effective communicator and details man. And Ian Murray for deputy, the only Scottish Labour MP in Parliament.

Etinox · 13/01/2020 15:20

Resigned over women’s rights and won’t rejoin, although Im represented by my union. Keir did some very impressive pro women work when’s DPP. My only concern is that if he becomes leader now, the Tory media have a loooong time to discredit him. I like all the women for Deputy.

TheQueef · 13/01/2020 15:23

Starmer for me.
Nandy for dep.

Bloomburger · 13/01/2020 15:26

V v sad that it will probably be another middle class white man from the same be small patch of north London is going to be labour leader again. No wonder they are having trouble appealing to the working class northern voter.

AlunWynsKnee · 13/01/2020 15:27

derxa understanding who Conservatives might vote for is v useful I think.

TheOrangeFox · 13/01/2020 15:28

Keir Starmer and Jess Phillips in the final two. Keir Starmer to win.

Jess is great but she says what she thinks with no filter. Great for some but not others. She's more divisive than Keir.

As much as I'd like a woman, I'd love Starmer more.

HollowTalk · 13/01/2020 15:28

Lifelong Labour voter here but really didn't like Corbyn's policies and would hate to see Rebecca Long Bailey take over. I think Labour wouldn't stand a chance for another 20 years.
