Hi all. Would like to make a day trip in London in spring with family. Trains expensive. Some one suggested driving to tube station and parking then get a day tube ticket. Can anyone please recommend one with good safe parking and no congestion charge. Along time ago I went witht a friend to wembley and we parked at ruislip. I am coming from Midlands area. Wld like to do central London ie. Buckingham palace and Trafalgar square etc. Thanks. Tube map confusing me.

I have used Watford and Finchley all the options and cockfosters for access to central London.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2020 13:37

I've often wondered if you're allowed to do this by parking at Brent Cross shopping centre - ie park at the shopping centre and tube into London, or if they have some sort of system to stop people doing this?

As this might be a solution to the OP and anyone else coming from the north?

If you book in advance, Megabus fares can be cheap (Bham-Lon £3pp each way) and Victoria bus station is v central. They also do a v good and cheap London city tour.

Belledan1 · 12/01/2020 13:55

Thank you these are great ideas. Watford be a gd option. I looked a mega bus it is cheap but hassle get in to city as about 30 miles away and parking but it is so cheap so naybe worth it. Thanks for tip re tour bus.

Brent Cross shopping centre isn't in walking distance from the tube station

And no guarantee you will find a parking space in the various Finchley and Cockfosters stations as they are usually full. Too many commuters doing the same thing.

Belledan1 · 12/01/2020 17:15

Thanks for tip. Planning to go easter week hoping parking bit less busy. Will try and prebook parking if go from watford.

There are two adjacent car parks at Arnos Grove (Piccadilly line) so usually lots of spaces and the parking charge is £6 for the day (pay on exit). It’s about a 25 min ride to the centre from there - get off at Covent Garden or Piccadilly Circus for Trafalgar sq.

Belledan1 · 13/01/2020 06:38

Ohh Thank you will look in to this.

We use Cockfosters.

Theworldisfullofgs · 13/01/2020 07:22

What about park on my drive? You can pay to use someone's driveway.

Emma9876 · 13/01/2020 07:30

We always park at stanmore, lots of parking at a weekend, it gets busy if there are any games on at Wembley as it's on the northan line. And I'm sure last time we went it was only £1.50 parking all day!

ArchMemory · 13/01/2020 07:32

I thought this was going to be a thread about favourite tube station architecture. I was going to nominate Westminster Grin

closetotheaction · 13/01/2020 07:56

Was also coming on hoping for a discussion about our favourite Tube stations.

Mine's Canary Wharf.

Grumbley · 13/01/2020 08:02

Lmao me too @ArchMemory.

nakedavengeragain · 13/01/2020 08:06

Me too Grumbley et al!

I was hoping for empassioned debates over cut and cover v dig, tunnel length and platform complexity.

Mines Bank. After 15 years of using it daily I still can't work it out. I particularly love the fact Monument pretends to be Bank it's that good!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 13/01/2020 08:09

Oh yes to Bank.

And Westminster.

WelcomeToCranford · 13/01/2020 08:09

I second Stanmore but get there early. Or drive down on a Friday and make a weekend of it.

Magissa · 13/01/2020 08:13

West Ruislip (end of Central line) has decent parking.
What about driving to Westfield London (massive shopping centre) and parking up for the day. I think it's £10 a day. There are two stations right there. Shepherds Bush (Central Line) or Wood Lane (Circle or Hammersmith and City).

Caspianberg · 13/01/2020 08:17

Second parking at a westfield shopping centre. They are both fairly central, one east and one west london. And tube from there will then be cheaper as both zones 1/2, rather than 4/5/6.

uk.westfield.com/london/centre-info/getting-here

You can see here, Its only £8.50 weekdays, and £9.50 weekends to park for up to 24hrs.

LiveatCityHall · 13/01/2020 08:18

We drive to perivale (central line) It's just off the a40 which might be easy for you if you're coming down from Birmingham as the m40 merges into the a40 so is a decent route. No congestion charge and some parking at the back of the station.

DreamingofSunshine · 13/01/2020 08:33

Stanmore is on the jubilee, not Northern line.

Harrow on the hill has a multistorey car park near the entrance and there's two shopping centre car parks within a five minute walk.

Belledan1 · 13/01/2020 17:41

Thanks everyone

TheFaerieQueene · 13/01/2020 17:43

I was going to suggest Westfield too.
