Doing a drinks party next week. I can only think of the following

Quails eggs and celery salt
smoked salmon and blinis

I could be looking up ideas online (and I am) but I like chatting on MN, so ideas gratefully received!

Chilli prawn with a honeyed chorizo?
Sundried tomato with mozzarella and basil leaf

squee123 · 11/01/2020 08:51

I always find that hot cocktail sausages with a honey and wholegrain mustard glaze gwt hoovered up. Also hallumi with chilli jam. BBC Good Food has recipes for both IIRC

caranx · 11/01/2020 08:52

Lot of ones I love already on here.

I will add cubed pork belly marinated in hoisin sauce, cooked in oven 20-ish minutes. Serve with cocktail sticks. Super yum. You can fancy up with cucumber if you like.

Elindab · 11/01/2020 08:56

Yummmm

Sorry, I've only got fairy bread, sausage rolls, fruit kebabs. I only cater for the young.

misspiggy19 · 11/01/2020 09:08

Proper, homemade sausages rolls
Spring rolls

2MapleMuffins · 11/01/2020 09:10

OMG fairy bread??!! Are you from Oz or NZ? My SIL is from Oz and she has been trying for years to persuade us that fairy bread is where it is at.

I like it (has to be softest white bread though) but she can't convince anyone else!!!

On the soft bread front... asapargus rolls might go on the list. :)

Fairy bread? Fairy bread? I need a recipe please!!!

2MapleMuffins · 11/01/2020 09:14

It is white bread spread thinly with butter and topped with sprinkles. :)

I have never seen it heart shaped! Just cut into triangles.

I love it. I eat it and Dniece and my DCs look like this Hmm

Yes, fairy bread is the best! It always gets eaten first by kids and it's so easy to make. Adults will also eat it if hungry. You're right, it has to be soft white bread. Also proper butter, imo but there are different schools of thought on that.

Oblomov20 · 11/01/2020 09:22

Blimey I'm in a new world of canapés with you lot! Clearly professionals!

Elindab · 11/01/2020 09:24

I did try fancy shapes with the fairy bread once, when I was young and keen. Then, triangles with crusts off. Nowadays, I just leave the crusts on. It makes no difference really, I think.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 11/01/2020 09:25

One of my dcs 17 would love that fairy bread. Thank you

bsc · 11/01/2020 10:57

@Oblomov20 I was about to comment that this is a whole new world!
When do you actually eat these canapes?
(By which I mean what sort of event are you having?) I would associate this type of thing with a book launch or a 50th wedding anniversary.

Mini vegetable tacos - use a circle cutter then brush with oil and fold into crescent shape by inverting a muffin tin and putting between the muffin shapers. Fill with finely chopped fajita vegetables and a little cheese.

Blue cheese and walnut puffs. Basically Stilton cheese straw pastry cut into circles, glazed and a little St Augur cheese and walnut on top.

Macaroni cheese bites. Make macaroni cheese. Line mini muffin tin with pancetta. Stir egg into cooled macaroni cheese, fill mini muffin tins. Top with breadcrumbs mixed with Parmesan. Fold Pancetta around. Bake until pancetta is crisp. Leave out pancetta for vegetarian option, obviously. Can be frozen and reheated.

Lots of cocktail sausages in sticky glaze.

Arancini - risotto fairly dry rolled around a mozzarella Pearl. Dipped in breadcrumbs and air fried. Cook ahead and reheat. Tomato risotto works well.

Bruschetta with traditional tomato or with homemade guacamole topped with chilli prawn.

Tiny homemade samosa - freeze and reheat.

Baby new potatoes roasted then opened and topped with sour cream and chives.

Deconstructed scotch egg. Brioche circles toasted or fried. Sausage meat rolled into cylinder and coated with breadcrumbs before cooking. Thinly slice and put on brioche. Finely chopped piccalilli then a slice of quail egg.

Nigella has brilliant recipes for crab cakes, pork noodle balls and sesame / honey / soy cocktail sausages which are all absolutely glorious. She also refers to canapés as “Unhappy Hour” for the cook. Lots of effort to produce loveliness that people barely notice. I have to concur.

Oblomov20 · 11/01/2020 12:05

Some of these sound very messy. More suitable maybe for a buffet? Rather than a clean canapé?

You aren't supposed to be: covered in cream and chives from the new potatoes and constantly licking your fingers every canapé you're offered?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 11/01/2020 12:05

My DD and her BFF from OZ spent their entire childhood scarfing fairy bread. Such lovely memories!!

2MapleMuffins · 11/01/2020 12:13

bsc it is a 'drinks party' by which I mean turn up about 5 pm, stand around and drink and eat little bits.

I have had major depression for about 9 years and am coming out of it. DH pointed out to me that we have become very isolated and anti social and have lost touch with our friends. So it is a way to get alot of people together without having the stress of an actual dinner party type thing. :)

I love cooking also, so fiddling about with fiddly bits of edibles is right up my alley. :)

(I am thinking we might try and have a bbq in the summer. 2 events a year is all i can handle).

loving the idea of deconstructed scotch eggs.
