Hairdryer/straighteners: hangs on the bathroom door, that’s where I use it.

Hoover: bottom of a big cupboard. It’s a pull along rather than upright, bought so that it would fit in this space.

Christmas decs: big IKEA plastic box in the loft (small apartment but comes with a loft and a cellar).
Spare towels/bedding: we only keep two sets per bed. They take up 1.5 drawers in our boys room.

Coats, handbags, shoes: coats in the hall - max 2 each. Handbags - I only have 1 plus a cloth carrier, so they hang with the coats. Shoes: I only have 1 pair boots, 1 pair slip ons and 1 pair of trainers. Children have only 1 pair of trainers each! So they fit in a rack under the coat stand. Any others go in the bottom of my wardrobe.

BuddhaAtSea · 10/01/2020 06:40

Hairdryer/straighteners In the bottom drawer of my bedside cabinet, next to a full length mirror that’s behind the door

Hoover I have a wall mounted Dyson, lives in the hallway cupboard

Christmas decs in a plastic box in the wardrobe. We have real trees due to lack of storage.

Spare towels/bedding. Airing cupboard in the hallway. I managed to fit a kallax on the side of the boiler.

Coats on a hook in the hallway, handbags, shoes in a kallax by the front door.

HTH.

CrowleysBentley · 10/01/2020 06:55

We live in a stupidly tiny flat. Me and 2 young adult DC. I have regular clear outs to the charity shop, there's just no room for too much stuff.

Hairdryer, I have 4 shelves on the wall above my dressing table that have things like that, products, straighteners, rollers etc, plus knitting, crochet and cross stitch stuff in storage boxes.

Hoover, I have a shark and it lives in my bedroom, tucked behind the curtain in the corner so it's not visible.

Christmas decorations go in storage boxes, some in the airing cupboard, some on top of my wardrobe.

Spare towels on wall shelf/rack thing in the bathroom. Bed linen for all of us in a drawer in my divan bed. Summer/winter duvets vac packed in the other drawer.

Coats, we have a coat rack on the wall by the front door. Summer coats gets vacuum packed and put in the airing cupboard in the winter and vice versa. Same with clothes but those go on top of the wardrobe.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 10/01/2020 07:06

Hairdryer and straighteners - in the desk drawer in our bedroom so it's next to the mirror where I get ready.
Hoover - big one lives in the airing cupboard upstairs, little one in the kallax in the living room.
Christmas decs - box in the loft
Spare towels and bedding - under the bed (we have a big ottoman bed so a lot of things get stored under there)
Coats, handbags, shoes - in our tiny porch. We only keep what we actually need or wear so we don't have loads of spare coats or shoes sitting about.

Our house is a dinky 2up 2 down and there are four of us here so we've become really good at downsizing and storing things!

Thefaceofboe · 10/01/2020 07:22

Omg this is the perfect thread for me! Luckily we have a loft for decorations and Christmas tree but storing the hoover and ironing board etc is a nightmare. You can only fit so much in our downstairs loo....!

Thefaceofboe · 10/01/2020 07:23

For towers, I have a lovely wicker basket that I roll towels up in. I leave it on my landing (which is tiny) outside the bathroom door but actually looks really nice

SushiGo · 10/01/2020 07:31

Hairdryer/straighteners - bedside table
Hoover - cupboard under stairs
Christmas decs - loft could go under stairs now it's been decluttered though
Spare towels - cupboard in bathroom
Sheets - on shelves in relevant wardrobe
Coats - hooks by door
handbags - backs of bedroom doors
shoes - narrow shelves by front door plus under beds for not in season. Wellies in a box in the car boot.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 10/01/2020 07:31

I’m sure you can buy an over door ironing board hanger.

I’m now heading over to Pinterest to look for creative hoover storage!

SushiGo · 10/01/2020 07:33

Our ironing board is slid into the gap between the fridge and wall!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 10/01/2020 07:49

We had an overdoor ironing board holder! 'Twas great. Makes the door heavy though (obvs).

Hairdryer - on a hook attached to the bookshelf that puts it "over" the dressing table.

Hoover - in the tall kitchen cupboard with the bin it it, sacrificing shelves and other storage to do so. There's no understairs cupboard here and I got sick of falling over it.

Christmas decorations - loft. Sorry.

Spare bedding and towels - underbed drawers for every bed. Two or three sets of bedding per child. Mopping up / hair dye towels in an eaves cupboard at the end of the bath. Swimming/ beach towels etc under our ottoman bed with out of season clothes / other half of duvet / clothes waiting for younger DC to grow into them.

