Hi all. Would like to make a day trip in London in spring with family. Trains expensive. Some one suggested driving to tube station and parking then get a day tube ticket. Can anyone please recommend one with good safe parking and no congestion charge. Along time ago I went witht a friend to wembley and we parked at ruislip. I am coming from Midlands area. Wld like to do central London ie. Buckingham palace and Trafalgar square etc. Thanks. Tube map confusing me.

Brent Cross shopping centre isn't in walking distance from the tube station

Yes it is! It's about a 15 min walk.

Just asked my son in law. He and his mates drive from Nottingham for major sporting events. He parks at Stanmore. Says he's always found a space, no more than 10 mins fromm the station BUT that is on a weekend

(Probably about 20) Years ago I parked for free on a side street near to Brent Cross tube. Not sure what it’s like now. I now live in North Kent, to park at my local station is £5 for the day and then it’s about £20 for a day return and I think my son 10 is £1.

If it’s a weekday, Stanmore station car park gets full very early, around 8am

We have parked at Stanmore before and got the Jubilee line - big car park adjacent to station.

Well I’m going to throw Blackfriars in as my favourite tube station - it’s architecture makes me happy after its refit, I find it easy to get around and love getting off over the Thames.

As for parking, we use Stanmore for what you have described. Always parking at the weekends and cheap.

What day are you coming? You can park for free in many areas from 12.30 on a Saturday. Free on Sunday. I can PM you my area in C London.

Absolutely travel early and park at Shepherd’s Bush Westfield, the parking is lovely, cheap and you’re only 10 mins from central London. You just need to avoid the A40 at rush hour, we generally leave the midlands at 5.30am and go for breakfast in central London by 8.30am.

But also in the spirit of the other meaning of the thread, I think Charing Cross is my favourite tube station, purely for sentimental reasons from when I had to use it day in day out for commuting.

My mil always used to drive to Cockfosters or Arnos Grove.

My favourite Tube is tricky. I like Baker Street as it has keen family memories- I am partial to the entire bakerloo line and I like the deep ones.

But I once stood in the platform at Victoria tube (northbound Victoria line) and snogged a lovely lovely boy for 30 minutes until one of the station staff came and told us we were going to miss the last train so I am choosing that one.

Angel station for me. Childhood memories of how bloody long the escalators were and now my DC have the same experience (we go via Angel quite often)

Sorry, no help with the parking Blush

Thanks for all the tips

I often drive to stanmore which is on the end of the jubilee line which is a fast line. It is just off the m1 so easy to get to. There are lots of people selling parking on their drive if the station car park is full

GlamGiraffe · 18/01/2020 13:03

Places like finchley and the residential streets around brent cross station (not the shopping centre car park) all seem to have controlled parking hours I.e. you cannot park from 11am until 1pm or similar, to prevent all day commuter parking. If you leave your car during that time you will almost certainly get a ticket. The same us true for places like golders green, hampstead, west hampstead, Belsize park etc. The more distant places suggested ate more suitable.brent cross shopping centre might work and if you're tired and want to ride the little bus back from the station to the car park it's easy, many people seem to do that.

Someone wrote a song about Angel tube station back in the 90s I think. I like Russell Square with its mix of retro and lifts. Agree about Bank. Am I in Bank or am I in Monument? They should have a border control. Arnos Grove looks like a spaceship from the outside but is a boring area. We used to call it Arnos Grave in its shabby days and even post gentrification it is still dull.

It could be that the cheaper train tickets are not on sale yet for Easter. Depending on where in the midlands you are, you could get two family singles (£30 each way) - up to two adults and up to four children can travel, but you do have to book on to specific trains. Virgin used to do them and I'm oretty sure whoever took over from virgin now do them too.
