When we were skint and were eating out of the fridge and cupboards DH ‘invented his favourite sandwich....

Hummus and raisins, he now eats it everyday even though we have enough food in the house to have normal sandwiches.

When I was little and we were poor, my Mum used to give me a bowl of dried milk as my supper. I thought that it was the best snack ever.

I had an uncle who would use cup a soups as flavouring for plain crisps. We still do this and bloody love it.

I enjoy bread soaked with chip shop vinegar (non-brewed condiment) and covered in salt and pepper....

iklboo · 11/01/2020 12:48

Sardine & tomato sandwich paste and sliced pickled onion sandwiches.

StopMegxit · 11/01/2020 12:50

When I was a student I loved crisp sandwiches. Then I discovered those crispy fried onions you can buy readymade (Asian shops often sell big bags of it cheaply!). Slap a handful of that stuff between two slices of buttered plastic white bread. Heavenly.

Koka chicken flavour noodles cooked then put on top of toasted white sliced bread with plastic sliced cheese on top. Finished off under a grill to brown the cheese.

Teaspoon of crunchy peanut butter dipped in Cadbury’s drinking chocolate power.

geordiejock · 11/01/2020 13:00

I know I invented this, on night shift about 4am starving, went in the kitchen and made a flat bread then basically all the stuff you normally get on a donner kebab like salad and raw onion but with a tin of haggis instead of donner meat.

I call it kebaggis. We have it about once a month as a treat.

Stripey popcorn (ie a layer of salt and then a later of sweet over and over again). All those popcorn firms selling bags of it in supermarkets nowadays? Totally down to me and my vociferous evangelism at the local Odeon aged 14.

ShivD · 11/01/2020 13:06

You know you can buy those pieces of cheese rolled in slices of chorizo in the supermarkets (think Sainsbury’s call them rollitos or something. I (along with some mates) invented those but called them cheese bombs and used various deli sliced meat for them.

My mother in law invented sausages fried and then mixed up with warm tinned tomatoes. This was served when they were short of money. My OH still makes it they call it dogs dinner!

one day had some salmon fillets in the fridge so raided the cupboard to put some flavour in, I had fresh ginger, soy sauce and honey in the cupboard so my salmon recipe is grate the ginger over the fillets, pour honey on and then soy sauce in the oven twenty minutes to bake heaven hot or cold

ginandgingers92 · 11/01/2020 15:13

Ham and peanut butter sandwiches 🤤🤤

managedmis · 11/01/2020 15:16

Hot duck fat. Just that.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 11/01/2020 15:18

My Nutella, brioche and custard pudding

Can’t tell you more than that apart from everyone thinks it’s absolutely delicious 😋

Charlottejbt · 11/01/2020 15:22

This sort of thing is why the French judge us. :)

Mine was "invented" by a friend I had when I was about 20. It's a drink made with a spoonful of Marmite diluted in a teacup of hot water. I know people do this with Bovril but not Marmite for some reason. The friend in question had a very restricted diet of mostly white and high carb/fat food and only lived to be 45, so the Marmite was probably the only healthy savoury thing he consumed. Probably too salty though.

Namethecat · 11/01/2020 15:27

When I was a child and times were hard . A beef burger in the middle of the plate, baked beans ( spoonful of curry powder) place around burger. Then rice around that .
Very filling !

Sammi38 · 11/01/2020 15:48

Pate and strawberry jam sandwiches.

Chicken roll and mint sauce sandwiches.

I am partial to a good sandwich!

Sammi38 · 11/01/2020 15:49

Oh, and aunt bessies Yorkshire puddings filled with cranberry jelly as a little afternoon snack.

MonopolyDog · 11/01/2020 15:50

@ginandgingers92 you invented it and you can keep it all to yourself as well WinkGrin

Gribbie · 11/01/2020 15:54

Nutella and jam sandwiches- invented by my indecisive child. Very nice.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 11/01/2020 15:57

Cup of bisto, lots of black pepper, buttered plastic white bread dipped in.

Fishcake nachos- cheapo fishcakes, grated cheese over the top, ketchup and mayo. Eaten with fingers.
Both invented during times of student poverty. Both delicious.

MooMummy12 · 11/01/2020 16:01

Not something I thought I invented but a family member used to make us vimto milkshake as kids.

Still love them to this day :) .... small amount of vimto cordial and top the glass up with milk! 😋

mommymooo · 11/01/2020 16:32

Banana and marmite sandwich must be with proper butter and soft bread gorgeous.

Streaky smokey bacon and pickled red cabbage on a crusty cob lots of proper butter yummy

ginandgingers92 · 11/01/2020 17:21

@MonopolyDog - don't knock it until you've tried it! 😂 also good with a bit of cheese too 👌🏼👌🏼

Miggymoggymugwumps · 11/01/2020 17:31

Mum used to make 'leather pie' for a cheap and cheerful dessert. It was literally Yorkshire pudding batter with sultanas chucked in & finished with a light dusting of caster sugar...takes me back to my childhood!

HerRoyalFattyness · 11/01/2020 17:39

My granny used to serve us homemade skinny chips with oxtail soup and a slice of white buttered bread.
Heaven.