Coats - on hangers on sideways coat rail mounted by the back door. Shoes below on a repuposed bookshelf. Walking boots above on "hat rack" on hanging rail and shelf at picture rail height above that. All DC also have a coat rack in their bedroom and hooks on their doors.

Bags - on door hooks. Not all mine, I have two (1 large, one small) on a hook in the study. Other hooks are taken up with music bags, laptop bags, school bags etc.

myidentitymycrisis · 10/01/2020 08:16

Hairdryer/straighteners: airing cupboard on landing- never used
Hoover: doesn’t fit anywhere, so moves around the house looking ugly
Christmas decs: box in the loft
Spare towels/bedding: airing cupboard
Coats, handbags, shoes: I’ve built cupboards into the chimney recesses in my bedroom, shoes in there, dotted around on the floor all around the house, several pairs in the tiny hallway by front door. DP shoes are on the floor in bedroom and in a large under bed storage box.
Coats hang in tiny hallway, in the bedroom cupboards, and hang over backs of chairs in the kitchen and living room. I put the less used ones upstairs but it’s still not enough

solittletime · 10/01/2020 10:47

When we were renting it was a nightmare. Now that we have bought I spent months thinking about every nook and cranny and planning purpose made storage areas. Then found an amazing carpenter that made custom made under stairs cupboard to my specifications and visited slightly too many kitchen shops until I found a very experienced kitchen person who designed a really well thought out space.
It was a big outlay financially but so worth it. We still have clutter but I actually though about Hoover, shoes, coats etc during the process. Annoyingly I ignored recycling bins space and it drives me nutty .
I can’t recommend it enough if it’s a possibility for anyone

BearSoFair · 10/01/2020 10:53

Hairdryer - in it's box, behind the bed
Hoover - Under the stairs
Xmas decorations - Under the stairs
Towels and bedding - Drawers under our bed
Coats - Hooks by the door
Bags - Usually dumped on the spare chair in the kitchen Blush But should be hanging with the coats or stored in the wardrobe
Shoes - Shoe rack underneath the coat hooks

hartof · 10/01/2020 10:59

Hair stuff - Our bed is half ottoman and the top half has a small drawer on each side. Mine has my straighteners, dryer and curling wand in. The other has a spare set of bedding.

Hoover - Spare room

Xmas Decs - Spare room at the moment but I'm going to clear the ottoman part of the bed and put them there.

Towels go in the cupboard at the top of the stairs (the only storage space the house had apart from the loft!) Bedding is under our bed.

Coats - Hooks by the door.

Bags - Handbags not in use in my wardrobe. My handbag and DH's laptop bag on respective sides of the sofa. DD's school bag usually stays under the kitchen table at night.

Shoes - either in wardrobe or under coat hooks.

We live in a new build and there's not much storage so we're having to get inventive. Our downstairs loo is really long so one end has a dryer in it with my reusable shopping bags at the side and it does have some clutter on top which I need to sort. We also have a slim shed to put some things in.

DreamingofSunshine · 10/01/2020 11:17

We live in a basement flat so no loft/cellar although there's a 1m height coal shed type cupboard off DS' room where the Christmas decorations live in a big plastic box.

All doors have hooks on the back which helps, so DS' swimming kit lives on the back of his door.

We did a huge clear out do we don't have lots to store, but have beds with storage or filled with under bed storage boxes.

Toys in a kallax, if they don't fit then it's time to sell/donate some.

Yoghurty · 10/01/2020 11:35

Hairdryer/straighteners- plastic storage box under the bed
Hoover- in the one small cupboard we have in the hallway
Christmas decs- in storage trunk in the garden
Spare towels/bedding- in under bed storage
Coats, handbags, shoes- coat rack behind hallway door, hanging shoe rack attached to hallway door

Lots of decluttering every few months helps with minimal storage!

Danni91 · 10/01/2020 11:44

Tiny tiny house here, not even one cupboard for storage!

Hairdryer/straighteners - Living room sideboard kept in box.

Hoover - We bought the thinnest cordless one we could find and it hides under the coats badly

Christmas decs - We can't enter the loft because it's unsafe so we just rent a garage now. It's £40 a month and not even local so xmas decs go there.

Spare towels/bedding - honestly we don't really have spare towels, the same 6 are on rotation constantly, 3 used daily 3 are washed and dried whilst the other 3 are ready for use. Bedding we have 3 sets each and they go in the bottom of the wardrobe.

Coats, handbags, shoes - wardrobe & chest of drawers- we have a 1M by 1.5M square for a hallway so everything's either hidden or out!

