.....we’re all agreed that we need to be pragmatic, cynical and hard headed in the choice of the next leader and deputy, yes?

So, who? Who has a chance of getting us into power in the foreseeable future? Starmer and Philips?

I think Rosina Allin-Khan is fantastic.A proper rising star. And an amazing CV. But once again, not enough experience this time round.

Feel free to ignore as I'm a Tory.

How much importance are you placing on the new leader to win an election? I voted for the Tories in spite of, not because of Boris as leader.

What I'm saying is that I vote for the Tories for their policies. Are you happy with Corbyn's policies or would you expect the new leader to put forward new policies you think are more likely to appeal to floating voters?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/01/2020 19:08

Starmer, definitely.

Not decided yet about deputy

Lailaha · 13/01/2020 19:10

Starmer might appeal to some Red Tories, but there's long memories in the white, working class former industrial towns like Rochdale. He's a Guardian reader's choice, not a Mirror reader's.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/01/2020 19:17

Lailaha you seem to have missed that hundreds of thousands of these mainly white working class former industrial areas in the north have just voted for Boris Johnson to be PM - probably our most elitist PM for sometime

And that their political views are not that left wing .....

BestIsWest · 13/01/2020 19:21

I will likely vote for Phillips though I won’t mind if Starmer wins. I’m looking at who’s backing who and being guided in part by that.

I really don’t want RLB to win.

Deputy Murray or Rayner.

Lailaha · 13/01/2020 19:22

Enthusiasm - you seem to have missed that it's not about elitism, but rather, about his legacy (or perceived legacy) as DPP.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 13/01/2020 19:27

Murray for deputy for me. I'd like someone who actually understands Scottish politics and can bring some ideas to the table about how to win back some seats in Scotland. Worth a read of the interview he did in the Scotsman at the weekend if you don't know much about him.

Undecided on Leader just yet, probably KS or JP, though no one is really hitting the mark for me and KS's launch video left me cold. I'd have quite liked YC to stand, even though I didn't vote for her previously. I liked what she had to say in a recent interview.

RuffleCrow · 13/01/2020 19:31

Laialha that makes no sense if you're talking about the same communities that recently voted in Boris' Tories! None of them are likely to read the Mirror so northern memories can't be that long Hmm

Zampa · 13/01/2020 19:34

Lisa Nandy door stepped us on behalf of our local candidate. She was very impressive and I will be probably be voting for her.

DH used to work with Long-Bailey at two different law firms. Says she wasn't very impressive.

Mysterian · 13/01/2020 19:35

I'm voting Starmer. Nandy seems ok.

SummerPavillion · 13/01/2020 19:37

I desperately want a woman leader, but will go for Starmer now. And Rosena Allin-Khan for deputy.

I don't think we'll win the next election, too much damage to repair by then, but maybe the one after if we get back on track. So the next leader may well not be the one who becomes PM.

Agree there's no electoral risk having another white middle class southener - that's who the voters vote for! Tragic though that is.

SummerPavillion · 13/01/2020 19:39

I mean tragic as in not diverse/representative enough. Some of my best friends are white middle class southeners (also me)

Violetparis · 13/01/2020 19:48

Keir Starmer for me, really like Lisa Nandy too and hope she gets one of the shadow cabinet roles. Not keen on Jess Phillips.

Angela Rayner for deputy at the moment, though interested to hear what the others have to say as don't know much about some of them.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 13/01/2020 19:50

Starmer for me, he is my local MP and I’ve always been impressed with him. Undecided on deputy.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 13/01/2020 19:56

Don’t forget that (unless I’ve missed something) it’s alternative vote, so there’s no pressure on you to vote for Starmer to keep out Long Bailey or vice versa - if you think Nandy or whoever would be the best leader then you can put her first and your safe “stop X at all cost” candidate in second place. (I’m sure most people on this thread know that but a couple of posters seemed to be talking about “vote Y to stop X” tactics)

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/01/2020 20:30

Lailaha why would that be an issue

Corbynism rejected, left wing politics rejected, no issue for many voting for someone who has had the most privileged as he promised to deliver Brexit. Jess Philips (maybe she is the mirrors choice) wants to possibly work toward rejoining the EU that’s not going to win voters back

People will vote for someone they feel is competent and will get on with the job regardless of the mirror not backing them or what class they are from

TeamLannister · 13/01/2020 20:30

Please God not Jess Phillips, she's an irritating arrogant idiot. Not impressed by Lisa Nandy either. I quite like Rebecca Long-Bailey but I don't think she's strong enough to threaten the Tories. I'd be happy with Keir Starmer or Emily Thornberry.

TeamLannister · 13/01/2020 20:31

If Jess Phillips wins I'm resigning.

ButterflyRuns · 13/01/2020 20:32

I'll be voting for Lisa Nandy as leader (Starmer would be my 2nd choice if she doesn't make it) and Angela Rayner as deputy leader.

ButterflyRuns · 13/01/2020 20:34

That said, I definitely DON'T want Phillips as leader. She's utterly useless

RiveterRosie · 13/01/2020 20:35

Rebecca Long-Bailey with Richard Burgon as deputy. I don't want a leader and deputy who are going to march the Labour Party back to Blairism.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/01/2020 20:38

I don’t think Jess Phillips shall win she would have been better off running for deputy

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/01/2020 20:41

Well the Labour Party were far more successful under Blairism than Corbynism

Hmm
lljkk · 13/01/2020 20:49

"the Labour Party were far more successful under Blairism "

It's true. The party can choose between Puritanism or changing the world for better. I don't think you get to have both.