We don't keep clutter, the odd vase & photo frame is all. Kids toys in a kallax. Daily coats live behind front door.

What bugs me the most is the fucking sweeping brush & mop. There's just no where for them to live they move room to room constantly and occasionally hide upstairs if anyone important is due round!

LittleLongDog · 10/01/2020 11:59

Hairdryer and straighteners: I built a small floating draw under a mirror and keep them there.

Hoover: cordless dyson up on a wall hook charging thing (that it came with) behind the kitchen door.

Christmas decs: in a storage box in the under stair cupboard. Get a real tree every year as there’s no room to store an artificial one.

Spare towels/bedding: in the bed (it’s a divan with built in drawers). Spare duvet and pillows are vacuum packed.

Coats, handbags, shoes: some in the understair cupboard but also have a slimline shoe storage unit by the front door.

LittleLongDog · 10/01/2020 12:03

@Danni91 would something like these wall mounted clips help? I have similar for the mop and broom and it’s good to be able to clip your broom away flat against the wall out of the way somewhere (behind a door? In a cupboard?)

I sometimes have trouble with the laundry hamper that seems to be constantly floating about.

TheNoodlesIncident · 10/01/2020 13:13

Oh my
Hairdryer and straighteners: on and by chest of drawers in bedroom
Hoover: SharkyMcSharkface is No Fixed Abode, currently sitting on the landing
Christmas decs: In the loft. Amazed at posters having only one box Shock I think we have around twelve plus a few trees Blush
Spare towels/bedding: built in wardrobe with sliding door
Coats: Rack of hooks in the hall. Wardrobe in the dining room. Single cupboard in the boxroom. Too many coats (and they're mostly mine too, the shame)
Shoes: In built in wardrobe. And on rack in the hall. And aforementioned boxroom cupboard. And in drawer in bedframe.
Handbags: Either hanging from rack in hall or in drawer in bedframe.

Think a clearout is overdue... plus building a cupboard for the vacuum and its colleagues to live in.

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/01/2020 13:56

Ooh thanks for all the replies! I'm having a read through now.

My plan is to start decluttering the house. There is far too much stuff. Equally, there's not much storage space. It's not actually that small a house, but it is a 2 bed, so no spare rooms.

I'm getting ideas of where things will go, once I've done the declutter. I do have under stairs cupboard and airing cupboard so that helps.

Off to read back.

There's two of us in a Victorian cottage with 2 bedrooms; stairway from the second bedroom leads up to a loft room.

Hairdryer - on top of box in bedroom in front of chest of drawers which houses my hair stuff. Straighteners in bottom drawer of bedside cabinet.

Hoover : in cupboard under the stairs

Xmas decs : up in the loft room, along with a raft of other stuff (must get around to sorting it out)

Spare towels and bedding - in a fold up ottoman in spare bedroom - spare bedroom also used as dressing room, place to put airers up etc. We have a blow up bed for when we have guests which is stored in the loft room.

We have no hallway as the front door leads directly into the living room, but we have a wall mounted coathook at the bottom of the stairs. The hooks fold in when it's empty so that stays flat.

Handbags : ah, well, yes - fold up ottoman in our bedroom, two Ikea underbed boxes, some evening bags (the jewelled type) in top drawer of bedside cabinet and then overflow hanging on shoe rack and on top of wardrobes in spare bedroom. I may have something of a handbag habit.

Alpacathebag · 10/01/2020 16:36

We’ve specifically bought furniture that has storage incorporated Or can have storage added. Under our bed we have storage boxes that have Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, shoes and the suitcases are under there too. In the spare room we have an ikea day bed that has three very deep drawers under it that have towels, bedding and a selection of board games in them.

There’s a cupboard over the stairs bulkhead in that room too so we put shelves in there and store lots of spare house hold bits like the tool box, spare duvets and pillows. We also have squeezed in bookshelves and ikea Kallax units everywhere we can, and have chosen the accessories to go with them that include drawers or shelf splitters.

My hair and make up stuff is all kept in the same part of my wardrobe as my underwear.

Alpacathebag · 10/01/2020 16:38

Forgot, I downsized my hoover from a Henry to a days on cordless that can be squeezed in a small gap between the wall and a bookcase. And we have ottoman footstools in the lounge too for all the crap that somehow migrated there.

woodhill · 10/01/2020 16:45

I have reasonable storage space in my house

Hair tools in dressing table drawer

Bags in basket in wardrobe

Hoover in understairs cupboard

Towels in built in airing cupboard

Coats in a cupboard which was our old pantry

Storage beds are your friend with drawers
